PROMETHEUS' DETRACTORS

who either hated the film, or were severely disappointed
with the overall end result
i ask you this:
perhaps you may recall, when you were a child, you had been hoping
/ wanting / waiting for a certain special toy you had hoped to get for
either your birthday or holiday gift - - -
and NO OTHER gift would do..
you open it up, and were just really not impressed with it,
you played with, examined it, showed it to your friends,
but initially - - it just was awful, a true let down
so, you put it away. let a few months pass, then decided to
(for the hell of it) to play with it again, give it another try,
and over time, you grew to love it. and then you wondered
why you ever hated it so much in the first place..?
perhaps my "toy" analogy isn't the best way to get my point across
but i am wondering if (possibly) PROMETHEUS will become a
better film as time passes on, and not be a film that seemed to have
disappointed you
i myself have not seen the film yet,
so a "spoiler free" response is greatly appreciated
thanx

bah I dont know...it's weaknesses are too great for it to ever become a classic
After 15 years will AVP:R become a classic? no..same thing here I think
I think it would benefit HUGELY from a recut, some stuff really needs to go, and some needs to be added to close plotholes

It is not a good film because, well, it isn't. End of. It is just a film. There is nothing cerebral in there to let it age well with time. Sorry.

I agree with you Shardy, thanks for posting this positive message!

I think it's definitely a possibility, it all depends on what people did not like about the movie. From all the reviews I've read through it does not seem like anyone found the movie to be boring so that is a good sign, all things considered. Many people even said they wanted the film to be longer, and, from what I know of truly bad movies, you want them to be over as soon as possible. I have not seen the movie yet so I cannot say with certainty if it simply failed to live up to the massive hype or is actually a bad movie like some are saying.

I know it's silly but let me make a wish: I wish that Ridley Scott were aware of the negative reaction of a considerable part of the audience that have already watched the movie in Europe, and releases a re-cut version of Prometheus in America :-)

You maybe right there is a chance that this movie will grow on me and I hope it will but 1st impressions are usually right a lot of people think I'm a knob at 1st glance and they're right most of the time
I just feel the movie could've have been so much more an epic sci fi movie for this generation
I wanted something iconic something similar to alien that answered the questions that were asked in 79 like this movie set out to be but lost its way
I am seeing Prometheus again over the coming days at quiet screening without the wife with me this time I hope it can grow on me I really do or the toys are going out the pram
I will look forward to reading your thoughts on the movie over the coming week I hope you aren't as disappointed as I was

I haven't seen the movie either, but I'd be upset if I opened up ANY toy only to find pieces missing and/or broken.
In that sense, your toy analogy still works.

I'd be interested to know from the people who didn't care for it if they would feel the same way if the Alien movies didn't exist for arguements sake.

All the nitpicking and self-important ego-filled whining reeks of Aspergers' Syndrome. Yeah, it was a great movie, not perfect, I was expecting more from some elements but the net result was good.
waaaaaaaaaaaaaah but they didn't explain why a leaf moved the other way in LOST and there wuz no "xenos" or preds SHIT MOVIE SHIT MOVIE AAAA starwarsprequelslucasridleyscottlindelofdieFAPFAPFAP Shut up and deal with it.

Cinefan
Yes would definetly think of it differently in my mind i had built this up into Ridleys return to the genre he created and expected an epic iconic movie which Prometheus definely had the potential to be
If alien hadn't existed I dare say I would have liked Prometheus a lot more than I did but a world without alien what a sad place that would be

For me, I was 18 when I saw Alien. I thought it was incredible, awe-inspiring, thought-provoking, etc. I didn't have internet, cell phone, or even cable TV at the time. There's no way that I'm going to see this movie with the expectation of that same WOW factor.
BUT...For this film to garner the amount of positive, professional critic praise it has thus far, means to me..."I'm gonna love it".

I'm a huge Alien fan and have been on these boards for a while. From day one i have been telling people that prometheus is not an Alien prequel and thoses that expect Prometheus to end with Alien will be disappointed. With that in mind I went to see the movie with open eyes.
Prometheus sucks because it's poor movie, it sucks worse because it's set in the alien universe. If you haven't seen the movie then don't judge me. If you have seen it and liked it good for you.
I have nothing positive to say about Prometheus other than it had a few good moments. Most of it was 2 hours of disjointed plot holes that went nowhere. By the time the film finished I was happy to leave.

Do you think it's possible that you were "spoiled" (web) to the point where you went into the theatre with too many preconceived notions about the film? I have read some reviews that were not 100% satisfied, but none were 100% dissatisfied. I'm sorry it didn't live up to your expectations. I'm hoping for a much more positive experience.

I seem to remember the same thing happened when Blade Runner was released, the audience hated it because it required them to think, plus it wasn't action packed enough, like Rambo (bleugh!) nor did it show a happy future. I thought the film was excellant much the same as I do this movie and thinks that modern society today sets the bar too high on expectations. we've become spoilt having seen or experienced every type of plot twist, special effect, monster or genre.
my point is that had this film been released not now or thirty years ago when films were suffering the same critical abuse for a lack of understanding of new ideas but at some point midway between 1982 and 2012 the audiences reviews would possibly be one of awe instead of mockery. whatever happened to just suspending belief and enjoying the movie

The States won't receive a re-cut...
But, if this theatrical release was "tampered with" there may be a different cut on some future blu-ray, etc.
I'm definitely getting the feeling (not having seen the film yet) that there are basically 4 types of people/attitudes showing up here and throwing in their 2¢:
1) I was expecting to love it, and I did.
2) I wanted to love it, but it's "just OK."
3) I wanted to love it, but it's not fantastic, so I'm angry. So I *hate* it.
4) I (secretly) wanted it to fail and it's not perfect, so I'm loving bashing it.
Of course, I'm generalizing.
I'm *likely* (but certainly not guaranteed) to fall into category 1 or 2 above after seeing it. That's just how I am.
Professional (detached) reviewers have said that it's not perfect. I'm relatively confident that it's not perfect. But, I'm hopeful that there are things in it that I will find intriguing that they didn't pick up on. I'm also patient. I've essentially been waiting for the prequel to the prequel all along. My interest is in the culture of the Engineers. That backstory is there whether it's elucidated in this film or not. I can take it that that might not come for several years.
This film just has to get the next one green-lighted.
Welcome to Hollywood.
Endure/enjoy the show. It's up to you.
