MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 3:09 PMBefore you even start reading this, understand that I wrote this post to discuss how I "feel" about seeing Prometheus again vs. Cloverfield and the potential reasons why. I'm not saying I think one or the other is a "better" movie, just discussing which one was more enjoyable to me along with some potential reasons.
I can honestly say that there isn't a single scene in Prometheus I want to see again. That's not to say there weren't some great scenes, but the monsters were shockingly unremarkable and the death scenes really weren't that horrific, besides Noomi's reaction to Holloway's death, but even that ended way to soon. I hate hearing this come out of my mouth, but it's how I feel. I thought the movie went back and forth between good and bad for a while before it just got relatively un-enjoyable.
After reading some of the non-spoilerish reviews on here, I prepared myself for a clever, but somewhat cheesy summer blockbuster that offered a heavy dose of mystery, like Cloverfield, although I had hoped for something darker and more sophisticated. Honestly, I feel like Cloverfield had a lot more coherent and meticulous thought put into it.
Cloverfield was far from a perfect movie, but after walking out of the theater, I wanted to see it again, and when I did there were a number of scenes I was eagerly looking forward to. The way they chose to reveal the monster made me want to watch the scenes over and over again. Although I was anticipating that movie just as much as this one and was just as active with respect to following the viral campaign, I went into the movie knowing so much less than I did this time. When I finally got to see that news footage of the creature after the bridge scene, it was pretty awesome, even though you didn't get to see the whole monster at that point. A few minutes later, when they are heading down into the subway and the creature almost steps on the characters, I was shocked, as I was supposed to be, at the deafening noise and short glimpse of the creature. There were no scenes in Prometheus that made me feel like that.
While I think Cloverfield's concept---the story of a giant monster attack on NY from the perspective of a group of people stuck in the city...in essence you only know what they know---is definitely interesting, I think it's far less interesting on paper than the ideas behind Prometheus. However, I think the execution of Cloverfield was far better on a few levels.
I thought the mystery in Cloverfield was far more satisfying than the mystery in Prometheus. You left the theater knowing almost nothing about the monster or where it came from, except that it was probably related to the thing that crashed into the ocean in the last scene. I was thoroughly satisfied given the ride it took you on even though I really wanted to know more about where the creature came from. With Prometheus, I really don't care about any of the questions they left unanswered. I'm not saying I don't want a sequel, but I am not interested enough to continue to discuss them in this forum.
I think the marketing for Prometheus was seriously mismanaged as well. They gave away far too much. I assumed, erroneously, that there must be some major creatures we would be completely surprised by...there were none. And while we had not seen the full Fifield attack scene, the engineer attack scene, or the medpod scene, we new exactly what to expect. I wasn't shocked by anything.
Something else that is completely unforgivable, in my opinion, is major plot elements that appear in trailers but not in the film. One of the trailers showed mutated Fifield with insect-like arms that were very similar to the arms of the creature in the mural. There used to be an animated gif on this page, but it's only a picture now: http://www.prometheus-movie.com/community/forums/topic/3251&page=8. They appeared as normal looking arms in the next trailer and of course were normal in the movie. I have to think that this only happens when there is some kind of major issue with production of a film. It happened in I Am Legend and I left that movie thinking, "how does that happen?!?" More specifically, there was a scene in a preview in which one of the infected's face was right next to Will Smith's face and he was saying, "I can cure you" or something like that. Nothing even close appeared in the film. I just don't understand how this can happen without major production turmoil.
Let me make it clear, I want people to enjoy this movie thoroughly; I would be happy if I were the only person that felt like this. Being that I'm not, I am curious to know if there are other film's you felt were more enjoyable than Prometheus, but shouldn't have been.

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 3:29 PMIt sounds more like you're upset with how they carried out their campaign rather than the film itself..

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 3:32 PMAnd showing scenes or elements in trailers that are not in the actual film is not a marketing decision, that's a mistake.

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 3:48 PMCabin in the woods. I didn't expect to like it but was with very intelligent and catchy script. And different. That's why so many people hate it. This is not the case with Prometheus. There is nothing new or existential in it. Just same old cliches.
Cabin in the woods - reveal and satirize cliches.
Prometheus- use cliches but in a most bad way.

I need to see that! I've been meaning to. Did you know Cabin was co-written and directed by Drew Goddard, who also wrote Cloverfield?
