Why Alien Universe?

MemberOvomorphMay 09, 20122150 Views37 RepliesIts kind of obvious that RS is wanting to continue with this genre style but not to head down the Alien as we know (Xeno) route etc.
He has also confirmed that there will be no cameos etc and no direct links to Xeno origins etc etc in the film and seems to get sick at times about being asked.
Is the use of the "universe" with no intention to hit on the Xeno side etc a little odd if there is at least no long term or short term intention of links or cameos directly linking in an obvious way?
Would it not have been better to be a new universe, different company, differing alien ship etc etc and just likened to be like Alien?
Is the Alien universe thing just a selling gimic etc?
Don't get me wrong it looks awesome and ill be going to see it but im a little disappointed that the extent of the connection is not showing the Xeno early stages or even creation if they are not natural etc.

Also what is this NEED to have the xeno? Why does it Have to be there? Are we so married to this one design, that frankly is entirely used up and trite by now despite its awesomeness, that we just can't handle its absence?

Well said, craigamore. Long ago, the xeno became a pop-culture icon of movie-monster design......and that's exactly why continuing to milk it like a withering sow's teat, is the wrong thing to do.

I know man, It is hard to believe that people can read that stuff and not vomit in their mouths a little bit.

Well I will say...the very first AVP comic from the late eighties was interesting, but that's as far as I'll go....

Think about it like Star Trek. It's a big universe filled with lots of stuff. It's way more fun then just a fossil with a story that [thankfully] hasn't been told, and a creature that has been so poorly played out that most of us are sick of seeing it.
And, I am gonna go on a limb here and say it is better then every single piece of EU out there. That totally includes AvP and AvP:R.

@ craig...tyvm...
let's all vow to NEVER mention AvP on this site again. Can the staff delete any reference to it in any post from here on out?

This is what i think. in the original film the ship is quite old. almost ancient. the alien ship in prometheus and the ship in alien are two different ships. the planetoid in alien (as i remember from the film had a rotation of 20 minutes) so very small and fast. the planet in prometheus is completely different. the space jokeys get around the galaxy. so they probable have more than one ship. they are not necessarily bad aliens. ie-the warning beacon in the original alien. from the clips it looks as if janek crashes the prometheus into the alien space craft. also scott distancing the story from elements of the alien series. i'd dare say there is not going to be much of space jockey culture left after this film. so...when the company gets the warning from the ship in alien. they know what it is and says. ands seeing as there is nothing left after the prometheus expedition is quite happy to redirect the nostromo. expecting one thing but getting another. the xenomorph. the end. i'm so excited to see scott back in sc fi after all this time. i'm just glad to see sc fi back at the cinema made by a serious director. so it really does not matter about the other films so much. bring it on.

what you all say is all fine and good, and i agree, there is more to the universe, but what you are not acknowledging is this; if the movie does not have anything to do with the Alien franchise, then they are deceiving people. this is my first time looking anything up about the movie (mainly because i didn't want anything spoiled) and all i had seen was one trailer. from that i deduced that this was some form of Alien prequel. if its not that's fine, if it is then i say great, or go decidedly in between that it IS the universe but new plot...but don't make a trailer that is obviously going to make alot of people think it is an actual prequel. RS is a big name- go one route or another, the movie will sell either way, just don't be ambiguous simply to sell tickets. leave that to M. Shamalan...

Just heard Guy Pearce state:
"It's a prequel of sorts, I mean I think they're trying to avoid calling it a prequel only because it seems that every film these days has a prequel, and really, the ideas and the sort of philosophy behind the story are on such a grand scale that it really, to call it a prequel, is to sort of limit it, I suppose, too much. But obviously it leads into the Alien sequence of films"
Source will appear somewhere here soon for the 10th of May.

@ Darksec - I completely agree. Furthermore, I hate it when people seem to defend this "stand alone" crap. Why even put it in the 'Alien' universe and use those infernal space jockeys if you had no intentions of showing us, if at the very least, how the derelict got there, and how the "xenomorph" came to be? I appreciated your comments, and I really believe you're just voicing what a majority of us are already thinking.

It reminds me of the 80's band 'Men Without Hats'. They are really and truly known for their one hit wonder, Safety Dance. It's a great song! Anyhow, they had a concert back in the 90's, and they played all of their songs accept this one. WTF!?
In the same way, I think Ridley Scott wants to use everything other than what made him famous, or what the fans truly want to see (or at least some of them). I've said it all along: if you don't directly explore that avenue, then you're going to piss off a lot of fans.

Also id like to add I too hate AVP and I don't particularly want another xeno-fest as such.
Id like it to link in to the start of Alien somehow even if in a small way. Even if that meaning 2 mins at the end with a radio report coming in that another jockey ship has been spotted crashing on the other planet or as mentioned the who genetic creation element showing the Xeno's creation though all we see at most is an egg at the end or after credits.
Other than that it can be an exploration of the Jockey's
The Xenos kills a whole crew, comes to earth, fights with predator etc has been done to death but I still believe their origins etc can be explored in film.
Maybe even a re-imagining/reboot.........................what?
