Could David be Weyland? In other words, could Weyland have had his consciousness transferred to an artificial body...into David? I was reading about a) Weyland's comment in the new footage about how David will live forever and he (Weyland) will be dead by the time they hear the message b) thinking about the article that was posted yesterday the echoed some of my own thoughts about David fusing with the SJ technology and then attacking Shaw in the final seen of the trailers (see What is the human-sized thing attacking Shaw thread) and I thought, what a perfect way to become god-like. And what a terrifying and original concept (I can't think of any other movie that did something similar). We've all seen the super-rich and powerful character hell bent on eternal life before, but transferring consciousness to a synthetic body and then either purposefully or accidentally fusing with alien bio-mechanical technology...that would be a new one as far as I know. It makes some sense when you consider David's fascination with the life form he finds in the temple and the apparent larger role a lot of people are convinced he will play in the story. If in fact the human-sized thing attacking Shaw in the final scene of the trailer is a bio mechanically morphed David, it makes even more sense because she would likely be trying to stop him. Finally, if that is his intention, to fuse with their technology, there's a perfectly plausible cause for Ridley to specifically mention the ill-fated nature of trying to be like the god's as one of the major warnings he took from the Prometheus myth. These are just ideas; I'm not convinced of them. I just want to hear all of your thoughts on the subject.

@craigamore What do you think is a more terrifying concept, an android fusing with alien technology to become a god, or a human doing it?

I don't like it becuase it would then seem to detract from the ominous nature of David's personal agenda as a non-human, particularly with the shot of him looking at his finger and stating 'Big things have small beginnings.'

Hey Whiskuz....I have one word...."Freejack" 1992 starring Emilio Estevez, Mick Jagger, Renee Russo, and Anthony Hopkins

@craigamore Yeah, I'm not convinced either, but for argument's sake, if Weyland has been there and know's what's there and is facing his own mortality, why couldn't that agenda be his?

@Rick Yeah, there have been tons of movies with mind replacement aspects, but have there been any where someone does it to become a bio-mechanical god? I know this may be too crazy of a scenario, but I'm just curious to know what people think. Somebody posted something else that may explain some things better while I was creating this thread. He proposes that David has too much ego and self-interest and hatches a plan to fuse with the technology and become god-like.

It's not as interesting a story to tell....If he can just transfer his consciousness from David to David, he alreadt has god-like immortality and the point of seeking it on the planet is lost....there's also something far more interesting about the psychology of the android, not being human, not completely contemplating what human emotion is and how it relates to them......One of the most fascinating moments in 'Alien' is Ash's speech about the alien being “a perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility…I admire it's purity...a survivor, unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality.” That monologue says more of a profound nature about how Ash views the human condition than how he views the alien.....the question then would be, how does that play into David;s psychology? How will David relate to the situation and what about that moment I earlier described in my first post makes it so ominous? That's what is fscinating about David's character and David being Weyland just ruins that in my opinion...

ok, lets delve this rabbit hole for a minute. The scenario you posed kinda makes sense. I think Weyland Cryo'ed himself looking to gain immortality, once Prometheus landed Vickers wakes the old man. Then why not do some sort of neural transference if that is possible at that time who knows. Weyland did say his ambition knows no bounds. Why instead of transfer his presence to David, instead try to transfer his mind to a SJ thus making him a god and gaining access to all the new techy toys and somehow through the process kick starts the xenomorphs?

To answer your question directly Whiskuz.....as we don't know what David will or will not do...I can't say which is more terrifying because I have no frame of reference.......I would have to saying that the apparent ambiguity of David's motives from that one shot alone makes an indivual agenda on his part more disturbing as it's impossible to relate to a conscioussness that would likely not understand or relate to yours.....see what I mean...

@Rick For arguments sake, I would be assuming that an android, being essentially a machine, can be engineered to receive a human brain or something else that carries consciousness whereas we don't have hundreds of years of medical knowledge of the SJs like we do relating to humans. Of course that's a big leap, but I think it's a much, much bigger leap to assume that we'd know how to do the same thing with respect to an alien race. Honestly what would be the logical next step after Androids have been created? I think it would be bio-mechanical combinations, so I don't think it's too remote of a possibility with respect to Weyland and the true aims of his endeavors. Something else to consider is that possible David's real assignment is to help Weyland, who could be on board the ship somewhere morph with the SJs technology.

I think that this is WAY beyond Weyland wanting to transfer his consciousness to an android. He is a driven, obsessive individual full of pride. He probably thinks of himself as the GREATEST MAN to have ever lived based on his achievements, and now he wants to learn how to cheat death itself. The comments from today explaining what Weyland tells in the crew in the Hologram brief are very telling I think. He used the phrase something along the lines of him wanting to be able to "stand shoulder to shoulder with the gods themselves". That is what Weyland wants.. He wants to know the secret of LIFE itself an be able to create a NEW durable LIVING body (or bodies) for himself in order to give him everlasting life. He doesnt want to be an android. He even speaks about how David will never know the wonders or pleasures of being "ALIVE" because he has "NO SOUL".

@craigamore I love that part of Alien too, but I think the Android obsessed with the beauty of another life form has been beaten to death. That's what I expect an Android to think in the same situation because I've seen it so much. I like the idea someone else posted about David being so human-like that he tries to fuse with the Alien technology out of hubris and ego. However, a problem I see with that scenario is that it wouldn't really make sense, I think, if it wasn't a human that was trying to be god-like when considering the prometheus myth. I think it would work best if there was a human that went to terrifying links to become god-like, from the myths perspective. That's not to say my OP is the best realization of that myth though.

@Canadaphil Good point. Maybe he sees David as a temporary fix then and that's why he on this planet researching the temple? Just trying to play devil's advocate.

We'll just have to wait and see I guess....

I don't think his comciousness will be transferred. I believe he is in a cryostate and he will be brought back to life with the hope of learning the key to immortality from the engineers. Weyland Industries earns patent number 18,364,003 for Method and Apparatus for device able to temporarily restart brain activity of deceased individuals.

This is true he could have been cryo'ed upon death and then jumpstarted again once they found the jockeys. This would make sense of the old man in the wheel chair/

So could the human-sized bio mechanic thing attacking shaw in the final scene of the trailer be Weyland? They're not showing the face, possibly because it's a familiar one---David or Weyland.
