Was Vickers presence really necessary

Yeah, I know she looked really nice and there was the similarity between her (the daughter) and David "[as close to a son as [Peter Weyland] would ever have." But forgive me, I see no real purpose for her even being in the film. I mean she really accomplished very little and outside of showing us the necessity of learning to run to the right or left to avoid dangerous situations, she really added nothing to the story - that I could see. Killing her off seems rather melodramatic. Please enlighten me, tell me what she brought to the film that I obviously missed.

Its so hilarious reading the dissing comments lol. Chewing on what is necesary or idiotic in the script. ITS FUCKING THERE because its telling a story, everything is intentional. One has to go see this movie more times so understand and appreciate. Especially if one's brain is more geared toward Michael Bay movies. ;)

Well Without Vickers they wouldn't have her room. And in her room was the emergency procedure pod, so without that Shaw couldn't have gotten the C-Section. So Yes I think Vickers appearance is necessary.

I love Vickers this character not just because her relationship of weyland, but because her attitude towards the entire project expedition, she just more like a fierce leader to take care everything.........not even letting infected or sick person on board the ship like holloway being infected from the goo, and she just killed holoway in front of every crew of the ship...

She wasn't just T&A. She help flesh out the God complex that Weyland has. She's also that part of any sci fi horror audience that says "well, I wouldn't even get off the damned ship". Cos, she doesn't set foot on that planet until she gets out of her escape pod. Her stupid panicked run is exactly that. She's been wound up tight the whole movie, (apart from, we can assume her time with Janek). Control issues with her Dad. People ignoring her (shaw and Holloway being put 'in charge' Weyland mentioning his 'almost' son in the briefing, but not acknowledging his daughter... and her instructions being ignored -Janek doesn't attend the briefing... Shaw and Holloway bring back an alien head despite her -touch nothing' orders. and the crew- amazingly - still are casually letting fifield in, after vickers demonstrated on Holloway how seriously she takes the notion of quarantine. Shaw and vickers wouldn't work - the whole "you used a flamethrower on my boyfriend" would probably cause some 'friction" She can be more understanding of David's role. He's a robot, a slave to Weyland's orders.

I see Vickers as a pivotal character, pity that she was not really developed any further. But even as she is now, she has already earned her spot in the history of cinematography. If we put the revelation that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father on one end of the climactic revelations scale, her relationship with Weyland is at the opposite end, a true anti-climactic masterpiece. The amount of f**k not given about it is of cosmic proportions and well worth remembering.
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born. Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

But she really does hate how he treats her. Do you notice that he NEVER once says that they are related or in anyway acknowledges her as his offspring (and thus heir to the throne he refuses to leave)? In that context, saying it to him had some meaning.

@Hadley's Hope Pff - what?! The, "Charlie" question is exactly why it would work! By this stage, Shaw would have to accept Vickers was right. Vickers might yet still feel she had some obligation to atone. Shaw might yet have resentment...there's 20 issues that fall out of it.... @JP's thought would have probably elevated end of this film into something special and certainly would have been better than what we got - Vickers could yet still have died if the [stupid] story required it..........in terms of creative yet practical suggestion, I think I'd rather have @JP as my co-writer, than you. @NoXWord There is something in what you say.

I liked both of them but also if she fell at the right spot (slightly off center to the outer edge) then when the craft pitched forward she would have been exposed again... or ground up >_<. Otherwise if it was soft ground and her helmet stayed intact she would have quite a while to squirm out in full adrenal mode. She'd have to fight the alien in the lifeboat perhaps, but it could still support life... Plus, if you look at the website there are colonies semi-close ot the landing zone and the lifeboat has 2 years worth of supplies... Just sayin! Vickers was not a flat character, there was just not enough time. David was more flat, but then that was actually the point... so credit to the actor of being... 'soft wood'. Don't read into that.
