Prometheus and 2001 references

Ok good folks, you'll have to help me out in this one, since I only saw the movie once and I'm unable to remember every fine detail of it. But as far as I can tell there are a bunch of nodds to 2001 - a Space Odyssey; some blatant some not so much so. Nodds [without any particular order]: 1 - David 8 as both HAL and David Bowman 2 - The red hanging Space Suit inside Prometheus 3 - The hanging space suits all aligned in Prometheus [not like Alien] 4 - 2001 quotes: Prometheus Computer to David 8 - "good morning David" Shaw - What are you doing, David? as HAL -"What are you doing Dave?" [THANKS TO HADLEY'S HOPE] David -I’m attempting to open the door. as Dave to HAL - "Open the pod bay door HAL." [THANKS TO HADLEY'S HOPE] David - "I'm sorry but I can't do that" as HAL - "I'm sorry Dave, but I can't do that" 5 - Creator and Created Being dualism [Engineers/Monolith vs Humans vs Robot] this is the most evident one [url=http://www.prometheus-movie.com/community/forums/topic/7904]more extensively here[/url] 6 - David 8's exercising 7 - Classic Music use. 8 - Vickers Room [for aesthetic purposes] 9 - An indirect approach to the Crew on Prometheus being in Cryo before getting inside the ship [how else would they not know each other?] just like the Scientific crew in the DIscovery 10 - David 8 eating while watching a vid [much like David Bowman and Frank Pool did] 11 - the scenes of barren terrain being filmed by fly over. [THANKS TO SHAWLUV] 12 - old Weyland in the weelchair as old David Bowman [THANKS TO MR. YUTANI] 13 - The natural Monolith Old Man of Storr, on the Isle of Skye [THANKS TO HADLEY'S HOPE] 14 - The Evolution Scene in the beginning as a short take for 2001's Dawn of Man [THANKS TO HADLEY'S HOPE] Feel free to add anything you remember. Not to cause thread drift, but other Kubrick movies may be appearing. The pool table/Christmas tree/drinks - from Eyes Wide Shut. The captain riding the bomb - from Stangelove. The Private Pyle-smile on the biologist's face when he's playing with wormy - from Full Metal Jacket. :-) There's got to be many more.

When he opens the door to the chamber and Shaw's asking what is he doing.. Shaw - What are you doing, David? HAL -"What are you doing Dave?" David -I’m attempting to open the door. Dave to HAL - "Open the pod bay door HAL."

Patch: Thanks dear friend. And yes... it's somewhat sad that instead of trying to make something new, peeps seem to try the great flicks's formula and repruduce them to exhaustion.

it's an ACTUAL monolith called the Old Man of Storr, on the Isle of Skye. [img]http://i1139.photobucket.com/albums/n549/smarty9000/prometheus2/OldManOfStorr1.jpg[/img] In the film it was positioned at the start of the scene that introduces Shaw and Holloway. because of the way the disc ship (for no given reason) went 'nose up', to depart, and the angle that they filmed this at, they made similar silhouettes on the screen, subconciously enticing us to make a connection between one scene and the next. And of course the whole evolution reference.

Hadley: Sweet. I missed that one completely And you are quite right as to the subconscious connections. Kubrik made a ton of them in every movie of his [2001 and The Shining specialy]. Thanks dude. Nicely spoted.

My pleasure. It jumped out at me first time, esp as they had the sun peeking around the side of it. Made me smile at first viewing, but I should have twigged it was the first sign he was going to take us on a trollercoaster of plot twists.

I think there's some good stuff here. I also think that there is some reaching, but that's my opinion. You can create parallels with a lot of things, it doesn't mean that was the intention. Just my $0.02.

I don't think it's much of a reach when he puts in a monolith and parallels lines from 2001. He was a big fan of Kubrick, and this film is littered with little references for the nerds to find. Blade Runner and Frankenstein as well as lines mimicked from Aliens "David, we are LEAVING".

Syphonox: Indeed, as Hadley's said, Sir Ridley is a Kubrik fan [you can see how much of a fan via his fims: Alien + Blade Runner + Prometheus ---- [b]Kubrik's 2001[/b]. The Duelists ------ [b]Kubrik's Barry Lindon[/b]] and he him self stated that. He also made that Prometheus being "2001 on steroids" comment/remark.
