Exclusive: Ridley Scott On Prometheus
Talks Space Jockey and ratings
Ridley Scott's Prometheus adorns the cover of this month's Empire (on sale tomorrow, fact lovers) and his words are to be found inside. Tremendous words they are, too.
The director sat down to talk exclusively through his impending science-fiction epic, soup to nuts, delving deep into his Alien past to shed light on his return to the world of the Space Jockey.
"[I've wanted to revisit it for] years! Years, years, years," he stresses, of Alien's space traveller subplot. "I always wondered when they did [Aliens] 2,3 and 4 why they hadn't touched upon that, instead of evolving into some other fantastic story. They missed the biggest question of them all: who's the big guy? And where were they going? And with what? Why that cargo? There's all kinds of questions."
Another question for Scott is the film's rating. He hints that the violence may have been toned-down enough to facilitate a PG-13 rating, but intriguingly suggests that the impact will match the R-grade shocks of Alien and Aliens. "The question is, do you go for the PG-13, [which] financially makes quite a difference, or do you go for what it should be, which is R? Essentially, it's kinda R."
"It's not just about the blood, it's about ideas that are very stressful. I'm not an idiot, but I'll do everything I can to get the most aggressive film I can."

MemberOvomorphMar-28-2012 9:04 AMSounds to me like he's preparing people for PG13. At least that sounds like press talk we've all heard before. Oh well, I guess that means an attractive DVD.

MemberOvomorphMar-28-2012 9:57 AMbut to be honest, if the first Alien film was released today, theres a good chance it would be rated PG13. Nothing to worry about.

God bless him....that's we 'Alien' fans respect Ridley over other certain directors and sequels............

MemberOvomorphMar-28-2012 11:00 AM@ ass end of space
that's what I'm trying to tell the whiners here about.
R-rated or PG-13 ratings do not reflect the same level
of violence and gore.
No matter movies or video games, the ratings are not
consistently given. Sometimes you get a PG-13 movie
with a R-rating (Bad Boys in Germany) and sometimes
you get a PG-13 rating for a R-rated movie (all Alien movies
in most European countries and East Asia).
And I'm quite sure that Prometheus will get through a PG-13
rating despite of some R-rated scenes ;)
FOX is powerful and I'm sure they have some influence with the
rating institution though it is officially not allowed.

MemberOvomorphMar-28-2012 11:34 AM@craigamore...he could threaten them with walking...I would have used my Burke-like manipulation techniques to make sure I had the upper hand...lol
seriously though does everything have to be a PG these days? We all know the only reason for that is money...what about art? Ridley and Giger are R rated men..this film is an R film by its very nature...give it a fckin R, 18

MemberOvomorphMar-28-2012 11:39 AMPeople can try to spin the PG-rating in every which way they want.....its still bad news im sorry to say. Hopefully we get the real deal in Europe and the PG-stuff is just in the US...the trailers suggest as much.

MemberOvomorphMar-28-2012 11:40 AMoh and I just remembered...David Fincher...did not flinch with his R rating for Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, refused to remove the rape scenes...Film is also not being released in India due to him refusing to cut the rape scenes out..imagine the revenue from an entire country lost....some people do stand their ground for the sake of the movie
and Ridley is bigger than Fincher in terms of directors...

MemberOvomorphMar-28-2012 12:30 PMI think Ridley knows exactly what his film will be rated and he's prepared for it playing in theaters in two ratings version....PG 13 and R, playing alongside each other in multitheater complexes. In fact, I believe he's so business smart he wouldn't have it any other way....he makes Fox happy, theater owners satisfied, us delirious, and made most important of all he himself stays TRUE. I really believe all this coyness, all this angst about the rating will ultimately be seen as yet one more component of the PR campaign. I've seen so many films come out playing on 2,3 or 4 screens at the same place..That's the logical, business end of things.....grab everyone you can. The challenge of editing 2 versions and lining up theaters is less than no challenge at all....This is Sir Ridley Scott, not Michael Cimino or George Lucas the creator and destroyer of Star Wars

MemberOvomorphMar-28-2012 3:20 PMI'm looking forward to the movie. I think it'll be great, and I don't expect to be disappointed.
As for the film's rating: In a world where a recent documentary about bullying is threatened with an R rating (thus making it unwatchable by the film's target audience) but a recent film based on a young adult fiction novel that features kids killing each other is rated PG-13, I really don't understand why the MPAA would have a problem allowing a PG-13 version of Prometheus to include what decades ago would have been considered R-rated material. (I'm referencing other comments I've seen where people said they felt if Alien were released today, it'd only have a PG-13 rating.)
Fall down seven times, get up eight.

MemberOvomorphMar-29-2012 7:52 AMSorry if I sound naive but with the recent release of the Blu-Ray box-set that included Alien, would the certificate change if it was now deemed PG-13 when they released it? As its still considered 18(R). I'd be very suprised if it would be a PG-13 in my opinion.
