Did lindeloff take what was a hardcore R Rated Alien Prequel by John Sphaits and dilute it into something much more mainstream and pop?

Well the only thing we seem to know is that Ridley was going for more of a direct link, in which the purpose of the movie was to explain the events that led to Alien, how the Xeno came to be and why and who the Space Jockey/Derelict Ship was and why.
Seems that they thought the alien Xeno had been done to death and so they could take care of the above but explore a much more in depth plot around the Space Jockey and Weyland Corp... I think they then added the Ancient Astronaught/Creation Plot to give more depth and purpose to the story and the Space Jockeys seemingly Bio Tech and Bio/Tera Forming Tech.

What @Frantz said. It's just impossible.
I'm just glad to see a reason for Spaihts' name to get mentioned a little more around here.
However it plays out, you can bet the core of how this story plays out is all Spaihts.
Due respect to Lindelof, but just because Spaihts got bumped out of the saddle for the big name to come in and sprinkle some of his Golden Touch [tm] on it doesn't make Spaihts some kind of joke - or he would never have been in the same building as Ridley Scott, let alone his Office.

Going on Ridley's comments Spaiths script was very mainstream Alien, it was basically just ALIEN 5 set before ALIEN. I imagine this means it just a repeat of the other films in several ways. Lindeloff came aboard and made it stand out from the rest of the films as its own story.

@Mentos
Accepted - very fair comment.
But, that sounds a little like the interpretation Lindelof seemed to want distance himself from, where you say "just"?..Maybe he was just being polite?..
I don't know...
You know what? They are both good Writers and the fact they both had input, can't be a bad thing.
I guess, those interested, are going to have to wait a year or two until, and if, the drafts start appear, so we can see how the Script developed.

Well i think Ridley changed the Script for simular reasons i speculated about.
If the Movie went the route that would apear Alien 5 The Begining...
So most of the movie is about the Xeno and how it came to be, and would show a fair amount of the Xeno Organism. Once Ridley explained how the Alien came to be and the movie led up to Alien.
Where would Ridley go after this.......
Do a Alien 5/6 but Ridley feels the Xeno has been covered to much already.
Do a Prequel of the Prequel.... But Ridley can do that and the story behind Alien in one Movie and this is Prometheus.
Maybe Ridley had ideas of how he wanted the Xeno to Evolve after Alien? Maybe he liked some of the Orginal Script from Alien or had other ideas about the Alien he never explored in Alien.
If he could create a different Alien Organism he could then use some of his ideas he had for that Organism.
Maybe he felt there was a good story to be explored in who the Jockey was and what Weyland Corp and its Agenda was....
Surely the Jockey never existed just to make the Alien Xeno for some Bio Weapon, i mean there is more to Mankind than us just inventing the Nuke!
Surely there is more to Weyland than just some Corp who makes Andriods and wants to collect a Alien sample as a Bio Weapon.
And i think these are ideas that Ridley can explore in this movie, ideas that can then be explored in another movie if he chooses to do so and then steer clear of the Xeno from Alien.
I think he will explain either how/why the Xeno was created and how it came to be on that Derelict on LV426 but he does not want to base a large % of the movie on this subject which is what maybe the Orginal Draft could have been.
At the end of this movie we will get some Answers to the Mystrey of the Xeno/Jockey/LV426 and Derelict what kind of depth who knows, and it may leave some answered questions but they would be questions that dont have no real explanation like the ones left by Alien.
Thus when he gives us the explanation/link to Alien/Xeno Organism, the Door will be closed on that Species as its been covered by Alien to Alien Resurection.
If he had gone for a Literal Sequel then the other elements like the Jockey, Weyland, the Bio Tech etc of the Jockey would all have the Door Shut on them as far as potentialy seqeul or further exploration goes.
This movie will allow them to go explore other elements of this movie, and shut the door on the Xeno.

im glad he chose to make a stand alone film. Something new and original is what sci-fi horror genre needs. not just a refurbished alien prequel sequel.
I trust that Ridley has the vision to see a good script when hes been given one. He liked Sphaits ideas but wanted to expand on the story beyond the Alien franchise
I hope he has the testies to write a hardcore horror script
and I hope Lindleloff doesnt make another Lost .... in space... -_-

I have a feeling that maybe after this movie...
If he does make another related one, we will not hear from the Xeno again by that i mean the Egg-Face Hugger-Chest Burster-Xeno one.
But i also think we wont see anything of the Space Jockeys.
Maybe we will see what happens to the Temple and its contents? Or maybe Ridley would explore more on the Weyland Corp, its Agenda, Ambition and Tech (Andriods) and maybe stuff they come up with create from the Bio Forming Tech they Steal etc.
So a Prometheus 2 i guess we would see no Jockey/Xeno or Derelict.
