earth experiment #?
MemberOvomorphMay-22-2012 4:36 PMHi All,
I understand that for the sake of good story telling, even in science fiction, the creators sometimes have to ignore facts about the complicated real world (ex. Gravity seems to be the same on every planet in the Star Wars universe).
Ridley has claimed that Prometheus is based largely on feasibility, which is exciting but I would like to question the feasibility of finding human looking aliens such as the engineers appear to be in outer space. I've always been a little bothered this notion in stories such as The Green Lantern or even Star Wars where it is taken for granted that there might be other races of humanoid beings with 2 legs, 2 arms, 5 fingers, 5 toes, 1 head, 2 eyes, etc. It makes sense from a storytelling perspective because the characters more relatable to a human audience. But from a hard science perspective I think it is unlikely at best, and actually shows a lack of imagination concerning what form(s) an extraterrestrial 'godlike' intelligence would take on.
The original 1979 Space Jockey is such a humanoid, and my hope for Prometheus is that this gets adressed in some surprising and interesting way. In other words, for the movie to be truly feasible, the characters should be really really surprised to find a giant human head on another planet...anyone else feel this way?

MemberOvomorphMay-22-2012 4:45 PMIt seems from the trailers that one of the many wtf moments the Prometheus crew has is seeing the giant humanoid face sculpture in the structure.
And if... (theoretical if) these engineers took part in creating our civilization wouldnt it seem logical that they would base our structure on them?
Dont mean to pick at the bible but it states 'God' created us in his image so it seems logical to think that the entity we consider God to look somewhat related to us humans

MemberOvomorphMay-22-2012 4:53 PMI guess you haven't really been following any of the other details about this movie then, to be asking that (obvious to answer) question, huh?

MemberOvomorphMay-22-2012 5:01 PMHolloway could very likely feel that way because he's being more critical than Shaw. He might feel that the similarities between them and us actually indicate that they are some previously unknown line of hominid that came and interbred with us, rather than being our direct creators or Gods. They both find it somewhat strange that there are some similarities between the Engineer and Neanderthal man and ponder about the sudden disappearance of Neanderthal man from the fossil record. Shaw could have a different conclusion because they're only somewhat close to an early hominid that they both know of. But Holloway thinks "God doesn't build in straight lines". Something that we humans like to do.

MemberOvomorphMay-22-2012 5:16 PMThey made us, of course we are going to look like them. Did we make androids have 5 eyes? 3 legs? 2 mouths? No. We made them look just like us. That's why we look like engineers, because they created us in their image. I don't get why people can't understand that....

MemberOvomorphMay-22-2012 5:24 PMFact:
While shooting ALIEN, Sir Ridley would use smoke machines, even for space pics. Upon being told that there is no smoke in space Sir Ridly replied: "There is now. MORE SMOKE!!!!"

MemberOvomorphMay-22-2012 5:53 PM@ MU/TH/UR 6000 I honestly don't know how it'll work out in the end. I think everyone will be so wrong. I have my reasons and my own theories. But I can tell you that I've seen some additional stuff (that they'll probably end up releasing anyway at the rate they're going!) & Holloway has a slightly different thesis about who they are in mind. Possibly even before they got there, as he starts noticing things that add to his case in the clips that have to occur really early in the movie.

MemberOvomorphMay-22-2012 7:21 PMThis is a bit off topic however, sometimes I think they make these space creatures look something like humans because some directors and artists etc. don't know when enough is enough, and you tend to end up with a wierd, comical being rather then a horrifying thing that wants to f*** you up.
& they would most likely create us to look like them etc. etc.

MemberOvomorphMay-22-2012 9:01 PMAliens have come in all forms on the big screen from slime to bugs or whatever. While I did not like "war of the Worlds" with Tom Cruise in it, the aliens in that film were the strangest ones I've ever seen that didn't scare me. Obviously, the zeno scared the living daylights out of me, and still does to this day.
I think the real reason directors choose humanoid aliens is for the sole purpose of us relating to them in one way or another. ET was meant to appeal to kids as a "teddy bear", the zeno was meant to convey fear. Maybe the sheer size of the engineers and their technology is to make them intimidating, but not scary until they become angry. It implies a deity-like presence solely in a fictional way.

MemberOvomorphMay-23-2012 2:11 AMIn a Galaxy as big as this, anything's possible. But, Physio-ergonomically, the Hominid/Humanoid form is a very efficient design relating to handling many varied tasks without being over-specialized in a given one.
I read an article a while ago to this effect, written by Phd.'s and such.
Shoulda saved it...20/20 hindsight.
Now, tie-in things like Ancient Astronaut legends and theories...the Missing Link, and such...there's a lot of stuff for R. Scott to run with.
The book 'The 12th Planet' as a single example, and Kurt Vonnegut's material.
I've been playing with ideas like this for a while--they won't 'gel' for me yet, though...so, that's also why I'm massively looking fwd to seeing this movie.
I don't want to re-write PROMETHEUS, I want to tell my own stories, but I can learn much from Sir R. Scott.
Who better??

MemberOvomorphMay-23-2012 4:35 AM2 legs and 2 arms are probably the direction in which most species are evolving toward, a lot of dinosaurs appeared to evolving this way too.
Perhaps as it's been speculated that human life may have been seeded, we are simply a variation of the space jockey/engineer race.

MemberOvomorphJun-29-2012 4:35 PMAlot of SCI-FI movies do generally go in the direction that you make a point to notice.
BUT....
The Engineers and this particular movie are based on where HUMANS came from, so if they had a 6 headed dragon looking thing in the beginning of the movie sacrifice itself, and the characters act like we share our DNA with it, now that wouldn't be as believable as a 7/8/9 or whatever foot tall albino human looking being, now would it?

MemberOvomorphJun-29-2012 5:11 PMI agree @ deftones 1986, so how do we end with a Deacon that is a cross between an 8,000 lb. sea urchin and a bleached dipped Shaquille O' Neal ?

Let me check my
