Fear & Creatures

Engineer Xeno - Chr1s
MemberOvomorphMay 22, 20121662 Views18 RepliesJust wondering on how viewpoints concerning fear and phobias apply to the creatures in both Alien and Prometheus.
For me the Facehugger represented two things - arachnaphobia and fear of suffocation (also there is the mention of the oral rape concept that was put forward by Dan O'Bannon)
The Chestburster and now the Cobrahugger to me symbolise serpents and many people have a general fear of snakes (The cobrahugger seems to fit in with the facehugger's oral scenario as well)
But ultimately the new creature we have seen (Mr. Tentacles) is just a mass of, well tentacles (from what has been revealed). So I am just wondering will this creature play on psychological fears and such or just be a big monstrous menace?

BY the way critic reviews are out and Prometheus recieved 90/100.
In comparison, Battleship recieved 52/100.
Critics are not going to give 90/100 for a killer octopus.
May 22, 2012
It speaks to my fear of crappy plot pointss created by washed up has been directors and writers who can't create a decent story arc on a bet, but that's just me.
May 22, 2012
Wow...
I'm one at 'That Time Of The Month' and you're chewing on R. Scott before the movie's even out yet.
SO...why are you here again Outlander???
May 22, 2012
I kind of agree with Outlander, from what I seen about the whole tentacle crap it doesn't feel like horror, just a huge octopus that came to be due to a species like conception( apparently holloway rapes shaw) I beg to eat my words, though it feels like a sick hentai japanese thing so far to me.
May 22, 2012
A guy in a good rubber suit, is still, just a guy in a rubber suit. Seriously, the critiques of the monster aesthetics in this movie aren't jiving with what I'm seeing. Some eyeless cobra-thing that can instantly latch onto you through a space-suit, then have its' way with you? That's not intimidating? Some kind of nematode that burrows into your eyeball, then f*cks with your DNA? That isn't insidious? A huge, very Lovecraftian creature design with weirdly semi-rigid limbs and multiple bifurcated tentacles that can whip around you like a family of anacondas? That isn't classic horror?
I'm just not seeing the problem.
What were some you folks looking for, more xenos?
May 22, 2012
I thought the question being asked was about the fears that were brought up seeing this scene.
Those are my fears.
I certainly hope they are irrational and the film is good, but there's a lot of pressure retconning something that's 30 years old.
May 22, 2012
Apologies Outlander. :) Lost the 'track' of things--spreading my brain to thin right now.
...and kinda hormonal, so again, my sincere apologies.
My fear is that for some idiot reason it'll 'tank' at the boxoffice.
Yes, I'm looking fwd to the sequel already... :D
May 22, 2012
They are few more terrifying things to me than to be immobilized by tons of tentacles and then it starts eating me. The most terrifying would be the anticipation of the first bite because you are stuck regardless of how hard you are fighting and you know pain and death are coming and you can only wait for it to start.
Safe? Of course he isn't safe, but he's good!
May 22, 2012
Honestly I didn't want another xeno hell I didn't even expect one, but I was expecting something completely new. Horny tentacles is nothing new is just something that was so cheesy that its not on film anymore, kinda like "the blob" I do admit the CobraHugger looks badass, but im not too sure about cuddles...
May 22, 2012
my lord...oh my...wow...just wow...AND NOTHING LESS. KINDA MAKES ME WANT TO ASK FOR YOU ALL TO SHOW ME THE WORK ALL OF YOU DID THAT'S ANY BETTER BUT I KNOW BETTER THAN TO DO THAT WITH YOU AT THIS POINT, BUT YOUR INTENT, ALMOST ALL OF YOU, IS SO CLEAR HERE..."LET'S KNOCK THIS FILM AND KNOCK IT'S DIRECTOR AS HARD AS WE CAN...WHO CARES IF WE HAVE SEEN THE FILM YET OR NOT WHY SHOULD THAT MATTER?" Please...do let me know when you regain your faith in him and this project and in the meantime here is some friendly information passed on with the total courage of every single possible conviction in my mind and body that this "thing"...is ALREADY A "MASTERPIECE IN THE CAN" WAITING TO BE UN LEASHED ON AN UN SUSPECTING PUBLIC... and with each little criticism you all level at it, that conviction, that this film is already a masterpiece, and that I am just going to LOVE this thing WAY MORE than any of you could comprehend and ten times more than that with each little completely unfounded insult you are all throwing at it in your "teen angst" like stupors!!! So...to that end...Here is the list of awards that the man you are all dumping on and forgone all faith in has already won for films that as far as I can tell right now, are all looking about HALF as great as this one does already!!!

Look, we havn't even seen the full monster yet. We obviously should know that there should be more of "Cuddles" to see that we havn't seen yet that will horrify us much more than we think. Maybe the tentacles do something we havn't even thought of before, like if they opened up into mouths.
May 22, 2012
They have shown two creatures out of who knows how many others. We only see 1/16 of the actual octopus which could be on it's way into something else. Too early IMO to give negative feedback.
Are you folks expecting another xeno like creature which has been done to death and likely boring to the audience. Perhaps the creatures in this movie changes into whatever the murals dictate above the pods or better yet what the individual fears the most.
I have suspicions that shaw's octopus is likely her worse fear. Why? Out of all the things in the galaxy, why they hell would an octopus develop??? If the creature is meant to mix with dna of the human host (shaw)....why an octopus and not a 2 legged, 2 armed xeno type figure.
Doesn't really make sense but at this point nothing should based on the trailers. Obviously a bunch of octopus' are not going to scare the crowd unless it is slowly transforming or praying on individual fear.
why o' why is the engineer getting pwnd by it's own creatures. Something aint right!
May 22, 2012
It's not an Octopus or a squid. Our brains go to the closest reference point and make a judgement based on available information. I did as well.....until I saw BIG CUDDLES! It has massive appendages and those two so called "tentacles" are it's tongues and it will EAT YOU ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 22, 2012
Cuddle-squid is interesting, but it's the hammerheadcobra I really want to know more about!
...and how the eye-squiggly ties in, etc..
I fear some dumb@$$ is gonna hack-up the editting and leave crucial footage on the floor.
But, then again, this IS R.Scott, so I feel pretty safe trusting him to be careful about, well...everything.
May 23, 2012
I think you'd be lucky to 'just' be eaten...
From what we've seen thus far, the critters are much nastier than just looking for soft-pink Noms in high-tech wrappers. :-)
I mean, listen to the audio 'Cut It Off'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBwGaDafwbU
...the thing is doing some nasty stuff, and then there's that bit in the commercial where it's inside his helmet and dives into his mouth.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGs3F1sFhrc
That's fear-some...it's inside your suit, and there's NO way you can interfere with it's intentions. Try clamping your mouth shut, it'd likely just break your teeth--or burn through them.
I'd rather be eaten than used as a Host for whatever, or worse, have my DNA mangled and 'lose' myself.
That snake thing...creeps me out worse than the Xenos ever did!!
Never try to pet strange alien critters boy & girls!! LoL :-D
May 23, 2012
Seems the board is pretty heated up and I hope I don't get any bashing, so here it goes. I agree with most of you here, Ridley Scott has done a lot of great movies.
I am not going to lie, I do expect a lot from Prometheus especially since I am seeing it with all my friends on my b-day and most of us are fans of the first two alien movies. But I trust Ridley will be give the best in this movie since he seems like a very demanding actor that pays extreme attention to detail.
It seems though as if fan anticipation is turning for the worst and the decision has already been cast ...
