MemberOvomorphMay-22-2012 11:48 AMHi all, I tried the search function couldn't find anything on my two subjects.
Chances are this is nothing, but this is why I post it maybe hard core fans will discover some significance or provide some interesting theories. I realized the similarity of the space jockey's air hose type device and how much it resembles the tail of a face hugger and not just the the dangling sections but also where the tail connects to the face hugger and where the hose connect to the space jockey. The second similarity I noticed is that the acoustic beacon in Alien was initially interpreted to be an sos type signal, then we find out it is a warning. But we find out AFTER it is to late. Compare this to Prometheus, they find the pictograms and assume they are a star map, then an invitation. So they travel to the planet and find all the goodies, by then it is to late and all hell breaks loose. Its like the pictogram was not a invitation but a warning to stay away, just like the beacon in Alien. Any theories?

MemberOvomorphMay-22-2012 12:18 PMI believe the first topic above is just a coincidence.
The 2nd, well clearly there is some kind of misinterpretation going on and I see your point, but the "messages" in Prometheus that were documented in early human history and pre-history are probably a bit more complex in their provenance. They were created at different points across many thousands if not 10's of thousands of years and are relevant to different human cultures.
They could simply be saying "This is where the gods dwell" and nothing more.
It's also possible that the element (faction) of the Engineer culture that came to Earth in our history and communicated the information that is captured in the various "maps" found by Shaw was NOT the same element (individuals) that is currently alive on LV-246 in the film.

MemberOvomorphMay-22-2012 12:44 PMThe whole story about this movie centers around man's greed. Shaw and Holloway's so called discoveries were just a catalyst or motive for the Weyland Corp. to investigate/obtain advanced technologies. Sukkal, your right, it was not a invitation, but simply a pictogram from an ancient civilization denoting a historic event. For all we know, the Engineers may have been conducting tests on the Earth and nothing more. Which brings us to current moment; the act of greed to further the agenda of the Weyland Corp. and continue to make money for the investors. Unfortunately there is nothing spiritual about their motives. You can see their hand in almost every detail of the crew; lack of caution when investigating an alien environment, the Corp. liaison stays on the ship, the scientists blindly explore the temple instead of letting robotic probes take all the necessary readings, chart the temple, locate any life signs, and finally create a plan that does not include suicide.

MemberOvomorphMay-22-2012 12:48 PMThe fact that the starmap discovery to me is misinterpreted as an invitation displays the naivety of humans in the attempt to overreach and displays an obvious depiction of hubris.
Were as the distress signal in Alien was a deception by the company to attain their desire (being the xeno).
So imo the similarity is that both of these 'signals' both manage to cofound people but are clearly in different ways and intentions.
