It seems to me that the temple is shorter in distance from the drop ship here than in those shots in the trailers. Then again this may be a photoshopped image for marketing. But I love the tone of the shot. Two crews are seen with duffle bags so this probably takes place after they steal the "fire of Gods."

hmm nice little image there, quite avatar in a way, possibly from the beginning of the film

Wasn't Avatar on a jungle world?

Can't be from Avatar, it all rocks, no jungle, Pandora is jungle planet, plains it has, but no desert.

I also appreciate the fact that the planet looks real, not a CGI fest like AVATAR

Is the planet LV-426? I know everyone assumes it is, but where are the bone-like rocks and steam vents? And how come the crew of the Prometheus can breathe in the temple?

I don't see how it could be LV-426 unless there is some catastrophic event that makes it even more uninhabitable? It looks far too different from the world portrayed in Alien and Aliens. Perhaps the Jockeys activate something that messes with the environment.

looking at the full size picture there even appears to be snow on the mountain behind the temple, very nice

No, the planet is not the same one as Alien. This has been done to death and settled by deductive reasoning as well as the write flat out telling us.

Vickers looks like she's waiting to check out what they found.
I may work for the company, but im really an OK guy.

Did they officially say the planet was different? Good, that makes me happy.

takka takka - it may well have been 'done to death', but I didn't know this, hence my question. The resigned tone of the post would suggest you think I'm stupid for asking!

But if this isn't LV-426, does this mean two ships crash on different planets? Is the crashing ship in Prometheus not the same as the derelict in Alien?

mmmm im not sure if its LV426 or not ..to me its ...but can go both ways ....

Let's not forget about that sandstorm in trailers. Maybe the planet just goes to hell and dies. Honestly the planet in the film looks like earth to me atmosphereically.

That is one gorgeously realistic and beautifully plausible landscape. Thanks for that image, EGR101.

I don't think it could be LV-426 because if unless in the thirty or so years between prometheus and Alien the atmosphere is totally ripped out of it like a Supernova or super nuclear weapon etc. Then it is just not enough time to go from an Earth like planet to basically the moon.

ZetaReticuli

And it simply looks TOO big, this planet. Wasn't LV426 a 'planetoid'? Again, people are clinging too much to Alien.

Dropyourlinen

MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 5:08 PM
Well, Zeta Reticuli, answer the question then - do two Space Jockey ships crash? Are we saying the ship crashing in the trailer is not the derelict? What do you mean, 'clinging to Alien'?

Perhaps it is LV426 with an atmosphere, which dues to some unforeseen action is destroyed rendering the planetoid baren and uninhabitable..... Takka, knowone has told us anything, its all speculation, unless you have read the script. Anything could happen, that why its so much fun to speculate!

The more I look at this picture, the more symbolic it appears to me. It's clearly been chosen for us, to show a very specific moment. One of the pivatol moments of the original film is when Kane is being returned to the ship. Dallas is ordering the airlock to be opened, Ripley refuses, and Ash overrides. from that moment, we now know, the humans represented by Ripley, surrendered what little control of situation they thought they had, to company represented by Ash and of course the Alien. I think that this picture is showing a similar confrontation. The person standing in the centre, arms outstretched, perhaps mediating, perhaps trying to convince the figure at the entrance to let them back on board, or to stop them. A literal and metaphorical "threshold" moment. It's richly symbolic in other ways too. Between the landing site and the pyramid is a road, a bridge between the civilizations of Alien and Man. There's the is gap in the wall surrounding the pyramid, reminiscent of a gateway, a drawbridge to an ancient castle, an enemy fortress. whilst we, the viewer is at the threshold, the gate of our own castle, the door is open, the drawbridge lowered. The last line of defence to own civilization, perhaps?

The more I look at this picture, the more I love it. It’s clearly been very carefully selected to represent a specific event. I am reminded of a powerful moment in the original film when, on returning with Kane to the ship, Dallas is prevented from entering the airlock. Mankind, represented by Ripley, shows caution and denies access. Ash, of course, ignores her and open the airlock. In retrospect, we can see in that moment how Mankind surrenders what control it thought it had to the Company and of course the Alien. It was allowed to cross the last line of defence. From that moment, none were safe. In this picture we see a similar confrontation. The party have returned to the ship, there is a single person standing in “the Breach”. Defending the entrance. The central figure is poised, arms outstretched, offering balance, mediation. Or perhaps they’re attempting to convince that person to let them in. The Pyramid, appears to be surrounded by a wall, a fortification, in the style of an ancient castle or keep. There is a gateway entrance, symbolic of a lowered drawbridge. The road is symbolic of the journey mankind has made between the two worlds. Another bridge. We, the viewer, observe from the safety of the ship, as we did in the original film. The door is lowered, like a drawbridge. The last line of defence to our own castle, our civilization. Are we about to surrender once again to the Trojan Horse, the unseen enemy at the gate?
