WHY? WHY? WHY?

My points being:
1. Why are they urns and not eggs?
- If the spaceship is indeed set for earth then why do they need urns? They could have stocked up on facehugger eggs that appeared in the original film, at the very least seemed, designed to fit a human being and would have fitted better with the story.
2. Why did you have to go for the Teen Xeno Jockey ending?
- The Xeno that comes out of the space jockey at the end was just simply god awful! There should have been something more Giger-esque. It looked like a teenage mutant xeno-Jaws with it's shark finned head. A xeno always comes out as a baby and GROWS! Not as a full-grown teenager! Also the DNA of the Engineers and Humans are the same so why did the Xeno have to be different and not just a bigger more bad-assed version of the same?
3. Why did you turn your back on horrror?
- You had some interesting scenes but there was no forceful grotesque bloody deaths. Not that I'm a sadist but we needed that edge of the infliction of blind fury on the victims to really make us squeal. Although I did like the Xenocobra.
4. Why did you not go for the direct prequel?
- This film could have worked so well as a direct prequel and opened it up to a spin-off sequel. It was possible! The fans wanted it so why didn't you give it? If it's a prequel newcomers would not have minded because they would not have needed to have seen the original Alien to enjoy this film and could have seen it afterwards.
I really hope that a copy of Spaihts' script surfaces soon so that we can see what he originally had in mind because to be honest I believe that a lot of the departure from the original is all due to Lindelof.

I am yet to see the movie, and I don't mind spoilers at all, they just fire me up more to be honest.
I think Ridley said at one point that the Xeno is just far too predictable, he wanted to create a new world with a new story. Lindelof even said that, if given the chance the sequel would be even more tangental than this one.
I think it is a solid idea as when you look at the sequels, the reason they have received such mixed criticism is because when you try to change or evolve an idea that has already been done, you have a far, far harder task of making it worthwhile and interesting, without being stupid.
The scariest or most intriguing monsters/villains/characters are the new, unknown ones.
People fear unpredictability. Aliens are predictable.
I would like to see Spaihts' script visualised though!

Couldn't agree more, the ending was just wrong, I will refer to it as the bieber Xeno. I don't really want a sequel this, the only way it can go is kinda avatar which has already been done

I have not seen the movie nor would see it in a theater since I return to the states in December. But your number 4 comment was always in the back of my mind after reading so much information that it was diverting from the original story.
You are right. The majority of fans wanted a direct prequel and Ripley should not listened to that absurd idea of the writer of Lost but he sold him for whatever reason.
In my view; he simply made a movie that was at the same level of the later entries in the series. I went to IMDB and the majority of posting negative remarks. When some write something negative; I might say ahhh but when the majority say about the same thing; then that is not a good sign.

I posted about my exposure/thoughts, albeit limited, to DL here. Do you think that's the problem? He's good at creating questions/mystery, but doesn't ever have the answers himself (which is really the difficult thing to do when writing... providing intriguing/entertaining/thought-provoking/etc. answers)?

1) if you rememeber david said there were other ships, so whats to say that there wasnt a rescue mission to lv-223 by weyalnd later on and that led to the crash of the derelict with eggs in it rather than the one with urns in it.
also the xeno/eggs might not even be created yet as we only see the proto-alien possibly queen alien at the end of promotheus, so the engineers might've gone back or that proto-alien mayve sought refuge in the derelict and set up as a queen laying eggs.
but if that is the case then where is the engineer from the 1st film?
Which leads to the conlcusion that the crashed ship we see in alien and aliens isnt the same as in promortheus.
maybe this will be answered in prometheus 2 or prometheuses
2) i think the reason it looks like it does is because it is the first of its kind and it may evolve again after that.
personally i think that this film works because it isnt a direct prequel, and did what the original sequels shouldve done and look at the alien/creators etc rather than following ripley around for a few 100 years.
i think this will eventually lead into the 1st film, but mayber after a trilogy....

Assuming the proto alien is a xenomorph? May be, but until you see it molt into a praetorian or turn a host into an egg that's not a safe thing to assume.
Near as I can tell, Ridley wanted to something different, thinking that, since we were already intimately familiar with the xenomorph life-cycle, it wasn't scary anymore (well, actually, it was never scary, but that's a different issue altogether), and he needed to make up a new monster to throw the audience for a loop.
A solid plan, I thought, especially when it got out that Giger was involved. And from what I'm hearing this new guy seems pretty weird.
But, um, as for the other stuff? I agree it seems sort of pointless to use all the same elements but just... not be the same ship/jockey/whatever from Alien and looks like kind of a waste. But then again, is he not allowed to tell a different story on a different world?
I mean, look at Varan. There was nothing about that movie that required it to be about a new monster. The plot was the same as Godzilla, no genuinely new ground was tread, it just so happened that even though it was a kaiju attacking a Tokyo, it wasn't the SAME monster or the SAME part of Tokyo. But hey, the result is a mediocre Honda kaiju flick that looks really pretty but is otherwise unremarkable...
oh, I see what you're getting at. :/

1. Why are they urns and not eggs?
- because if there are eggs you must have a queen ....
2. Why did you have to go for the Teen Xeno Jockey ending?
- yes i agree on that ..the alien kid was a bit lame
3. Why did you turn your back on horrror?
- i dont agree its not a matter of gore ..was never a matter of that in the alien movies ( except kane ) however the movie is not built well to scare .... The shaw self operation is much more gore than EVERYTHING we saw in the last 4 alien movies from Kane's death .
4. Why did you not go for the direct prequel?
- The parts that link to alien ( weyland , protoalien , facehugger ) are the less good parts of the movie ...so .....better in this way

@ JonesyJr - First of all, I really appreciated your post. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Why? Because I tried telling others why I feared Lindelof's involvement, and why I was worried that the tie-in to Alien would be bogus and forced. And now, here we have it. Every time I tried to speak up, people would berate me and tell me I was stupid for wanting more of a direct prequel, or that I was dumb for expecting too much out of a film. I'm glad now that after seeing this, I can now say that I was right. Plus, I appreciate your honesty, and the fact that you're willing to call it how it is, instead of praising it so mindlessly just because it was directed by RS.

@Frantz Eggs can be created by adult xenos from hosts. Kane's Son does so with Dallas and... some other guy. Also, xeno can pretty much do whatever they want. There's no rule saying we've already seen absolutely every single way an egg can be created.
Also, "last four alien movies" includes Resurrection. That's the one where the newborn gets sucked out of a tiny hole. That's the high water mark for gore. If prometheus beats that, I will be legitimately impressed.

There's no way I'm going to buy the Teenager Xeno-Jaws. It makes no sense whatsoever. The film should have happened like this:
1. The original Engineer should have mixed his DNA with apes on earth. The reason why I say apes is because It would make more sense as it would have explained our genetic relation to apes but also our superior yet limited intelligence and use of brain capacity. It also highlights the issue of the creation never being as great as the creator, for example, the Engineer's creation is physically and intellectually inferior and the human's creation, David, is emotionally inferior. Also the fact that humans are the descendant of the engineers only would help explain their lack of involvement with the other creatures on Earth and their mixing of their DNA and Ape DNA. This would also give the Engineers a Scientific and Experimental quality but also highlight that there's something greater out there in the universe, i.e. nature itself creating animals such as Apes (Darwin Rocks!). The way he does the mixing I'll leave to your imagination, although it does brings up some questions about whether there are any female engineers.
2. Keep the Urns. Fair enough. I can see that this is a new and interesting idea BUT I would find a way to fit an arc into the story that would say that the engineers infected themselves to create a Proto-Queen Alien to lay eggs which were then stocked up for the purpose of destroying their human creations (maybe on other planets). The fact that there was a Xeno-mural shows that they had some knowledge of The Beast and how it could be created. Therefore the Xeno was NOT an accident.
3. Change the Xeno-Jockey. Go back to the original life-cycle and show it burst out as a baby and not as a frigging teenager! The Xeno needs to be a bigger badder version of the Xeno because the Engineer is a bigger badder version of human beings. There should be a stronger visual link. Show some respect for your story Ridley, take some time.
I would have liked to have seen the Prometheus chase the ship and force it to crash on LV 426, which would have explained why it took so long for the Nostromo to accidentally find it, but there are so many plot holes which we can't fix with a re-shoot. But hey, these are some of the changes I would make.
June 01, 2012
they didnt use eggs because the Alien as we know it hasnt evolved yet ,i think this is set on a different planet as its not lv426 but lv422 and theres no space jockey at the controls with a chestburster hole in him.the alien at the end will evolve into the Alien we all love and that will hopefully happen in the next film, and yes this is a prequel to Alien with a bit more thrown in.I thought the film was ok but it needs a sequel .
June 01, 2012
we don't know if it has or hasn't evolved like that. Maybe the xeno on LV426 is the results of them purging another society with the goo. The differences in DNA caused the xeno to morph into what we see and it was carrying the weapon home when shit broke lose.
Again we don;t know. I know questions and plot holes piss everyone off, I kinda love them. I hate lost but in scifi everything on a plate is bullshit. and boring. I wanna be left with more questions then answers.

@JonesyJr,
Here's my 2 cents in order with your questions:
#1 - in the film you see the Urns emitting biological fluid - who's to say it doesn't transform the Urns into Eggs over a long course of time? This is biology we can't fathom and therefore, anything is possible.
Another approach could be that the Alien born of the Engineer grows to produce those eggs, and in Prometheus 2 - the Engineers return to capture this Alien and it's offspring and load up a Derelict ship with them to send to Earth - as a way to say to the humans "You mess with us, we mess with you" kind of deal. I can see it, for sure. This of course will all be present in my enormous review...
#2 - I thought the ending was classic. A much more gruesome death than that of the "Chestburster". This Alien reminded me a lot of the Alien 3 birthing process - but again this is the earliest stage of the ALIEN we have ever seen. This is Alien + Human + Engineer = New Alien. 3 breeds which should have never come into contact and thus created a biological anomaly. The ending was great in the sense that it keeps the mystery alive and leaves us with so much to talk about and debate on as we wait for the sequel!
#3 - I wouldn't say RS turned his back on horror at all! We don't need over use of blood and guts to make it horrific. The idea that the proto-worm-hugger was able to break Rafe Spall's arm and then slide into his suit and inject itself into his mouth - THAT is truly horrific.
#4 - Personally I'm glad it wasn't a direct prequel. What room would that leave for any expansion of the franchise?! I am very glad they left so much open to discuss. Prometheus has very well left us with an opportunity to extend the franchise in to at least one, if not two follow-up sequels!

Chaps, something I thought I'd throw into the mix. What is to say that the proto xeno at the end of the movie has anything to do with or be the creation of the xeno?
There is a mural on the wall in the temple of one already, they make these things. The lv426 derelict could have got there 2000 years ago, it could be related to the engineer running in the holo.
I havent seen the movie yet so I apologise if I'm way off base but I had to mention that.

I JUST SAW IT, my theory and maybe the right though
1. Beginning is showing how life began on earth
2. The black goo is a biological weapon created by the engineers to wipe out mankind as it saw its flaws and threat
3. When fassbender put the droplet in the guy he went through the stage 1 of evolution of the alien, so he became that weird physocitic crazy thing. THEN when he has sex the genes pass onto the woman where she has that squid alien. The squid alien evolves extremley quickly and injects its genetics into the engineer. The genetics have passed through 3 stages and the alien at the end has the genes for producing babies
4. The end alien i think is pivetal it has that strange jaw that the queen had..seeing as she has the birth genes and is technically baby queen so she can produce the eggs..
???
