With all the religious stuff being thrown around it made me think... From the concept art a figure feeds the black goo to an Engineer. The figure looks different too. Could it be that engineers are to some higher power as Angels are to God? He uses them to create life and they have no free will. Then the engineers in the movie could be "fallen angels" hell bent on destroying to get back at "God". They weaponized the black goo to make there own servants?
