On Disappointment and Anger

Lately there has been a great deal of expressed disappointment and anger on the boards. I thought reading a little bit about what some people are experiencing might help us to understand other forum members and maybe even ourselves. From Psychology Today Magazine: by Mary C. Lamia, Ph.D. "Disappointment is a profound way in which sadness is experienced. People seem to do whatever they can to avoid recognizing that they are disappointed and will twist their thinking every which way to not recognize a true disappointment. You may be disappointed in a parent, your child, your spouse, a lover, an employer or job, an event, or in yourself. In any case, disappointment is the experience of sadness involving unfulfilled hopes or expectations. When you consider what might have been, in contrast to what exists in the present, you may experience disappointment. In my psychotherapy practice I have found that people avoid disappointment far more than many other emotional experiences. Disappointment comes with finality--the recognition that you don't have, didn't get, or will never achieve whatever it is that you wanted. You might experience being angry with a parent, spouse, relative, employer, or friend, and that is far easier to feel than your disappointment in the relationship. Disappointment forces you to admit that you did not get what you wished to have, and it is actually easier for you to protest with anger than it is to encounter your sadness about the course of events. In an obstinate way, anger will allow you to continue idealizing what could have been while consciously denigrating it, and you will hang onto it only because it's what you needed at the time. Disappointment accepts reality There is one more aspect of the sadness triggered with disappointment that is worthy of mention. Usually it is assumed that people who value happiness are able to hold on to positive feelings and may be resilient, if not immune, to the negative effects of disappointing experiences. But this may not always be the case, according to the findings of a recent study. Under certain circumstances, valuing happiness may be self-defeating and result in disappointment, depending upon how people evaluate their progress toward that goal (Mauss, Tamir, Anderson, & Savino, 2011). The researchers found that valuing happiness can set people up for disappointment, especially if they compare themselves to an ideal. So perhaps the way in which to foster resilience is to construct realistic appraisals of what you need, avoid idealizing what could be, and come to terms with what you have."

Great and well needed post. Like I have said a few times; Tensions are VERY high and people are acting out of character. I think people are in shock and the sh*tty behavior by some is a reaction to their disapointment. Hopefully it will calm down soon. :/

Yeah Svanya I think so too. I think a very big part of the problem is that half the forum has seen the film and come to terms what it is and the other half is still hoping against hope that it turns out to be everything we wanted.

It is also scary that some of the reviews are so negative, they make it seem like the movie is no better than the 2005 movie adaptation of Doom. Which I am hoping is not the case. Only five more days till I find out for sure though!

It's a joke that they've staggered the release like this.
"Is it dead this time?" "I dunno, poke it with this stick and see."

Drake even if you are disappointed 1st time round watch it again it does grow on you after the initial shock has subsided And comparing it to doom JESUS no film can be that bad And cyphers right with all the access we have to information now ALL major releases should get a universal release date

I was going to comment on my feelings about this "split-viewing" situation we have here> Firstly, I really wish that the ENTIRE world had been all able to see it on 6/1. If that had happened, I don't think we would be seeing such high emotions on not just THIS forum, but all the others as well. Before this movie came out, there were a lot of well intention-ed: "I'm not going to ruin the movie for my dear friends across the pond." The movie is shown on 6/1..... "This movie is bloody _________!!!! Let me spoil everything for you guys across the pond so that you can be as miserable as I am!" I admit that if the situation was reversed, it would have been no different. In the OT, what resounded to me was: "Disappointment forces you to admit that you did not get what you wished to have, and it is actually easier for you to protest with anger than it is to encounter your sadness about the course of events." I have the task of moving threads and determining whether or not spoilers are contained within (not all, but the brunt of the load). Nobody from across the pond stepped forward for this task, thus it fell on me (someone who has yet to see the movie (because I live in the US), but was born and raised in England). If after all THAT, I can stay positive and upbeat about seeing the movie, then I think everyone that has yet to see it should be hopeful as well. All I ask is that for the next 4 days, we try to hold back our anger until we have ALL gotten a chance to see it. 4 days? Is that too much to ask, brothers? I hope that in 4-5 days time, we can all come back to the "campfire of brotherhood" and leave our anger in the "parking-lot". -abordoli (staff)

I have not seen the movie yet and am trying to remain as positive as I can, despite having had the the plot/story was spoiled for me as well because of my moderating duties. I think people forget about that too, when they attack staff... :/

Yes, you Svanya have to actually read every post in every thread where all I do is skim for spoilers and the general mood ("like" or "dislike") of the poster. I feel for you.

@Abordoli, I cannot do a good job if I don't read everything. That is why I am pretty bummed out when people accuse us of being evil when we do and sacrifice so much to keep this forum a decent and welcoming place for those same people to be on. :( I think I have been pretty good natured about the whole having the entire movie I was so excited to see ruined...

@ mr pest; I would NEVER want to make regular posters/members feel guilty in ANY way about the spoilers! You have nothing to apologize for, you did nothing wrong. I am referring to the people who call us names and hate on us for doing our duty here while not even bothering to realize most of us have not even seen the movie yet because we are in the US, Canada and Australia.

The thought hadn't even occurred to me that the mods have to read everything and move things around having not seen the movie So I apologise to you guys for posting anything that may have spoiled the movie for you

I was disappointed by the film. I came here to find some answers, discussion, camaraderie and way to make sense of it all. So far, among some great theories and debate, I feel the great majority of tension has been fostered by people who haven't seen the film and who are desperately defending the film. I was on here for an hour or so before I was shouted down by a staff member in all caps when he misread my sentiment. You guys need to understand we were exactly like you before we'd seen it. This was my one big hope of the summer. I've been following this film since Ridley expressed interest in like 2008. I've been following this through two relationships, two countries and five separate houses. This is one reason I'm disappointed. The second is that I'm a film student, but you don't need to be a film student to see bad dialogue. I'm not hating on anybody but I just don't appreciate being told I got the film wrong by people who haven't seen it or that I didn't understand the concepts. It's ridiculous.

@Hooperman; (and anyone else) IF any staffmember here disrespects you, yells or in any way upsets you please e-mail BugHunter about it. No one should feel bullied on a forum. You have a right to be heard and with respect. This place is meant for the exchange of ideas not insults. Please, again, mail BugHunter about anything you feel is unfair here.

I was just new and it wasn't bullying or anything it was just an overreaction but one I've seen a few times from people yet to see the film. Not worth reporting but just ratched the tension up a notch. Peeps need to chill and understand that negative reviews of a film they haven't seen aren't personal attacks and that the film might not work on its own legs regardless of its pedigree or its content. Deep breaths, stay positive and wait to counter-attack until you've actually watched the movie. Thomask is a great example of how not be a respectable voice of dissent. I's not the Phantom Menace but it's not even Alien 3

@thomask i kind of like having the reviews in a positive and negative review, I jump back and forth and it's interesting, for me, to see the parallel. yes, disappointment really is a downer, no this isn't the Phantom Menace but people here are taking Prometheus just as serious because this universe is our universe in a way. We as alien(s) fans are totally psyched and it is a blow to the ego when you look forward to something and it doesn't deliver. I think I'm laid back and I really try to get along with whomever but I've even gotten baited by this tension. Me and Drakeequation had a hell of a conversation/arguement the other day, and I actually think he sees the whole Prometheus experience in the same light I do, atleast I from my perspective we do but things had gotten high strung here and it went someplace I wish it hadn't and I apologize for it getting so harsh. I think the staggered releases are a joke too, Cypher. Yes some of the general public may not care but lots of fans like us here got screwed, I have a total different feeling between before it got released and now and I haven't even seen the film yet, so damn. I hope and I have faith we will continue and after the smoke clears we will all be getting along like we did 6 months ago. Drakeequation, I like your post, very good topic for what is going on.

Thomask Having started I few negative threads myself hear me out A lot of the threads that contain negativity change very quickly from friendly discussion to people arguing about the movie to people slating each other on a personal level with a few innocent members caught in the cross fire and then moving on to other threads to carry on their vendetta I can only speculate but maybe that's why there is a liked disliked boards in an attempt to curb everyone's aggression towards each other And to take it out on other staff just isn't on

@thomask; mr pest is partly right, but also it was done to help the staff who haven't seen the movie yet to not have it spoiled... You see, almost none of the staff (who are all volunteers) have even seen it yet (as we are in the U.S, Canada and Australia) and in the process of making this place nice for everyone many of us have gotten the whole movie spoiled. When we finally see the movie in 3 days the threads will be meshed again. Thanks for being so gracious and understanding about the whole thing...
