Consider this if you feel dismayed by Prometheus

Consider this: When people talk about the yearning for a great [or grandiose] scifi movie while talking about such movies as BLADE RUNNER, SOLARIS [the original version], SOYLANT GREEN, 1984 [though I grant it's more of a political critique than a scifi per se], PLANET OF THE APES or even LOGAN'S RUN, I trully empathise with them. When I watch recent scifi movies such as MELANCHOLIA or MOON - movies that are said to entice/arouse your intelectual side - I too feel that yearning and the subsequent dismay of witnessing nothing truly new, as probably the majority of scifi fans have concluded for themselves [by themselves]. And the reason for this dismay is quite simple: There seems to be only one movie that was [and still is] able to perplex, confuse, make you think about it's meaning, charm, hipnotise and, above all to make you wonder and yearn for more of it's kind. That movie is 2001 - A Space Odissey. Inteligent, cunning, simple yet profoundly complex, full of eye candy and revolving the 3 great questions: Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we supposed to go from here? And because it is such a great work of art [if one comes to think of it that way], it is prone to be imitated, nodded at and taken as a standard for the genre [as it has been taken] and beyond. It IS that difficult to come up with a movie such as 2001. It IS extremly difficult to break away from it and it will always be. it IS that hard to make something new. So, to the folks that leave [or have indeed left] the theatre somewhat dismayed about their intelectual cravings being satiated, think how RARE it is for someone to show an entire different and groundbreaking approach to timless and universal questioning that, at the same time, gets the viewer to be completely surrendered [to both the aesthietics as well to the rational process].

Sorry, but 2001 the movie was a bastard son of Arthur C. Clarke's masterpiece. Film as a medium for the moment have the issue of telling a story, perplexing the audience but not losing them (lowest common denominator) and still get the message across. I still find movies wanting compared to the written word. Why you ask? It the mind, and our imagination that will always be the most creative, personal, and intimate movie theater of them all.

HI, Patch: are you talking about THE SENTINEL? And i completly agree with the "inner theatre" that you talk about. Imagination IS our best trait.

I love 2001, but translating the transformation of human to a star child and not losing everyone in the process is, well a most challenging event during that movie. Hi David 1.

There are some great Sci Fi films out there, all have their weaknesses. I do try and take away the best of each of them.

Hi Frantz: yes, it is a matter of taste in the end. But overrated? seriously?

It was groundbreaking to put it bluntly. Consider the era it was made in, the available tech, and the mind set of the studio's.

This film actually seems closer to Kubrick's film than any of the Alien movies. Existential Sci-fi horror is a pretty high concept & easy to get wrong. Has anyone seen this interpretation/explanation of 2001, beautifully made in Flash http://www.kubrick2001.com/

I think the point of David 1's post is this, no movie will be perfect... just enjoy it and be thankful these quality productions are in fact being made... transformers/battleship anyone.

First of all, great post David and I have to agree with you. '2001' is a timeless masterpiece. I still consider it as great, even when disregarding it's early production year of 1968, for me it still holds up and fascinates me to this very day. It has unanswered questions, but I like that kind of movie, that leaves room for your own imagination, that keeps your mind busy far beyond watching. It is also a brave piece of film making due to its incredibly lenghty sections, but I personally think the movie needs that. It is a piece of art just as well as a movie, at least to me. Also, one can feel how well Kubrick and Clarke actually worked together... As for 'Melancholia', I'm a huge fan, I love every bit of that movie, especially this new(ish) approach of that very subtle reference to the Sci-Fi genre. Apart from that I think it looks stunning and Dunst's and Gainsbourg's performances are great. In this context I'd like to mention 'Another Earth' which I found equally fascinating, although very similar to 'Melancholia'. To me '2001' is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made, if not THE best, and I'd be surprised if anything will ever come much closer to it than 'ALIEN' and 'Blade Runner'. It is my unbreakable golden triangle of the genre. As for Prometheus, my expectations are not THAT high, I don't expect it to be in that league. But I'm sure I'll like it a lot, which is good enough for me. But obviously I'll only be able to tell for sure in a few days... EDIT: Got kicked out while writing and had forgotten to copy before submitting, so I needed to rewrite. Just saying, as I realise now quite a few things been said inbetween by others. Can the 'idle' time before auto-log out be increased... BH?

^what HAL said, I completely agree. There is no need to finish a story when it is best left to interpretation!

Well said, David. Setting the bar too high a priori is only unfair towards Prometheus. None of the mentioned movies were highly anticipated as the next groundbreaking masterpiece, they just happened to be recognized as such afterwards. Doing it for Prometheus could only damage it, rather than support it. And that's why, although very hopeful, I have always been "cautious" (some have said negative), I won't be dismayed because of excessive unfair expectations. (I have high expectations, but I kept the unfair bit out)
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born. Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.
