MemberOvomorphMar-29-2012 5:37 PMWe went to Europe in 2005, and traveled north through Switzerland, where we entered Gruyere. It had been years since I'd really thought about Giger and Alien, but our tour guide, upon entering, told us of this strange "bar", said the owner was some sort of artsy type, and obviously crazy...
Well, of course we get there to see the castle really, but on the way up venture to the bar AND find none other than HR Giger himself, in the street, and of course, the "Museum Bar" was his. A FANTASTIC place HERE and we had to educate the entire tour group and the tour guide about how this wasn't just some crazy fruitloop...lol. We got a few shaky pictures with Giger and spoke to him briefly, but would've stayed all day had we not been with a group. We spent 30 seconds running to the castle, and the rest with Giger, lol... Haven't made it back, but hope to soon... I don't know how often Giger gets out amongst the masses, but can't imagine it very often...
The bar is a FANTASTIC place---I don't know how much money Giger and his investors spent, but it looks like a set from Alien. If you're ever in the area, be sure to go!
I know it probably doesn't mean much to anyone else, but if there's one person out there who might get the chance to visit, then it's worth it. I couldn't believe a tour guide didn't know the BIRTH of the LOOK of an entire franchise was born in that man's head....

MemberOvomorphMar-29-2012 6:16 PMI went to the Giger bar in Japan and it was fantastic!! I swear it was like walking into his paintings. The bar had these space bone chairs and the restaurant area was a huge 4 story circular area with openings looking down onto a revolving spotlight. The food was just as odd. A lot of crustacean dishes and some erotic looking dishes. (i.e. a sausage coming out of a papaya) I remember taking a cab there in the pouring rain and walking towards it. It was a cross between Blade Runner and Alien and people actually had those light up umbrellas. Great memories. I even kept a few souvenirs from the bar.

MemberOvomorphMar-29-2012 6:36 PMIt WAS in Tokyo but now I hear it's closed because the Yakuza was taking it over. Read it here. I also have the brochure and a few bar coasters. I hope I did that link right.
