after watching the movie and sitting discussing it with friends and on here
i have to ask you which film does prometheus share more dna avp or alien
the avp arguement goes a little like this
prometheus is basically the same plot as avp sacralidge to some of you who like the movie but here me out
in avp as in prometheus a discovery is made as to the origins of the human race and a group of scientists and mercanaries set off on an expedition to uncover the history of our creation and upon the discovery of our creators all hell breaks loose which could lead to the distruction of earth
whats everyones take on this idea is prometheus more avp than alien or am i just goin crazy?

While I haven't seen Prometheus yet, admittedly, I will say this.....AVP stripped the unused and lost pyramid elements from O'Bannon's original script, much to his dismay, and combined them with a commercial mash-up of franchises that had prior existed only in the world of comics as a fan epic of two movie monsters coming together almost too naturally...the Alien being an obvious prey for the Predator....AVP is about the alien versus the predator...and that's all it is....Prometheus is about who we are and where we may have come from...NOW, let me elaborate...Prometheus also strips those same lost pymarid elements and applies them, but with the intent of approaching that concept of origin and being something new in the process...granted, it apparently leaves a lot unanswered and I cannot yet comment on whether I believe that works or not, but what I can say is that, for what it's worth, Prometheus is ABOUT being new for the ALIEN franchise, AVP was the same old eggy/facehuggery/chestburstie/drone kills everything it sees...AND WE'VE SEEN THAT ALL TOO MANY TIMES NOW.......like it or lump it Prometheus is what is, different and I hope that means better.

I can't wait to see this movie so I can start reading everybody's posts again. It's killing me not to click that link.

@craigamore I would advise a little holding back a little on the judgement until you've actually seen the film. You may feel a wee bit silly looking over this in a week's time. It is[i/] better than AVP, obviously, but different or new? Well, I guess it's all in store!

@mr pest Cheers! I got home at 3.30 in the morning and just had to hammer it out. Had to pinpoint why I felt so underwhelmed by the whole show

Yes, that is what I tried to explain also. lots of stuff that wasn't brought to screen in Alien has been brought in Prometheus. I always felt AVP tried using these unused ideas but didn't quite work out with all the hokey acting in AVP.
I can think a few films that start with a group of people discovering "something" and then all hell breaking loose. This happens in Jurassic Park, ALIEN, the Abyss, The Thing. Searching for man-kinds beginnings or some sort of past is what drives many stories.

I know exactly how mate been on here today trying to make sense of it all .i know avp is technically a inferior film but it didn't leave me feeling cheated the way Prometheus did I've come to the conclussion I'm going to watch it again this weekend in a quiet corner of the cinema on my own and try and take my need for a good alien movie out of the equation

Hooperman...If you had read what I posted CLOSELY...THEN YOU WOULD HAVE NOTICED THAT I SAID AS MUCH.....I was simply making a comment based on what I know, NOT JUDGING AS THOUGH I HAD SEEN IT......yeesh.....read carefully people.....

AVP is not about a discovery concerning the origins of humankind, it is about a discovery of the first civilisation - humans already existed WAY before the predators came along and taught them society and civility.
Prometheus is about a discovery concerning our origins, the means of our origins being linked to that of the Alien/Xenomorph.
Ancient structures relating to extratrrestial races is the only common link - as in Stargate, 2001 and countless B movies from yesteryear.

Alright, dude, no worries. It's just safer to reserve it till you've seen all the cards in the deck. Mr pest, you're right. AVP was a cheeky film but it didn't desecrate anything..because it was obviously camp and silly you can almost let it off. Prometheus is a much more self-important event. It's not the similarities that let it down, like I say in my blog they're pretty inconsequential once all the chips are down. It's that it marketed itself using the Alien 1979 trailer music, told us it was going to be a creepy, body-horror but with an epic twist and ultimately, is a different kind of film. It fails to meet its own expectations, not ours.

@Snorkelbottom the similarities between the two go further than plot. No film can have monopoly on an idea. But what's striking is how similarly they are pulled off. An ageing corporate boss called Weyland assembles a disparate group of experts to follow up on an archaeological discovery that spans multiple cultures worldwide that could explain our origins. You can see from the trailer that the breifing happens in the ships hanger, just like the briefing in AVP, as they head toward their respective points of interest. There are more similarities including certain bits of dialogue but I don't want to spoil suffice it to say I'm 100% sure Ridley Scott never saw AVP.
The similarities don't ruin anything but they have to be noted.

I also see Prometheus as a story about our God wanting to destroy us and it leaves us wondering why. I like the idea actually. God thinking of us as nothing more than an experiment is actually an idea I think is very real.
AVP had more to do with (my opinion here) ancient civilizations having contact with an alien race. These civilizations are in awe of the Predators but the AVP film makes no mention of Predators being man-kinds creators. So that is on of the main differences I see in the two stories. Maybe when I see the film I'll see more but I have a feeling I'll see the unused elements of ALIEN than similarities with AVP

@SaintsSinphony If that's the interpretation I can get of the movie I would be delighted because an allegory like that would be really thought provoking. Without watching the movie, I predicted that in one of my threads that unfortunately is not up anymore. That idea may offend several religion denominations, you know... and it's better not to delve too deep into them, at least on this forum :-)

AVP vs Prometheus...
1. LV-223 has multiple temples, AVP has one
2. LV-223 is about the "weapon" created by the engineers and the engineers themselves, AVP is about predators hunting aliens to prove their manhood.
3. LV-223 is about our who made us and why, AVP is about the preadtors teaching us to build pyramids and using us for their hunt
4. LV-223 is a planetoid nearly 40 light years away from Earth, AVP is set in Antarctica, Earth.
5. LV-223 were are the victims of the engineers "weapons" and the engineers themselves, AVP we are merely the tools used in an elaborate hunt.

@Arkadine
NO NO NO I do not want to delve into a religious talk. LOL yes it's better not to delve into them on this forum, I totally agree.
The thought of us being an experiment is what I take from the story thus far. I hope it transfers to film and not just in theory.

I bet Ridley saw Avp....no one has that much will power. It is like saying you dont read Facebook entries about yourself, or Madonna saying she does not read reviews aboit herself. He would watch it late at night, alone in bed just to see how bad he guessed it was. Anyone would want to see where there creation had gone.
