However.. i cant help thinking i am going to be disappointed by prometheus
It will be quite a different kind of movie to Alien - to me, that is a masterpiece. It is superbly paced, atmospheric, a real tense thriller, and at the time (well actually to this day) it presents some staggeringly original concepts that well, i just dont think can be surpassed.
The plot of Alien was real simple, with one or two subplots. But from what i have seen and read here of Prometheus, it seems like it is trying to be too much. I think Alien was made as a niche movie, it shocked in its day and gained cult following. A bit like Terminator and comparing that to the rest of the T franchise.
Anyhow, and i want to be wrong on this, i think Prometheus looks a it too glossy, too elaborate, like it is trying too hard because it is trying to come out of the shadow of Alien. ANd, significantly, the Studio sees a cow that it wants to milk. But i guess that is 21st century commercialism (and consumerism!).

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 2:00 PM.....just let Prometheus be Prometheus and forget about Alien...in it's own way it can be just as good or better than Alien....that old classic was fantastic...but prometheus can be a whole new fantastic....if u let it!

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 2:01 PMToo funny Sky! She is worth the cost of admission, right?
I do have to agree with one thing though: The shocking "concept" from Alien- both the horror, and the creature itself, will be very hard to surpass. If RS somehow finds a way, I will be surprised. Not to say I won't like the film if he can't, but just surprised if he pulls it off.

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 2:11 PMI totally understand those who feel that they may be disappointed with the Prometheues film, but in no way shape or form do I agree. This film obviously has a high expectations simply from the cult following of the original Alien film. Not to mention Ridley Scott a fanatastic director and visionary of film back to shed some light on the aspects of the film that questionably shaped his career and the Sci FI genre. So the bar is up there, and we all have heard the rhetoric by scot and lindemian about how its a stand alone film blah blah and if you know anything about film there is a bureaucracy in the industry with the studios and making money and the such....but aside from all that I truly believe that this film will reinvigorate this genre. Hopefully setting the pace for the many note fillms to come in the next five years......blade runner 2, terminator 5, star trek 2, etc...

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 2:05 PMIt's best not to compare this with Alien despite their relationship. Enjoy Prometheus for what it is (a revisit to the universe we fell in love with) and not what we want it to be.
The thrill is always in the hunt and not necessarily the reward. Nevertheless, we'll all be seeing something we've waited MANY, MANY years for. :)

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 2:05 PMFirst what are your expectations??, many times our expectations toy play with us when we get what we expected.
I do believe that from Prometheus you can:
Expect something new/fresh.
Expect state of the art special fxs.
Expect good and sharp dialogs.
Expect to be scared.
But not something like star wars at its time!
Even Avatar has some similar story topics compared to pocahontas!!!
Dont take it so serious it's only a movie!
Its up to you to turn it into a something fun or deadly desappointing.

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 2:06 PMI think you're going to be disappointed - because you've already talked yourself into it.
Other than that, I don't know how on Earth you've come these conclusions on a film you haven't seen - and I can't see how it's even possible based on the trailers I've been looking at.....but, if that's really the impression the trailers have given you, then maybe just don't go and see it?
No-one will mind too much, really - and your life will remain happy.

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 2:06 PMWe're forgetting one fact that people who were not born during the Alien fan phase are going to love prometheus or more graphical and scarier version than the old film. My birth year is 1984 and I saw alien during late 90's along with other sequels. So I understand the generation gap here because I am in the middle of two extreme generations.

Don't hit me with them negative waves so early in the morning. Think the movie will be great and it will be great. It's a mother, beautiful movie, and it's gonna be great? Why don't you dig how beautiful a forum it is in here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?
You could be right but i hope not.

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 2:20 PM@allinamberclad: you got it. Self-fulfilling prophecy. It's almost like the OP WANTs the film to fail, so s/he can say "I told you so..."...that doesn't make sense, but I'm seeing a lot of crazies coming up with these ideas lately...jeezus...

All I'm saying is have a little faith and enjoy the show this is bound to be a wild ride and I can personally guarantee you that Ridley will deliver the goods

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 2:33 PM@ Sky 120% with you on that. I was born on 76, a little earlier than 84 good year by the way and I can totally see what you mean there. Compare to the older fans and this gen. I can see that and I'am sure Ridley is quite aware of this fact and that's way Prometheus looks the way it does and yes as someone else stated here this is the Alien for this generation.

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 2:36 PMI can appreciate where this guy is coming from. I have some of my own reservations about this movie just because like many I remember being so excited when I saw the Phantom Menace trailer, finding out that Liam Neeson was a Jedi, Ewan MCgregor was young Obi Wan and of course when Darth Maul is revealed as the Sith lord I was so pumped! But I walked out of that movie like I got an F on a test that I took pride in studying for. We have to remember that Ridley Scott is putting this thing into motion and him being such a cranky old man any more he has no time for campy crap and he is very thorough with how the atmosphere and chemistry of the film will work. In other words he will make it like we are apart of the crew. Now remember Damon Lindelofs discussions on how this movie ties to Alien. He describes Prometheus as a spinoff but he has said that in SO MANY words. So just like Star Trek TNG has Voyager or Deep Space Nine. Alien has Prometheus. Which I think is cool because you will not have to see Alien to understand what is going on with Prometheus and it will movie into its own series but expand the Weyland/Yutani world and its corporate corruption. Look the writing is on the wall this movie just looks dark and gloomy and cool we know this is going to be pretty epic. I mean look at Avatar if you saw the trailer and didn't know what the outcome was well I should see if we can set this post up as a braille translation. I mean that scene where Vickers confronts that guy that she will not allow him to board the ship and then torches him. Pretty gritty!

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 2:42 PMit's going to be so funny to see 99% of viewers to be dissapointed, myself included....still, none of you people will admit it, or maybe even realise it yourselves at first....but it will dawn on you when you eventually realise

SilverX1031
MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 2:43 PMI don't think we will be let down at all. When I first saw the trailer, I knew it had to do with the Alien franchise. The look, the story, even the name of the ship gave it away. I agree with above posts that say let Prometheus be its own movie and don't judge it on what we know of the Alien Saga. It's supposed to be original and possibly set the tone for the movie that excellently stated, "In space, no one can hear you scream."

RSAND
MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 2:52 PMI really believe RS will find a way -or many- to shock the hell out of us with this new concepts and sub-plots. I believe he's keeping back a LOT despite all that has been release thus far. That's the kind of director this guy is.
Disappointing? IMHO, I think not.

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 2:55 PMA good movie is sometime like a good roller coaster ride; even if you see the structure before, It still can be a real scary ride. For me, the two most important basic elements in a movie is the storyline and acting . Also, I don't think that Ridley Scott would have done an "ordinary" science fiction movie after his sucess of Alien.

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 3:06 PM@Steadyboy,
"A good movie is sometime like a good roller coaster ride; even if you see the structure before, It still can be a real scary ride."
This is the best description I have seen of why I don´t mind spoilers. Thanks for expressing to me what I feel in so few words.
Concerning the issue of the thread: being of Alien generation _ I saw it at my 17´s when it premiered _ I still think I will be able to separate two possible sources of disappointment. One is inevitable and comes from comparing my feelings seeing "Alien" and my feelings seeing "Prometheus". When I saw Alien I was young and impressionable and now I´m seasoned and a little bit cynic. This is inavoidable and an effect of the march of time and I know that I must just get over it.
The other source could come of any feeling that the movie is bad, inappropriate or mistaken in its own basis. This could be evitable by Scott if he does a good job. So I would be much less inclined to forgive him if this is the shape of things to come.

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 3:07 PMOh, another one of THOSE posts. Can we just make a rule that any of the following types of posts are automatically locked?
1 - Prometheus is gonna be great!
2 - Prometheus is gonna suck!
3 - I can't wait to see Prometheus!
4 - Don't spoil Prometheus for me!
5 - I'm leaving until after I see Prometheus!
They are all equally useless threads, devoid of any valuable information.

I am increasingly worried that you have a point, especially as I read these posts. If most of the people on these boards have made passable observations about the plot an audience can expect, this movie is going to be a bigger convoluted mess than INCEPTION. I can only hope that Ridley Scott hasn't lost his mojo; that he won't be delivering the equivalent of a doctorate-level course in a subject that is, to this day, basically fantastic in nature.
Put more simply, I hope he's stayed true to form and kept the story deceptively simple and the characters engrossingly complex. The richest folklore and mythology isn't aimed at making the divine pedestrian...on the contrary, it makes the pedestrian divine.
Let us just pray for the best in the meantime, yes?

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 3:10 PMWe didn't fall in love with the "universe," per say; we fell in love with the Alien itself, and the idea behind it. That's why I think the writer of this column is thinking that he might end up being disappointed. If we're "in love" with one aspect of the original, then it'll be hard for some of us to adjust to a whole new aspect.

I will NOT be disappointed, unless someone here holds me down and whispers the sequence of events that unfold in the film into my ear before I actually see them.
My self-fulfilling prophecy is to enjoy the hell out of it, whatever it is.
If it is a miserable failure, I'll even find something worthwhile in that.

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 3:20 PMThis new movie will be more related to von daniken than to 'Alien'. You should read his stuff to get aquainted with where they will be going with this.

Sky
MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 3:36 PM@Svanya, I think age does matter. Ask any person born after 90's to critic alien or any old sci-fi movie. CGI expectation of 90's generation is pretty much high IMO.
