MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 5:34 PMSo, I was thinking, what was the last GOOD sci-fi film based in space? Specifically one with a horror component? I mean, all of us here KNOW that Prometheus is going to be Legen-wait for it-freaking awesome, but think about it. When REALLY was the last GOOD film like it?
Promethus will be epic to all of us space nerds, but what about to the general public? I mean, this film is going to turn on a whole, younger generation to the concept!
Big things have small beginnings.

Isn't, "The last GOOD Sci-Fi Film, "like" Prometheus, based in Space - specifically with a Horror component", going to be a very, very short list?..
Love it.
Strictly by these terms:
Meeting all of your very strict requirements, I believe, is my actual nomination, [the relatively light "horror" made up for by the sheer depth of the story]:
"Forbidden Planet", 1956.
I give a Special Mention to a film that is quite outstanding, but the story is Earthbound:
"I Married a Monster from Outer Space", 1958.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 7:49 PMKubrick actually insisted that Spielberg direct "A.I.".....and he almost certainly did so, in the self-knowledge that he couldn't pull off the pathos necessary to keep that movie from being a total and complete downer. Kubrick didn't have much faith in humanity.....and the meaning of that term is the central issue of the movie. I've heard folks complain that it's full of "Spielbergian schmaltz," but I think those people are mistaking pathos for sentimentality.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 8:02 PMEvery single movie in Kubricks career was a masterpiece. I dont know if he asked Spielberg to direct AI and the reasons behind that request if that really happened. What I know based on Kubricks work and the love and connection that he had for the Aldiss story, is that a masterpiece never came to life, instead what was delivered to us was a good movie with the spielbergs brand of quality, but not enough to raise the bar to a genius level.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 8:10 PMmoon was eerie, though not horror.
Pitch Black might be the last good one. Sunshine was shit on a stick bad.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 8:17 PMi know I am in the minority, and I agree and even said the I liked the story which was great but the ACTING...?...holy cow how anyone can say that the acting in that film was any better than TERRIBLE would be beyond my understanding. Pitch Black was original, but got ruined IMO by deplorable if you can even call it that presentation and delivery of it's scripted dialogue.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 8:19 PMas for my pick I would have to agree with EVENT HORIZON and I would also say that AVATAR was beyond Great...it changed film making forever as anyone who makes movies will tell you. because of it, because of THAT film, NO ONE ever used the same cameras to make films in Hollywood from the day it was released onward. No one ever will...because Of Cameron and That Film...despite what anyone thought of it.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 8:24 PMwait - how about Hellraiser: Bloodline! Umm, maybe not ;)
@allinamberclad: you bring up a good point, it is a narrow genre and Scott practically reinvented it (aside from all the 50's schlock, Forbidden Planet and a few other excluded).
And there really hasn't been another one as good in that genre since

Jim100a100
MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 8:35 PMSparty - that's a pretty broad statement. You mean Woody Allen used different cameras in his next film because of Cameron? What exactly did he (or WETA) invent that changed everything?

Spartacus
MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 8:39 PM@Jim100a100 No, I should have said, science fiction or any movie involving complicated depth perception as in 3D. My bad, you are absolutely right, too broad a statement. I was wrong. I think you guys know what I meant though. Ridley Scott used different cameras for Prometheus because of it than he was going to originally . He also he will NEVER shoot any film with anything else ever again.

Dude, i wouldn't just make up something like that. Kubrick was a very, very sharp guy. Like the old truism says: "know thyself." ;)

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 8:53 PMa gift since some of you really really loved it... and I admit I liked it graphically speaking , just not the acting.
I made these four forum banners for a friend who also loved that film.
Thought you guys who liked that film would appreciate them.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 9:04 PMCool that there are apparantly a lot of "Forbidden Planet" fans on here. The whole movie screams *1950s!*......but that's only part of its' awesomeness.....well, that, and Leslie Nielsen.
Have you ever seen the time he brought his "fart box" on "The Tonight Show?"

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 9:06 PMOn the Riddick note i really liked Chronicles of Riddick and heard a third movie may be in the works. The 5th element IMO should rate up there in one of the classics of SCI -FI

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 9:07 PMguess I will have to see "PB" again..."basterds"..."just when I thought I was out..."..."

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 9:17 PMIan Holm fine Job acting in Alien but he did an equally fine job in the Fith Element. But thought Gary Oldmans Zorg character was just awesome. He is way under-appreciated.

Chronicles was a movie I had no interest in seeing at theaters and passed on mostly because of Pitch Black. When I watched the DVD I was so impressed with the movie I had to buy it. I hope they explore Riddick's origins more

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 9:26 PMPlanets are cooler than outer space. Only so much you can do on a ship. Alien and 2001 are the only movies that have made it interesting, imo. Even Star Trek (TV) was only really interesting when they touched down.
The 5th Elements was like something right out of Metal Hurlant. Starship Troopers was fun. Dumb, but fun.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 9:26 PMIf thinking interms of great, IMHO that still would be "Blade Runner".
Good would be "The Thing", "Alien Ressurection", Fifth Element" and "12 Monkeys".
Again, just MHO.
