MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 5:34 PMSo, I was thinking, what was the last GOOD sci-fi film based in space? Specifically one with a horror component? I mean, all of us here KNOW that Prometheus is going to be Legen-wait for it-freaking awesome, but think about it. When REALLY was the last GOOD film like it?
Promethus will be epic to all of us space nerds, but what about to the general public? I mean, this film is going to turn on a whole, younger generation to the concept!
Big things have small beginnings.

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 2:40 AMWhat is most funny about Starship Troopers (and I think it is great) is that they totally fucked over Heinlein who wrote it to be taken seriously.
Heinlein had some strange views. He got so nuts with them that his friendly rivalry with Arthur C Clarke became this bitter hatred (according to some) because he thought Clarke was some kind of commie.
VH deserves an award just for making it into a brilliant spoof on everything Heinlein loved.

Thank you for the article. I guess Kubrick knew what was coming and he trusted his loved long-dated project to his friend. Spielberg is also brilliant director (Schindlers List, Jurassic Park, Minority Report, Saving Private Ryan and many others) and obviously AI was in good hands and the movie turn out a lesson of humanity given by a robot. Touching and provocative.
Well in my list I rank sci-fi movies in this order:
Classic masterpieces:
Alien
2001 - Space Odissey
The Thing (John Carpenters movie)
Great films:
Aliens
District 9
Matrix
Moon
Children of Men
Event Horizon
Predator
Terminator 1 and 2
Cube
The Mist
Minority Report
AI
Forbidden Planet
Silent Running
War of the Worlds (both versions)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (old version)
Metropolis
Inception
Invansion of the Body Snatchers (first two versions)
V for Vendetta
WALL-E
Robocop
5th Element
Jurassic Park
Back to the Future
Total Recall
Alien 3
Contact
Dark City
Tron
The Fly
A Clockwork Orange
THX 1138
Solaris (tarkovsky)
Good Films:
12 Monkeys
Pitch Black
Sunshine
Avatar
Cypher
I Robot
I am Legend
Source Code
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Mimic
Serenity
The Fountain
Starship Troopers
Stargate
Gattaca
The X-Files
The Truman Show
Outland
They Live
The Abyss
Solaris (last version)
Logans Run

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 7:53 AMGreat discussion!
I agree with the fact that compiling a list of sci-fi films in space is difficult, but that's the point, isn't it? They are few and far between. And a list of subjectively "good" ones is even more difficult.
There is this inherent quality to space (as was discussed-the isolation, the unknown) that creates horror all on it's own. Sure, there are parts of earth that have gone undiscovered, but we know to a certain degree, what we will/can discover.
I LOVED Event Horizon, but to call it a ripoff of Alien is a bit of a stretch. Alien set the bar for a lot of films thereafter, and sure, the concept of something evil and deadly being released was the same, but that's where the similarities ends. EH is crew member pitted against crew member (secondary to some sort of possession; it's been a while, but I recall it being more of a psychological thriller than monster-hunt); in Alien they have a common enemy (they're not killing each other).

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 3:12 AMIntresting dallas!dallas! ... I first saw Starship Troopers on shrooms, and said "what the fuck is going on". This movie was one of the first I remember seeing that had no title at the beginning and jumped right into a propaganda campaign with use of commercials. Media influence seems to be a reoccurring theme with director Paul Verhoeven, who also did Total Recall, and Robocop. He seams to have a sarcastic view on media in society since all these films feature commercials that are almost comical.

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 8:18 AMIMHO there really haven't been any "great" SciFi films in a while. But, I have watched Sunshine quite a few times and have recommended it.

I actually agree completely with your list bud!
@alteredstate
casshern was pretty interesting as well.
As for good sci fi most films have been mentioned already. Cargo a German sci-fi was pretty interesting and well executed film.
I think there should be a mention of Ghost in the Shell. I watched the first film and 2.O and now I'm working on the Stand Alone Complex series and I have to say its amazing! The series almost surpasses the films in many ways.
Anybody agree?
