Alien Drone
MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 12:04 AMMaybe it's just me, but for the life of me, I can't see all the accolades over the Blade Runner movie. I've tried to sit and watch it several times, but just got really bored with it and lost interest. In fact, I thought it was one of the worst science fiction movies of all time.
Am I alone on this or do others share my opinion on the movie? I thought it was terrible!

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 12:09 AMSounds like you feel about Blade Runner as some people feel about all the Alien sequels...just a matter of individual taste and priorities

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 7:50 AMWell it is impressive if you think that the extent of Science fiction in film to that point was Grade Z monster films, Grade B lost in space, star trek (i think Star Trek, the slow motion picture had already been released) and Alien.
It is less impressive now then what is was as so many film producers have borrowed the look and feel of the movie. However to its credit, it is at the heart, a love story, and one of the few love stories I can stand watching.

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 7:57 AMIm guessing the majority of the nay-sayers were not even ALIVE when Bladerunner first premiered, and have no idea what a ground breaking film it was for 1982.
If this had been done during "their" time, the ATARI neon sign would have been a YAHOO or AOL ad.

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 10:09 AMI agree that people who weren't alive (or old enough) to appreciate it aren't going to do so. It's like me when I was a kid not understanding my father saying what a great movie "Forbidden Planet" was/is (don't get me wrong, I love that movie, but it didn't hold up to movies that I grew up on like, say, "Star Wars" or "Alien". That whole look and feel of "Blade Runner" was something that was really new for the time. That, along with the debates over the many different changes the studio inflicted on Ridley (different endings, cut scenes, Harrison Ford's narrative voice overs) and "The Case of the Missing Sixth Replicant" (was it Deckard or just an editing mistake?) kept this movie alive in the minds of sci-fi fans for years.

Wait What? Um, you forgot 2001. And Solaris, Stalker, Clockwork Orange [movie i hate but many love]. There is tons of great scifi pre-Blade Runner. Even the original "Planet of the Apes" and shit
Plus, I want that neon Atari sign for my window. I always have wanted it.

This list minus a few exceptions [i would have "A Boy and his Dog" on it instead of star trek the motionless picture, and I strongly dislike close encounters. Star Wars is space opera which I class as different then sci-fi, superman is a super hero flick.] is a pretty good overview of good scifi pre-blade runner. THX1138 I can't believe I forgot. Love that movie.
Time Bandits as well. There is tons of amazing pre-Blade Runner scifi that doesn't insult peoples intelligence. Post Blade Runner, there is far LESS good stuff. Maybe a handful of true greats but for the most part misses.

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 11:59 AMI think of "Bladerunner" as Film Noir with SciFi elements in the same way I see "Alien" as a horror film with SciFi elements. It's not a straight up SciFi like "2001: A Space Oddyssey". I don't think "Bladerunner" was ever meant to be the kind of action-scifi we're used to today. I like that it's introspective and dark and melancholy.

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 1:10 PMAm I missing something or are we not counting Star Wars (1977) or Empire Strikes Back (1980) as SciFi films? I'm almost 40, and if I remember correctly, after SW hit big the studios were pumping out S/F films at the cyclic rate to try and ride the wave. That first Trek snooze-fest was originally supposed to be a revival of the series, wasn't it? The Black Hole and Outland are two movies prior to Blade Runner that I think might not have been made without the renewed interest.
I like BR, but I definitely have to be in the mood to watch it. Not a film I'd pop in the Blu ray player to kill time on a Saturday afternoon.

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 1:27 PMI wasn't born when BladeRunner was initially released. (Born in 83.) Yet, its my second favorite Sci-Fi film. (ALIEN is the first.)
Its just a matter of taste/opinion.

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 1:30 PMI count "Star Wars" and the such as space opera. Just fun westerns/serials in space.

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 6:00 PMI finally got into Blade Runner after writing a paper on it in college. The paper was on comparing the style of Blade Runner to Fritz Lang's Metropolis. Ridley Scott had said he used the architectural style of buildings for Blade Runner. It's funny, but the 1982 cut of Blade Runner was on Encore this past Sunday. After viewing the 1991 Director's Cut, the 1982 version(especially with the Deckard V.O.) wasn't all that exciting. In the end, I'd have to consider Blade Runner as Ridley;s 2nd best film, with Alien as #1.

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 6:06 PMI see ZERO similarities, although in fact there must be thousands, they both feature a MODERN city and in both that city is really the story itself...however, and Rutgers incredible acting aside, I find BLADERUNNER to be maybe the single most overrated film I have ever seen!!! After watching it many times over I find it impossibly boring to watch today...where as with Alien I am never board by it, even after 50 gazillion viewings. I understand why it's so popular but I Just find it to be impossibly slow and empty with regard to substance. The final image of Ford picking up one of the replicants paper creations did not really leave such a lasting imprint with me, as much as I love creativity and all...in the end it's just that one thing more than any other for me..."Boring".

AdminPraetorianApr-03-2012 6:10 PMThis documentary of Blade Runner is possibly the best I have ever seen. If you never liked Blade Runner maybe this will change your mind. It's told by Ridley, the actors and everyone involved in the film. Most notably, it shows how much pressure the Studio "money Men" put on Ridley Scott. Sad how much they made him cut out of the movie and the lack of vision they had. There are 8 parts. I linked #2.

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 6:13 PMawesome stuff man, thank you gonna watch it all...maybe I'll learn something that'll make me appreciate it a lot more. I actually enjoyed BLACK RAIN far more than Bladerunner.

MemberOvomorphApr-04-2012 8:14 AMShane, you must remember that most folks outside of film majors never saw Solaris, or Stalker. I did forget 2001, but then again, that is the film that I don't care for as much as I should. For me, 2001 is a long boring bit, cool bits out in Jupiter and HAL, then a Acid trip.

blade runner rocks
MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 11:21 AMI agree with PrometheusMan - Blade Runner kicks ass every time - its not as gung ho as Alien which is maybe where Sparticus is coming from in his early review but you need to get behind what you see visually in BR and feel the pain and humanity thats at the centre of this great vision of the future.
