What made this movie be rated R?

I don't get why it was rated R? Was it all a marketing ploy to get people to think "Prometheus" is scarier then it really is? I've seen tons of movies that had more blood/gore that were not rated R. IMO they tried to con Alien fans into thinking it was going to be more suspensful and scary then it was. Something like the original Alien or Aliens but in reality it resembled more a PG rated Star Trek film.

It's only rated M in Australia, which is about right. R is way waaaay over rated.

I read a review as to why RS wanted to be rated R, Knowing him though, there might possibly be a Directors Cut since he likes to prepare himself if the ratings did ever change. At the same time I glad its rated R, if it was PG-13 it would ruin it for me, since all of the other films were R. Plus, if it was PG-13, we wouldnt see Shaw in the medical chamber pod getting the bodyhugger removed from her stomach - I should say if it was PG-13, we would just see less of it, just a small sample of it.

Basically what influenced say is, that the R rating is correct, or else some scenes couldn't get in

my guess its, due to the Shaw's c-section scene, the opening of her abdominal area is what i'd say got the "R" rating and possibly David's decapitation via the Engineer as well

good question..I tend to agree with Shardy, although it was a clean incision (?) could it be the gore in the Deacon birth scene? Milburn's arm getting broken... harsh language ;) certainly not a hard R, although I demand one for the Blu ;)

imho all films should be rated PP for pre-pubescent or A for adult: if you ain't got hair on your upper lip, if you aren't having your period, there's just certain things you shouldn't be watching. Is such a PP or A classification relevant or should we just UNCENSOR EVERYTHING for everyone? Then what? Will it have an effect or not? Isn't it just 'evolution' where we create a world of hardened hardcore hammerheads who'll dip their ever-mutating forehead into any bio-suit for entertainment? Than what? Will it matter? Personally, I've been watching the most grotesque insane horror/splatter/sci-fi films since I was a kid and I don't have a collection of murderskulls in my shed. I just don't. I think THOSE SORTS OF PEOPLE would have a collection of such trophies even if they'd been brought up on re-runs of Paddington Bear or Sesame Street. Oh..

It could have been closer to R rated if they eleborated a bit more on the infected rock loving geologist when he rocks up at the ship and he's all kind of bent over himself, I was disappointed in that bit. I was thinking I was about to see some disgusting unfolding of a body, when all I saw was a pan to the guy turning around saying HEY MAN come have a look at this, and then the infected guy is on his feet, bleh could have been so much better.

Rated "G" should stand for "Perverse Sexual Content A La H. R. Giger". Or Just "G" for... "This movie is Rated "Giger"" LOL.

There is rarely a KNT movie here (is +16) (and never porn in the normal theaters, so +18 doesn't matter) and to be honest, i've never seen small kids going to "mature" movies, either they are small and don't go by themselves to the theaters, so parents watch with them what's appropriate for them, or when they are big enough to go alone with friends, they manage for themselves

@LordSoth you got that right. they missed a golden opportunity for some real weirdness there. They should've taken their time unfolding Fifield.

There's a lot of blatant visceral death in this movie even if not a lot of blood. One of the main characters gets sprayed with a flamethrower. And it gets worse. Not faceless stormtroopers or robots getting shot with imaginary blasters. Also, the face rape scenes alone could have given it an R rating. They probably could have gone a lot farther than they did with the R rating.

R = adult themes/content. even with the sometimes brutal editing on some death scenes, this had oodles of both - the Engineer-bonding at the end, especially, but also things like the arm-breaker and the warped motivations of David (which'll just get a wtf from most kids' minds/mouths) right? :)

the C-section scene had quite a similar impact like the chestburster scene from ALIEN even I knew that squiddles will be taken out. It was much better than the boring C-section scene from ALIEN:Resurrection. Also the mutated Fifield smashed his former crew member to death with much blood.
