MemberOvomorphApr-08-2012 8:25 AMThinking about the xeno's head. How does the Xeno see and hear? what instinctive/intelligent functions arise from/in that head? what sort of brain would a cranium like that carry? why does it have that double mouth? why is it so smooth compared to the rest of its body? what does it eat and how does it withstand/handle its own acid? just curious

MemberOvomorphApr-08-2012 1:34 PMYes, this is irrelevant, however Conan is freaking hilarious. Did any of you see the trailer to Thor he had on his show last summer? Sorry, I'm too lazy to find a link to it.

MemberOvomorphApr-08-2012 3:11 PMFrom watching that you tube movie, doesn't it remind of a human skull or better still Ripleys alien baby in Alien resurrection. I bet this ties into Prometheus and the alien dna is mixed with our own.

Aquanix
MemberOvomorphApr-08-2012 3:31 PM@Pulserifle Yes that same thought occurred to me. Perhaps the Xeno evolved to have a cranium that unifies sensory functions in a different way by having a kind of external thalamus.

Greg Focker "Oh yeah, you can milk anything with nipples"
New Born "I have nipples Greg, could you milk me?"
LOL

AdminPraetorianApr-08-2012 5:17 PMJames Cameron removed the dome because he was worried about it's durability, LOL! So the skeletal look to the head in Aliens was 100% due to production practicality. That's why it looked the way it did the picture Alien DNA posted.
@Bella, ty for the link. :D

MemberOvomorphApr-08-2012 11:03 PMI am in the camp of folks who think of the dome as a sensory organ.
I would like to add my own bit of speculation though...
If you were to thump it with a flicked middle finger, it would probably make a similar sound to thumping an eggplant.

Xenomorph5000
MemberOvomorphJul-02-2012 11:31 PMAquanix, the mythos surrounding the Xenomorphs have been rendered in detail in the seven movies and in numerous print mediums. For the in depth info I suggest you find several of Dark Horse's graphic novels and read the "Aliens : Colonial Marines Technical Manual" (ISBN 0-06-105343-0).
Here is some information that may help answer your questions.
The Xenomorph's vision is believed to be based on both the visible spectrum and a form of extrasensory perception. The exoskeleton covering its head covers the "eye sockets" in the front of its skull which act as photoreceptors like the retina at the rear of your eyeballs. Its elongated head is also covered in nerve bundles which act as sensory receptors for spatial relations and thought based communication. Its brain is a mass of nerves and its exact shape is somewhat undefined, being that it is seemingly both inside its cranium and outside as well. As for its intelligence one could argue that its intelligence is equivalent to 100+ IQ with practical problem solving skills. Being hive minded creatures they learn from each other increasing their possible intelligence. It's mouth and its double jaw are just a product of evolution, like your two legs. In the written mythos there are four noted classes of Xenomorphs: Queen, Hive Guardian, Drone, and Warrior. The Hive Guardian class was only depicted in one graphic novel. The Xenomorph portrayed in the first film was a hive drone. Most of the Xenomorphs portrayed in the second film were of the warrior class. The drone class is notably different from the warrior class by the smooth exoskeletal dome where as the warrior class has a ridged dome. Xenomorphs eat whatever they need to, as long as this does not interfere with the hives needs. As for the acid, it has never been nailed down to exactly what purpose it served. Speculation points to it not being blood but a defensive mechanism like the toxins in a frogs skin. The physiology of the Xenomorphs are believed to be based on fluorocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons rendering them immune to the negative effects of the acid and the harshness of deep space.
I hope this was helpful and informative for you.

MemberOvomorphJul-03-2012 7:23 AMMaybe the head crest is also, in part, like that of the dinosaurs Hadrosaur and Parasaurolophus partly decorative as much as fuctionality. Its brain stem could have been in its body structure stretched along the entire length of the elongated skull where as ours is concentrated in a ball shape much like a lump of bread dough. Their brain functions are designed differently to that of ours, it would be interesting if there was a cross section done by the concept art department showing how they imagined the creatures anatomy to be.

HYPERiON
MemberOvomorphJul-03-2012 3:14 PMHere's a thought about the shape and function of the xeno head. It's actually a natural protective design for the various drones/warriors etc from rival hives! As we know the alien lifecycle starts with the egg and the facehugger. If you think about it, a xeno drone can never be impregnated because the elongated head prevents the enemy facehugger from latching, plus the extra set of jaws inside the mouth attack the facehugger's tube even if it finally manages to hug the drone victim! Also I once read somewhere (maybe a comic book) that xenos are silicon based creatures. The acidic blood is indeed a defence mechanism (xenos are supposed to be a bioweapon after all) but their blood has no damaging effect on their physiology. A muckus substance is always covering them, driping from their mouths, giving them the sickening look of glossy black carapace. Thus even if a xeno drone defends itself from enemy facehuggers or enemy drones, acidic blood will not hinder it in any way.
I apologise in advance as English is not my native language...
