Doesn't the Space Jockey in Prometheus look a lot smaller than the one in Alien? What do you guys think? maybe they're just different sized space jockeys. not all people are the same size. not all lizards are the same size. not all turtles are the same size. not all elephants are the same size. why would ALL space jockeys be the same size?

Been discussed several times. Sorry. Me gets the feeling this thread will be locked momentarily. While I'm here: The chair, on the other hand, looks the same size. I think that the suit that is being worn by the person/thing sitting in the chair, adjusts to the size of the wearer.

MemberOvomorphApr-18-2012 9:56 PM
YES!, In fact I think at the scene of the trailer is a human or android in the suit. Ie look at their arms, are very short compared to the original SJ. I think the possibilities are: 1) Obviously the suit need to cover or blend with the chair ... 2) It is a human or android, who knows ... 3) Just different design ... IMHO the helmet is not very good in fact resembles a tapir:

That's hilarious.

I agree - the size is way off. And the helmet isn't really a good match proportion-wise, either. The arms are what bugs me, though. The arms of the original space jockey look huge, and extraordinarily long. Almost simian in relation to the rest of the torso. So I think those who theorize that it's a human or android in the chair are probably on the right track.

@John D. I hope it's a human or android ( please God! ) and that the true Space Jockey appear. If it does not then I'll die in the movie theater LOL PS: and yeah @The Xeno, certainly something hilarious LOL

Here's proof that someone else is wearing the 'space jockey' suit in the photo in question... Notice the proportions of the suits behind Shaw are exactly like that of 'Alien'...

MemberOvomorphApr-18-2012 10:20 PM
Yes, but those suits in particular, I doubt the suit of the trailer. Sorry buddy but I totally disagree with you

MemberOvomorphApr-18-2012 10:29 PM
@nate, I think this photo has alot of clues in it....I think, based on size, that these suits become animated, and may be the two sj's we see in trailer....I also think the scene where the purplish slug invades the arm of the suit....I think its these suits, and I think the purplish thing is the sj in some lower form...I think it fuses with the suit in some biomech sort of way....I think thats why we see all the empty sj "shells" and helmets strewn about....what say ye?

John D.

MemberOvomorphApr-18-2012 10:29 PM
@Shambhala - that might be why they decided to show the 'suit' in the trailers - because what they're showing isn't actually one of the alien race, and thus they don't consider it a spoiler. On the other hand, it could be a very SHORT Space Jockey. ...called Mini-Me, or something like that...

MemberOvomorphApr-18-2012 10:33 PM
I think the suit wearer in the trailer is either weyland or one of the prometheus crew....based on size... I think it will be a shocker when revealed

shambs

MemberOvomorphApr-18-2012 10:37 PM
@ John D. I totally agree with you, I hope it's just a spoiler and the big surprise or gift is present in the film. But I think it is possible that a human or android try to use safety technology of the Derelic, why? finally we will know in the movie. IMHO and only speculating of course but it is possible to have connection with the metaphor of Prometheus ... @ cursum_perficio Yes, I can be very possible that what you say ...

John D. The trailers have already shown the Engineers, which may or may not also be the Space Jockey. The one Engineer that I have seen is standing over Shaw on the Prometheus. It looks big, but not SJ big. So, it may be a shorter Engineer or a crew member transforming into one. Remember the original Alien grew quickly to full size without any food. Also, there has only been a mention of the Engineers and nothing that says whether the Engineers are or are not the SJ. There has been a mention of hiring a 6'5" actor to play an Engineer. Supposedly, the Engineers will be CGI similar to Golum.

I also read recently that three Engineers were having lunch outside the U.K. 007 shooting stage. So, we may have a few Engineers in the movie.

what about the fact that the humanoid standing over shaw is human size and has ribbing on its legs in the same way that this one has it on its arm as the armor comes off?

I think when these "it does not look the same as alien" posts come up people seem to forget were talking 30+ years ago. So yes art style will be a bit different and scale is to be determined. Also I know people have said it before ..but in Alien those "suited guys" at the SJ chair are children..not adults. any way ...potato / tomato...

@craigamore LMAO! Yeah, I think it was a pig but I updated my post about the tapir ... mmmm ... but just for fun will preserve the pig here::

LOL I hope you all do not hate me but I think I just found a source of inspiration for Ridley for the new design of the Space Jockey Suit

There is a slight angle on the picture of the new SJ, also the arms may be pointing outwards instead of down towards the handle? to make it appear smaller in this view then the Original SJ

MemberOvomorphApr-19-2012 4:39 AM
@dutch1585 - Thats what it looks like to me too.

ZetaReticuli

MemberOvomorphApr-19-2012 4:58 AM
No. Even at a low angle, the view wouldn't affect the proportion perception of the SJ in relation to the proportions of the seat. On the original big one, looking at it from a low eyeline, the top of the head would still align with the backrest. I'm for the 'suits you sir' camp. This is probably a small upstart, i.e. a person with lofty aspirations.

Guys i aleady worked out in a rough guess the size of the chair. I used the crew in Alien as a gauge i then worked out the Chair size to be 16ft ish Then if thats 16ft i worked out the other parts of the chairs size... This then gave me a rough estimate that the Jockey in Alien was about 12ft tall. (or upto 13ft). Saying the Chair was the same dimentions in Prometheus then that Jockey in the suit is....... about 9ft tall or just over. Yes the Arms look different but it depends on the angle of that shot maybe? The Blue Guy when he is walking to the Chair is larger than the Orginal Alien crew compared to the one in Alien. You see a scene with David and the Jockey in the back ground and the Jockey is like at least 50% bigger than David. Now the Humans Space Helmets are like double the size of their heads, so why cant the Jockeys be like 50% to double that of the Blue Guy? This would explain why the Jockey Head on the Med Table is like 3X that of a Human head.

We have to look at the optical illusion posibility.... The Jockey seems more slumped back on the Chair in Alien. You could take a photo of my upper torso while i lay on a reclining Chair, i could lie with my head right near the very back in one shot and then slouch down in another and it would give the illusion that i was smaller in height in one shot. Things that dont add up to me and cant be explained are the distance of the one part of the chair, in Alien the Jockeys hands are in this part. In Promethus the Jockeys hands are further away. The Jockey in Alien seems to have longer Arms and Ripcage/Torso. But if you look at the Jockeys from the chest up and compared parts of the Chair to the Jockeys. Those parts are simular size compared to the Jockeys. Again who knows... maybe David becomes the Jockey, that would explain the scene with Shaw, maybe he grows and thus when he gets into the chair he has grown from say 6ft to 9ft and by the time the Derelict lands on LV426 he has once again grown to about 12ft. Who knows....

@AlsoKnownAsNate If you look at those Suits in that image... Now look at a Human, their arms come down to the same area. The Blue Guys also look long..... when he is walking etc. But in the chair it seems like the Blue Guy/Jockeys arms have gone all Midget size in proportions. Again it could be the angles... If you take a photo from distance of you with hands straight by your side they will apear really longe. If you take another but bend your elbows in a bit but keep arms at same position your arms would look smaller. I am going for the guy being the Blue Guy, the Blue Guy = Space Jockey but the movie would rather us call them Engineers. How does that explain Alien one... depends on this movie and if its the same Derelict that lands on LV426 i guess we will find out at the end of the movie. There are other missmatches, the Ships look a little different especially inside, this is because Ridley wanted to give the Jockeys a more Mechanical look than the Organic Look of Alien. It does not mean they are not the same, just that Ridley has redesigned/re imagined them. Like how the BSG Cylons and Fighter look different from BSG 80's to BSG 21st Century. Only Ridley has gone for more suptle changes. The only big questions and flaws in Jockey and Derelict for me are.. 1) Where are the 4 sarcophagus 2) How come the Arms Still look very long by that i mean proportions from Elbow to Forearm. ------EDIT----- Just looked again and as i gave in the anolgy of laying down with Arms Straight by side and then when you have arms bent.. You can see the Jockey Shot in Prometheus is as such, messure his arm from elbow to hand, then do a proportion size to shoulder to elbow. Now take same mesurements of Blueguy in Walking Scene the Blueguys upper arm proportion is longer than in that Chair scene. Reason because his Arm is bent and so his upper Arm is facing more towards camera as opposed to being directly flat towards it like his forearm is.

Guys...the two jockeys look different because they are different. Whether or not the new Jockey is intended to be the same one we saw in Alien is irrelevant. If its not the same one, well then the size change is easily explained. If it is the same one that just means Ridley and the designers took artistic license to change it. Just like the changed the chair itself. I really think its the latter, but the point is I think the jockey size, in particular, is one of those things that we shouldn't be too concerned or focused on (IMHO). Just like the subtle texture and size changes on the derelict, derelict interior walls, etc. Just go with it for now.

@tokyoid The jury is still out concerning the creature that is standing over Shaw on the Prometheus. I created a post about this a week or so ago and it was debated furiously. While the pattern on the legs is similar to that of the larger creature that activates the chair, the creature over Shaw is definitely human sized. There is no arguing that. Her leg is in between the legs of that creature and the lower legs are almost the same size when you consider the fact that Shaw's is not up and down. There are a lot of theories about this. Read the old post.
