My interpretation. To me this filmed seemed like it was proving a point by forcing the viewer to interpret the film. The interpretation yielded by the viewer could then be used as evidence of the point being made. I thought that there were two main interpretations to the film. 1) We have a deeper meaning in the universe. The religious symbolism had some actual meaning. The space engineers were the creators of the human race. 2) Our meaning in the universe is trivial and explainable. The xenomorphs are the creators of the engineers. A sole engineer decided he was god or saw past his gods and planted human life on earth. The engineer in the beginning of the film was not the Prometheus engineer but an engineer doing his job as created by the xenomorphs on an unknown planet. All of the main points in the film can either be interpreted or taken at face value. Depending on how one interprets the events in the movie, either using only what you can see or using our innate need to ask why, the film will have a different meaning. I think the point was to show how far we have NOT come in human thinking. We still hold dear to the ideas that beyond all logic and reason are otherwise false. Exmple #1 interpreting who made us and why we are here. 1) We were made by some mysterious race of beings, may be engineers, for some special purpose. We are the center of the universe. A faceless killing machine like the aliens are nothing more that some sort of tool made by us or our creators. There is purpose outside the simple biological means of survival. 2) The engineers were created by the xenomorphs. This makes sense as they are biologically far superior to the engineers. In a Darwinian race they would outperform us in spreading their genetic material. The goal of the xenomorphs is to survive and spread their DNA around the universe (Darwinian). The xenomorphs created the engineers to terraform planets and prepare them for the xenomorphs. The fragile, less intelligent engineers were kept in check by a belief system of gods and meaning (biologically programmed). One day a prometheus engineer didn’t sacrifice himself on earth but instead stayed to live because he didn’t accept the religious ideas forced on him. He created a colony of people who lived not under the direct control of the xenomorphs. This explains why all peoples of the world have illogical belief systems to explain irrelevant meaning (Just stating an interpretation of the movie, I’m not saying one interpretation is better than the other). I think all aspects of the movie can be explained either way. What do you think? Please try to poke holes or add how parts of the movie follow these interpretations. I will respond to questions as quickly as I can.

I think it's to allow the ship to dock with the 'hive' /bunker and people can disembark without passing through the poisonous atmosphere. Not for the Space Jockey's though. The one that came after Shaw wasn't wearing a suit. Exactly. The atmosphere inside is being manufactured and is probably as clean as Earth prior to the Industrial Revolution. Exactly what humans would have been used to during the times of the cave drawings. You notice that nobody ever suggests, that some humans might have been taken here on any of these visits. Perhaps if they didn't die stupidly our two skeptics Milburn and Fifield might have pointed out that possibility, esp as an explanation for Space jockeys having human genome. And if they were brought here, they would have seen 3D holograms of the local stars.

Eddie, Eddie, Eddie PLEASE we do not consider anything but the original Alien, none of the others relate to Prometheus! We know very little about it, there's not enough time to figure out it's level of intelligence. One thing I did notice was that it seemed to be 'interested' in Lambert. Although 'off screen' her death was different from the male crew members. It sounds as if she is being raped by the Alien. When Ripley arrives on the scene we see Lamberts naked legs swinging back & forth, meaning she was stripped!

Fantastic again, Ridley Scott in his book Prometheus managed to revitalize, summarize some aspects of the human condition in "Alien, the 8th Passenger" and "Blade Runner, the Hunter Androids." Aesthetically and technically the special effects, the film's music is undoubtedly extraordinary and follow the standard quality of current films, ie, clean as a means of transmitting ideas, once again, that for some it is possible to leave the theater with some visual satisfaction. However, the merit of the film lies in the use of rituals and symbols deeply related to the anthropological structures of the human imagination, among them, rape, impregnation, viscosity, address, woman, cup, pot, egg, boat the intimate, possess, penetrate, confuse, the copulative, preservation, and other cave. It appears, in the opening scenes of the film, "ENGINEERS" are portrayed as a ultramachos, his muscles defined, which reproduce without the need of women through the ingestion of substances dissolved in viscous glass containing water, so that after his body falling into some turbulent is dissolved and through cell division, fertilizing, violating the planet earth, emerging, so the Christian myth of Creationism, as well as Prometheus, and especially of women as responsible for receiving and perpetuation of species. Thus, this scene introduces the physical context of an ethical and even drop a drop of psychopathology: in some apocryphal apocalypses fall is confused with "possession" by evil. The fall becomes, then, a symbol of the sin of fornication, envy, anger, idolatry and murder. And the film Prometheus, this moralizing takes place in a fund temporal infusion and ingestion of slime by ENGINEER, moments before his sacrifice. The Forbidden Fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil preached by the Christian tradition for centuries, in the film, is substituted by a glass containing water and a viscous liquid, so the First Engineer, thus assuming the role of Adam simultaneously and Prometheus. The comparative method shows that the role of thief is played by the immortal humanity, once again, that for ENGINEERS immortality lies in the use of Bio-Technology. However, in May the mystery of the film are the causes and motives which misled the First Engineer in exchange for immortality gained by the fall of Biotechnology and mortality of primordial man. In many traditions, adds to this first result catamórfico another consequence of the antagonistic human aspirations and inducing cause (as in the Jewish context), a sexual interpretation of the fall. Coming thus to a feminization of original sin that comes to converge with the misogyny that constellation of dark water and the blood let on. The woman, who was defiled by menstrual blood, becomes responsible for original sin. In this context, women in the film appear as protagonists and saviors of mankind, in the figure of Elizabeth wedded to his crucifix and then Ripley. Novo!
Ok, I saw the movie again and came out with a completely refined view of my previous ideas. 1) The two true believers were stupid. 2) The rest of the crew knew why they were there (to get weapon) 3) The other two scientists were not scientists just plants to help illusion 4) The aliens were just weapons created by the corporation 5) daughter wanted control of company and dad wouldn't let go 6) the engineers were not trying to destroy earth they were just a creation of the corporation
Dirac, that is not at all in the movie I saw. Shaw and Holloway were looking for the meaning of life. Weyland wanted to be immortal. Vickers wanted her father's empire. The rest were there for fortune and adventure. The Prometheus crew did not come looking for to claim or test a weapon. Interpretation is one thing, but you've got a totally different story there.

It has been a long, long time since I last saw ALIEN but you description of Lambert's demise has triggered a shiver down my spine - a creepy, shadowy remembrance of that Friday night in November long ago. :o Still though, that included, the creature seemed to be acting on instinct with no sign of sentience. it stalked it's prey. It killed. If it was prone to witty barbs and one liners , I might think otherwise. ;)

In fact there were two visits in the past 2000 years, and they may well have been from the 'home world' or a different outpost, or actually from the other domes on LV 223 (we never find out if they are permanently abandoned, or simply out on other missions on other planets.)
