If the population lives more than twice as long, the population will not increase by twice as much, unless the ability to reproduce is artifically ended at age 30, because people would just continue to have children. We don't desperately need another planet to live on either, though i can think of a few people i might like to send to one. "We need space cos people aren't dying. But we have no planet nearby. Economics will reduce the species eventually, if there's only so much food and people have had too many kids, they'll die. The planet will be just fine, the species will be just fine. thats how balance works. Lots of grief, but eventually people may start to think. No need for earth2 to fuck up. So we can infer other things from some scenes, they relate. For me the key is the opening scene (we are led to believe), where the Engineer somehow "seeds" by dissolving himself into something that can affect many. So, i would imagine there is some kind of mechanical aspect to this (they've been stressing the emphasis on mechanics of bio), and most mechanics can be reversd to some degree. i think Weyland had some idea all along how they did it, and has theories on how to reverse it. So i'm guessing he is coming back to earth to take out some aspect of our dna to recombine an engineer, into him in some way. i think thats the technology stolen from the Gods, not how to make a vicious killer, we already know that, nature didnt produce Dobermans, man did. We also have a fair few eugenics programs that ran for a long time. So yes, i think weyland named the ship, because that was his intent, for him to steal technology from the gods and for him to become a god, he's already created worlds, and already created the start of "beings" in the David line. I'd guess now he wants to start again. Just like God does in the old testament where the vicious little psychopath keeps murdering most of population with floods and fires. My gut feeling is he will want to be a creator rather than just a mere creation. I think he'd like to create something that will look at him in a way no human ever will. Now that you already made look like an ass, I can mention things like if Hitler had the A-Bomb back then and used it, it would be proof that intelligence and evil spirit can wipe out an entire planet. We humans always play with fire, and thats by the way what I think is Weyland all about. We were lucky often enough in the past. History says civilisations evolve, then extinct, then rise up again, then dissapear. It's my view and I say we humans will never make it to a point were we can say: Now we have a good basis, we got our shit on earth together without wars, rich vs. poor, hunger, and so on we can move on. If you find this point of view stupid, I dont care it's only what I think.

IF......THEN, can be used mathematically to justify all sorts of crap that we would laugh at when syntaxed in English, yet still be mathematically true. Hitler already had enough weapons to wipe out the rest of the world. He was doing it. It was intelligence, and maybe a huge dose of gut instinct, that made others sit up and use their intelligence to thwart it. Again, books will set you free, have a read up on Genghis Khan. probably the most brutal killer in history, as a proportion of the worlds population he murdered more than any other. spanish flu killed about 20-25million, possibly more, in a shorter space of time than hitler or genghis khan. It is intelligence that stops these deaths. What it seems like you're really saying, is an unintended consequence of intelligence is the means to kill. And there is something in that. But it goes along with the intended consequences of intelligence, namely, medicine, food production, reducing slavery and so on. Are any of these systems perfect, no, because not enough people give enough of a damn about them, we're all too cosetted and safe, and some countries only get corporation-friendly news delivered to them (according to Dan Rather, who got fired for.....delivering a news story), but just because something isn't perfect doesn't mean its inevitably flawed, and "the end is nigh". i forget the name of the paleontoligist above who made one of the best points i've ever read in one of these discussions, namely the ability to forget about evolution, and lumping dinosaurs into one category. A great post i think. Moving people to another planet would only mean we had another garden to fill with trash and ruin. To fix the problem you have to fix the root cause. And that would require intelligence. I'd recommend a read of David Bohm, he wrote and discussed for many years about the way the west thinks and the problem of 'wanting X and the unintended consequence of getting Y along with it'. It certainly makes you think.

Am not sure who you aimed this question at, but it took years to analyse human dna, many many decades ago, the same level of analysis now is done in hours or days. So it would be scientifically possible, even today, for a substance to be analysed in that timeframe. But, more time would give more analysis, so i would disagree that using techology in our future it would be jumping the shark' to suggest it could be done. Analysis is much quicker when you already know what you are looking for... it limits the wasted tests and gets straight to the heart of the matter.... question that leaves is does Weyland know more than Shaw thinks he does about all this?

@Windood My ability to explain my thought is limited because english isn't my mother tongue, nontheless what I want to express is that I am not very pleased with whats going on in the world today. I feel the progression we should make these days isn't going the right way. There's too much politics and money stuff, greed and selfishness. We lose the ability to care for others, to an extend try to put others down for a way yourself getting better and richer. I have a feeling that, as cheesy as Avatar was, it had a message that mirrors our way we live today, Cameron may be a rich bastard but he still has some thought about the world and knows what bothers people. Prometheus will also have this message that if we don't change something terrible happens. I sound like a pessimist I know, I wish I could be more optimistic.
