Thoughts after 2nd viewing, artbook, and overall theme

Saw it for the second time last night and also picked up the artbook... I think some points of the plot that we are all debating are more concrete than I originally thought..The opening is the seeding of planet earth, and the the black goo is housed on the ship with the intent to return to Earth and either wipe us out completely or evolve us into something else--either way the Engineers have turned on us. A few things I picked up on: I believe Holloway is not looking at the Engineers in as religious a view as Sahw but rather scientific--while Shaw is the one with the more reverential view...which also explains Holloway's intense disapointment--he want to see something concrete--like a live engineer. He is only perked up at the info about the concrete DNA match. As David asks him--how far is he willing to go to see these scintific origins--all the way.... I believe ther is more to the captain then appears at first glance...Why does he lie to the folkslost in the pyramid about the feed going out while he is clearly looking out? Why does he give a sort of wink after telling them they have to stay there overnight? What does David tell Weyland is premature when communicating with him? I am not sure ...maybe he woke up premature as there is no "cure" yet? Originally I found the film sort of nihiistic--there is no God--there are these superior beings who have turned on us--but after a second viewing I am getting a different message--I really think the theme of the film is that there is no point in focusing so much on WHY ARE WE HERE? and WHERE DO WE COME FROM? as much as we should be focusing on how to help our fellow man in the here and now..Who are the real heroes here? Those who deal with the practical at hand issues---The captain and his men who sacrifice themselves to save mankind, Holloway sacrificing himself not to spread something to the ship, perhaps even the engineer at the beginning sacrificing himself to develop life....What happens when we look past the here and now and fellow man--we pursue goals that lead to destruction..which connects with ridley's statements about the ills of religion. Shaw's deterination at the end to keep going is not a positive trait, rather a failure to see the truth--it does not matter why we were put here--it matters that we do the best we can with our time, and as David says--why the engineers turned on us is irrelevent... Sorry for rambling, but this damn film is stuck in my head :)

This film is a true masterpiece, that, like a fine wine, will only get better with age. Dud films come and go, and are good for a weekend out, and then are quickly forgotten. True ART, lasts, persists, in the collective conscious and the memory, as we try and answer its' questions. Sometimes, the questions are silly, and only apply to the movie at hand. Yet, SOMETIMES, RARELY, a film comes along that is so profound, that it has us questioning our own environment, and even our own belief systems...thus, a masterpiece. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a spoonfed individual, who doesn't like to think on their own, someone who thinks they need the "Cliff's Notes" for great Novels, instead of relishing every word in War and Peace or "The Grapes of Wrath". I feel sorry for those individuals.

I like it! I like it a lot. Great ramble! :) Also, COMPLETELY agreed with otto. This film really is like art in the way it keeps us all talking about it.

People keep talking about it simply because they really want(ed) to like it. After all, they've waited 30 years for it and they don't want to wait another 30 years for a similar experience. So, they'd rather question themselves than the movie. The problem is that the Prometheus plot isn't like a fine French wine, but more like a fine Swiss cheese. It's full of holes! Yes, the plot makes you think because it's simply too incoherent to make sense on its one. But, does it reward thinking? Not really... In order to makes sense of unsensible and outright stupid events, the plot forces intelligent viewers to create their own subplots which R. Scott and D. Lindelof were too lazy to flesh out themselves and we're then expected to admire our own imaginary subplots instead of the lazy and sloppy writing that is Prometheus...

@ReluctantReviewer - i agree as well. everyone wants to love it/like it, but to me the stupidity of the crew, inconsistencies with their personalities, and the holey (holy) plot are too big to overlook and give the stamp of "masterpiece" or "art"!!! i must've been at a different theater than a lot of these folks!!!

Ya know what's REALLY REALLY getting on my nerves? Well, it's people like Reluctant who, although they profess to not like Prometheus, keep coming back to tell us how much it "sucked" in their opinion. You know what, brother? There's LOTS of things that I think suck...but I don't waste time posting on websites talking about how much I think they suck! And we have a negative review thread here. Why hijack a thread that was created by those of us who DID enjoy the film and want to discuss it's story points? Get a life.

@PrivateHudson maybe you should have taken your own advice and just moved on to another thread...

@PrvivateHudson Very, VERY wise words. @RR (not bothering to write full name) It's ok to have your own opinion, but don't LOOK DOWN UPON OTHERS OPINIONS AND THINK YOU MR RIGHT. That just makes you an a**hole

@ReluctantReviewer Precisely. @PrivateHudson Your hurt feelings won't improve the film, one bit. @Mr.Yutani ReluctantReviewer didn't, "look down on others"? Not once. So...

Drake, Had this thread been created for negative reviews -- which it wasn't -- then I would not be in this thread and I've avoided the negative reviews thread like the plague because I'm really tired of all the whining. I'm not one who thinks Prometheus is a PERFECT film, but come on...it's not Star Trek V quality. LOL!!! My problem is as Mr. Yutani says above...sure, have your opinion of the film but why do people with negative opinions have to keep interjecting in threads like this that have nothing to do with criticizing the film. If some of us like it and want to discuss the nuances and intricacies of the film, we should be able to do so without someone popping in saying "You what? Who cares? The movie is like swiss cheese...it sucked....etc." Art is subjective. Just because YOU don't like something doesn't necessarily make it "bad". Sorry you and others were disappointed in the film...if so, forget about it and go prepare yourself for The Amazing Spiderman or some ilk like that....lol!!!

Yutani, couldn't agree more with this statement: "It's ok to have your own opinion, but don't LOOK DOWN UPON OTHERS OPINIONS AND THINK YOU MR RIGHT. That just makes you an a**hole" On that basis, the OPs statement that- "Anyone who thinks otherwise is a spoonfed individual, who doesn't like to think on their own, someone who thinks they need the "Cliff's Notes" for great Novels, instead of relishing every word in War and Peace or "The Grapes of Wrath". I feel sorry for those individuals". ...mean that Otto is also a condescending asshole. Just sayin.

I happen to like Swiss Cheese. I also like onions and this film seems to have a lot of layers. Has anyone here read Zeus' take on things about the passage from Leviticus? It's a great example of yet another layer I had not appreciated. Spoiler ahead... Did Shaw really have the C section on Dec. 25? Is the date confirmed somewhere in the film?

@PrivateHudson I would counter what you said with, art is subjective, just because you like it does not mean it is GOOD. Also you claim that we should respect the opinions of others but then in the same post insult people who did not like the movie by assuming that we are only capable of appreciating derivative Hollywood drivel like Spiderman.

As the OP--I ask let's not turn this into a sensless argument---if you did not like it but wnat to discuss why adn issues with the plot-great--if you did like it and want to discuss--great too--but it sucks/it's great/it sucks on and on is not fun or interesting... Back on track-- it is also clear to me that the engineers were wiped out bys ome form of xeno--in the deadpile it is pointed out that there are many bursted chests...

Drake, No, my point is...Prometheus is BETTER than that crap so we should celebrate that fact. When ambitious films are made, I think we should support them and not pick them apart. There are no perfect films...well, maybe Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back (to me)... But again, my point is because Hollywood DOES churn out drivel like Spiderman, we should be grateful for films like Prometheus...

Marcx. I tend to think the Engineers were victims of some type of Xeno...or even the Hammerpedes (since those enter the body as well)...it's hard to say. Hopefully, we'll know more in the sequel.

Well the hammerpedes would enter the body--the engineers I believe were exploded out...There is also no indication that ahmmerpeded existed prior to the goo leaking in the chamber and altering the worms therein.. As for the question about christmas--well we know it is christmas when they come out of stasis--CAptaibn says so--and it does seem as though they come out of stasis and go to the planet in the same day.... Virgin birth on christmas, the crucifed mural of the xeno, etc...

@ marcx - I so agree with everything you have said here. Finally someone who looks at this film for what it really is - work of art. I am not one who likes to be spoon-fed at movies. A great movie requires you to use you brain and have to think about what you just viewed on the screen. The big problem here is we have become so desensitized because of the constant spoon-feeding from the movies. I have viewed this movie 3 times now and yes I have questions but that does not take away from this great movie. I want questions when I am done. Great movie let’s hope we get a sequel soon. On the note of engineers and their demise - Looking at the big head room there was a wall or door by that pedestal and crystal. The mural on that door we all agree looked like a Queen Alien. Thoughts - crystal somehow either opens or releases the door and behind it is a queen evolved or created by the engineers through experiments. part of their weapons experiments(assuming that is a weapons factory). Maybe her produced eggs/facehuggers is what infected the engineers. Why they were running - that’s also the question. See this is what I like about this movie - so many possibilities.
