MemberOvomorphApr-02-2012 12:07 PMI've just seen the worst of all nightmares, James Cameron has said that he had discussed making the follow-up to Prometheus with Ridley Scott!!!!!
I can't believe it, JC was responsible for the "shootum-up" that f-----d the original concept that lead to it's total degredation and now he's talking about doing it again!!!!

MemberOvomorphApr-02-2012 12:24 PMMeh, it's not time to worry yet. Now you mention Prometheus Resurrection and I'll go ahead and do jumping jacks on that panic button.

Both Alien and Aliens were outstanding movies!
I agree that there was a degradation in the series but it started with placing a "flagship" movie series like Alien into the hands of a first time film director... Mr. Fincher.
From there it just gets worse.

MemberOvomorphApr-02-2012 1:20 PMI'd be interested to see how Alien 3 would have turned out if the studio people would have left Fincher alone and let him do the movie he wanted to do.

MemberOvomorphApr-02-2012 1:25 PMYou are definitely in the minority if you dislike Aliens. Awesome flick from beginning to end so stop the hate.

Why can't WE have a different opinion about it? How is being in the minority bad?

MemberOvomorphApr-02-2012 3:14 PMWe should celebrate the feat of counting both Scott and Cameron as auteurs of this illustrious franchise. Even Fincher has established himself, so if only he was at the helm of Alien 3 today, my oh my what a trilogy we might have had. I'd just change the title from Alien 3 to Alienses.

MemberOvomorphApr-02-2012 4:05 PMAliens was a great action movie. One of the best action movies of our time. But it pales in comparison to the Original ALIEN. The concepts presented in the first film are completely dumbed down in the second. (i.e. the alien becomes a race of large bugs.)
Again, don't get me wrong, ALIENS is a hell of a fun movie that I will always love. But its no ALIEN. Hey , you can do ALOT worse than Cameron directing a Prometheus sequel, but I would prefer Scott direct it. Hell, I prefer Fincher direct it!
The reason ALIEN3 turned out less-than-perfect was because of the studios' interference. (Combine that with Fincher's first theatrical outing and that just makes a horrible combo.) Despite all the production/post-production problems, the end result was pretty good in my opinion, which speaks volumes for a first time director.

MemberOvomorphApr-02-2012 9:15 PMThe Terminator was Cameron's 1st movie. The production company made him cast Arnie, which.... lets face it ruined his idea of an 'infiltration unit' all they had to do was be on the lookout for an Olympia. (no dog required.)
I often wonder if Cameron wasn't sleeping with Gale Hurd would he have even been the director on that movie or even Aliens.

MemberOvomorphApr-02-2012 9:38 PMYou can't go from a movie centered on one xeno, to hordes of them -including a gigantic queen- then back to just one. In terms of audience expectations, that was never going to work.

MemberOvomorphApr-02-2012 9:48 PMI still wonder... what would the wooden monastery be like. I could just imagine them refusing to fight and being tested/punished by ghawd haha

MemberOvomorphApr-02-2012 10:14 PMAlien3 has moments, but I can't imagine how the studio ever agreed to allowing the Newt character to be written out of the franchise--just a huge mistake. Bigger mistake: making your main character immune to the danger of your monster. (Maybe that sounded better on the page, but it absolutely sucked the life out of the Ripley story arc. Terrible decision.) Also, big mistake not utilizing a wider environment on Fiorina--getting the story outside, and especially in space.
I understand the type of film Fincher wanted to make, but these failures are partially on him.
An Alien film needs a SF director, or at minimum, a geek that gets it. Fincher and Jeaunet, for as brilliant as they both are as filmmakers, they were inspired choices, but probably not good choices for those films.
