Pessimistic Preparations

MemberOvomorphMay 20, 20122310 Views42 RepliesLet me put in a little backstory to my fears. I'm 20, I saw Alien for the first time when I was 11 and fell in love. Since then I've been unable to convince people that one film has remained as my absolute favorite for so long and from such a young age. I try to describe it by saying everyone has a movie that just 'clicks' with them, and for me it was Alien.
I'm obvsiouly a huge film-buff as well and usually have no qualms about spoilers, early-reviews, over-exposing trailers until this movie came along. Prometheus is giving me anxiety. All I can think about is "oh god, what if it's awful". This started when I was with some friends who were talking about Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. The trailer looked awesome, same director, everyone was hyped and convinced it wouldn't suck, those poor people. I hold Ridley in a higher regard above Mr. Lucas to start, but the parallel is still there.
So i'm trying to prepare myself for the absolute worst case scenario. The American release is on my birthday (some cosmic hilarity I think) which isn't helping the scenario. Does anyone else share my fears? Because i'm horrifically afraid of a Phantom Menace scenario. Plus the push for a Blade Runner sequel is setting off an alarm in my brain. What if this is a cash in instead of Ridley trying to redeem a once great franchise? This is seriously making me paranoid to the extent that i'm going to have to laser off my Alien tattoo in shame and depression.
Any opinions on the matter?
(well, at least it can't be as awful as the AVP's. Right?)

Binks wasn't that bad, however the "NOOOOOOOOOO" added at the end of "Return of The Jedi" was a disgrace...

Why are we wasting our lives on a movie you, because Ridley Scott is not just your average director and the ALIEN/PROMETHEUS concept is not your run of the mill story and films.
I have a family, job, hobby, and pet. But the positive energy generated by the knowledge of this project being green lit added that extra pep in my life. It pretty felt like someone reuniting me with a good old friend.
We're just hoping our friend doesn't turn out to be a crazed, incoherent crackhead, out to rob us and leave us for dead. ijs lol =))

Go in and forget everything that you've seen to the best of your ability. Don't go with any expectations other than to have a good time.
Don't go in with a checklist of things you're expecting to see.
If you're not having fun, being scared, or engaging your mind, then the movie has failed to some degree.

I echo what others have been saying here: Let go of your expectations, let Prometheus be a blank slate, enjoy the ride, and don't overthink it.
BTW, you guys are a bunch of young'uns! I'm 34, married, with one child and another on the way. That makes it, let's see now, 23 years since I first saw Alien! (Holy cow.) While I can't say that it's my favorite movie of all time, it IS my favorite movie in the horror/sci-fi genre, which is one of my favorite genres, so there you go. I could never get very excited about Cameron's Aliens or the other sequels, so I'm thrilled that Ridley Scott has come back to offer us something new from the Alien universe.
Now would be a good time to watch the original Alien again, not just for old time's sake, but also to remind yourself that it's not perfect.

@Rosesrubella - Poison Idea had a great tune called "Getting The Fear", which tied into the Charles Manson cult mentality - but questions the same things: am I going to be let down or be a part of this?
Horrible analogy at this point, but enjoy the flick ("Prometheus") for what it is.
You can't recapture the moment of impact when something like "Alien" hits you broadside, makes an impression, and you hold everything else short of what you first experienced.
My favorite film of all time is "Throne Of Blood" by Akira Kurosawa - but I came across that long after seeing "The Lower Depths". Nothing until that point compared to "Lower".
I skipped on "Phantom" because the trailer looked amazing, but was certain the movie would fall short. I regret this, because watching it years later, I wish I would have had the experience in a theatre on it's release date the way I do now at home.
In retrospect, I actually like the movie - but I sincerely think, in this case, we have nothing to be afraid of. There's something Ridley did with this to not only make it worth his while to revisit, but worth ours to do so too.

@abiogenesis - got you beat, Chief - I am 42!
Have the same take, man - just enjoy the damn ride. We're too old for this sort of debate!
I have two sons, one daughter.
She's five.
She's going to the flick.
So much for parenting skills - learned it from the 'rents who rented "Alien" on VHS when I was 11.
Gotta pass the legacy of it, right?

To be honest, I was not happy with Ridley's Hannibal movie and loved Silence of the Lambs. He had upset me with not using Jerry Goldsmith's score in Blade Runner and Legend. BTW, I love Jerry Goldsmith scores and was saddened by his passing. He would have scored this movie lovely.
I saw Alien when I was 13 in the movies and that movie has scared me the most to this day. I remember seeing it in the movie theater at the Loew's on 86th street in New York City. I missed the Omen, Exorcist (seeing it in the movie theater) during those years and Scanners somewhat came close afterwards. Aliens was good (funny I served in the Marines from 87 to 91 and now have been in the Army since. I am in Afghanistan currently and pissed that I will miss it seeing it in the movie theater/IMAX/3D) but not the same level as Alien. The movie needed to remain on that horror level. The other films weakened the series so I am hoping for a reprieve with this and wishing that RS brings the standards back to this film. He should.

@Late,
Okay, you win! But my husband is your age and we're taking our 20 week old fetus to Prometheus, does that count for anything? (Our 4 year old's way too sensitive for anything scarier than Thomas the Tank Engine, for now.)
@colonial soldier,
Keep safe, and thank you for your service!

RS has yet to make a movie I didn't like (or even love) in some fashion.
I saw The Grey recently (RS and his brother produced) and thought that was great. There appeared to be recycled music from Sunshine/28-Days Later and some of the Gladiator themes. Still, it was a great movie.
Granted, he is playing in an established area and an Alien prequel with RS at the helm does raise the bar.
I have faith in RS to deliver the goods and have no worries about the movie, other than an Alien growing to maturity in a day or less, which was hard to swallow in the first Alien movie.

I also feel your anxiety; but @ the same time I don't feel like the trailers & articles have given away a great deal of important plot detail. There could even be alot of disinformation out there...
To my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong) RS has never been involved with a sequel / prequel / related film to any of his existing work; I can't see him shite-ing in the nest now so to speak... ;)
Happy to sit on the fence until I've seen it.

The only thing that concerns me is that we, and by that I mean all of us on the forums, have such high expectations, that the movie we would LIKE to see cannot be delivered.
I fear that we fans may be responsible for over hyping Prometheus, and therefore we can only blame ourselves if it does, but hopefully not, bomb.
Some want Xenos, some dislike the squid thing, some want Holloway to get flamed, some believe Vickers to be the second droid etc. etc. We can't all have our cake and eat it, but maybe we can all have a nibble and be left wanting more by way of a sequel.
I have to put my faith in Mr Scott that he WILL deliver a great film, with great themes and completely new ideas.
Now, let's all have a big hug, and put our differences aside for a while. XXX

Well i agree Phantom Mennace was a bit disapointing in some aspects..
Prometheus is a more serious movie, but with Lindelof on board we do not know what to expect, some of his work is pure fantastic great imagination...
But everyone has some bizare Dreams that are truely out of the box and weird and not really something you could use for inspiration in a serious movie.
I wonder if all along the Space Jockeys are just empty Andriod Suits and what is it that makes them tick........ THE SMOKE MONSTER lol...
I dont really know what to expect in this movie, but i do expect it to leave just as many unanswered questions and no explanation to certain events just as lost did.
Oh with the Star Wars EP1-3 i do wonder if we would see more simular thing going on in this movie.... imagine if Star Wars 4-6 was not made at that time.... you would be trying to piece together where the Story is going, but we knew about the story plot as we had Star Wars 4-6.
This movie is every open ended..... but we just dont know if as Star Wars EP 1-3 was a Prequel to Star Wars EP4, that indeed a Prometheus 1-3 would do the same for Alien.... from EP1 we would not know much or get answers depends how the movie ends.... but a Prometheus 2 could still answer a lot.
I think we will not see the Engineer die, maybe we see Shaws Cuddles die, maybe not. I think the biggest question mark of the movie is what is going on and happens with Shaw in the clip she is assending from the Derelict..... planting the seed maybe?

You're going to look back on these thoughts in your post after you see the film and say to yourself how or why did I think I could outthink Ridley Scott?
You won't be alone by far....all the material is being thrown in the public's face with a challenge...'Here, figure it out if you can, if you're so smart you won't have any problem..oh and by the way, I'm Ridley Scott, I've been doing this a long time. The last 2 times I did sci fi films people thought the same way you do before the film opened. They thought that way because that's what I wanted them to think, they had no choice'
Relax....Ridley won't let you ruin the film for yourself.
May 21, 2012
jockeyspace you got it! It IS just a film. There are far worse things in life than bad films unfortunately.
However, I'm still betting this will blow us away. I cannot imagine this director releasing anything less.
May 21, 2012
@abiogenesis - No, you win! The fetus card trumps my daughter's intense design on all things scary!
At least you're getting a head start, and not finding your pet "thing" lurking around the corner while watching "Ringu" - to which I was informed that she wanted to be Sadako for Halloween.
I am a terrible parent, but a wonderful father :)

NO Jar JAR= NO WAY this movie could EVER be as bad as tPM (which, without Jar Jar, and without that whiney little Anakin punk, wouldn't have been all that bad)...
