I hope so! That was one of my favourite practical effects from ALIEN.

yeah, this was actually one of the first things i ever posted about on this site, some of the references we see just in the trailers. the sound of those doors opening and closing in the air ducts behind dallas was really what i loved. that sound of metal sliding on metal, helped along by a coarse grease...had a very gritty sound. it was spooky in its own right.

A homage to an air duct?!?!? Really!?!? I mean some things are worthy of a homage, while others are clearly not. I'd have to guess that if Ridley saw that someone had suggested he was paying homage to an air duct he would probably have a few "colorful" things to say. LOL!!!!

I always though it sounded kinda like someone drinking a metal milkshake.

Or someone dragging a manhole cover down the street.

Makes me think of a bad tattooing experience I hope I never ever have :-S

RickK you only have to watch Dallas going into the air shafts and see the 'spiral doors' open in front of him and and close behind him then jump over to the varied clips of the 'Chair' rising up out of the floor in Prometheus and not tell me that it's equally fair-to-say that there IS some sort of similarity if not in the direct manner as there is some sort of meaning with regards to 'their' technology as compared to 'Our' technology then certainly the whole of Promehteus is probably filled to the brim with all types of nods and references to Alien "Easter Eggs" be it subtle/indirect or in-your-face and utterly OBVIOUS!!! AS IS THE CASE OF THE FLOOR OPENING UP!!! RICK K!!!!! Use your logic upon this one! It makes sense when you think about it rationally but for a second or two! Hmmm! I try and be patient for people like you, you know...

You were probably just kidding, I will give the beifit of the doubt...I'm not totally unreasonable... Only when it comes to Ex-girlfriends and the like, sometimes my patience is tested! heh! In that capacity or regard for that matter: "I'd Rather Be Eatin' Something Else!"

Yea i think if it was an easter egg we'd be seeing it with tech. on the ship/with equipment. Something that humans made. But hey dont forget "Prometheus" takes place before the events of "ALIEN"..... Maybe SPHINCTER doors hit the market while they were in stasis! ZOMG!!!

No argument there bud, there's no denying they both spiral open (but so does the iris on the camera used to fim it in Alien but that didn't get any credit) - But to say Ridley is paying Homage to an air duct is in my opinion maybe nerding out a bit too much over it, er - I mean reading a little too much into it - LOL - Honestly he'd probably be insulted at such a suggestion.

I would go so far as to say I am a NERD! I am a GEEK! I am a PLEBB ! I am a DWEEB! But now I'm getting paid for it! ha! ha! ha! ha! lol! :-) but on the handsome side of nerdy in my "Proffesional" opinion! lol! :-) But it also goes to show that there is many, many, MANY more layers to the subtext of the film, its about creating atmosphere and 'referrals' without being so obvious about it. And incidentaly, Ridley Scott speaks as I do all the time as far as some of the running commentries I have heard of him. I think he is one of the most tried and tested and celebrated GEEKS/NERDS, call it what you like, of the genre. And if it wasn't for that streak within him, we as fans would even be SITTING HERE debating this concept if it wasnt for his geeky/nerdy nature to want to dare and put a film like this one into creaton in the first place! You know!

Watch the special features on the Alien DVD. He explains it there. Something about Kubrick...I'm can't remember exactly what, its been a while (2 months) since I've seen it.
