MemberOvomorphJun-24-2012 8:36 AMOK so I got to watch it for the second time yesterday, and gave it the "let's look for the less obvious stuff missed first time" treatment.
Amongst others, I really worked out what bugged me the first time about the music.
The film has a theme tune.
The one at the start, is then repeated when they find the ampules, Janek gives Shaw the "protetcting humanity" talk, and in other spots.
It sounds like a a rift on Indiana Jones, and defies the demeanour of the movie for me. It's all "Yay, hope, discovery, aspiration for the moment" and totally unnecessary to those moments in the film
Anyone else pick up on it?

MemberOvomorphJun-24-2012 8:47 AMI certainly noticed that from the start. It was like an annoying kid brother constantly distracting me from paying attention to the film. A lot of the time the music didn't fit. Overall I liked the movie. But even I must admit that there were some moments that didn't flow well and a lot of that seemed to stem from the music not setting the right tone.
The trailer music did a much better job of setting the tone than the actual soundtrack did.

Yep, noticed that, thought it was not at all sufficient for a sci-fi "horror" movie that was supposed to "scare the shit out of" me

MemberOvomorphJun-24-2012 10:03 AMIt's my one unforgivable. The sentiment it tries to convey IMO comes off as insincer or tacky or just plain ol' silly and over used. Third time was a charm though, I could forgive everything else.. except that }%^* pseudostartreky score.. like I say, I'm learning to be OK with the film (and this is a lot like being raised w/ abusive parents, you excepted it for what it was and move on, but it's never, never really right).

MemberOvomorphJun-24-2012 10:48 AMMusic is very important for the movie expirience to me.
It has been perfect in Alien and even in Aliens, also in Terminator the Music fits perfect to the story.
But here in prometheus this is to me somekind of "Startreck-we-are-family-hopefull"-music-emotion that i dont like at all.
May be fine for some "startreck-fan-film", but not to an Alien movie.
I miss some significant hopeless melody, when i see Aliens again, the music at the beginning makes my blood freeze and my heart goes boom-boom.
Just a little simple melody, but its a masterpiece in writing.
When prometheus starts, i only think "..is there another beer in the kitchen..".

MemberOvomorphJun-24-2012 11:04 AMI do agree with the opening scene music ("Life" on the OST) was a bit trekky and 'go where we have not gone before' esque. However, I suppose it does evoke grandeur, try and look at it as ironic, that something sounding positive is in fact ominous to what is to come. The very end of the track "Life" does go from being kind of trekky and descends into a tone of tragedy in the last few seconds.
Regardless, the engineer theme was cool and I also like the prometheus theme ("A Planet" and "Collision") they were pretty cool and I really liked them. They evoked mystery but grand scale orchestral styling. Dont forget Prometheus isnt Alien or Aliens, Prometheus was on a bigger scale and more dramatic in terms of consequence and subject matter, so in some way the music present fits.
Its awkward for Prometheus becuase people wouldnt judge it so much if they werent constantly giving it a referential comparative to alien. If the film had nothing to do with alien whatsoever it would be judged more on its merits as independant, instead its getting by many people the sequel-ish treatment review rather than independant film.

MemberOvomorphJun-24-2012 2:36 PMI actually love the music. If you ask me the music is trying to tell you that this is much more than what is usually dealt with in sci-fi/horror films. That we're dealing with something much bigger. Our creation and creators to be exact. If it was just music you would expect from a sci-fi/horror film it just wouldn't be the same. It's hard to explain. I loved that about the recurring theme.

MemberOvomorphJun-24-2012 2:58 PMI loved the music, Scott is doing something different this time, he's making his own trilogy. Theme music is necessary for this kind of project.

MemberOvomorphJun-24-2012 3:13 PMCertainly noticed the annoying theme tune on both my first and second viewing. It sounds Steven Spielberg-ish, and has like a naive 80´s sci fi feel to it. To me it punctured every inch of depth and seriousness.

MemberOvomorphJun-24-2012 3:47 PMI like the soundtrack... not nearly as much as some soundtracks. I'm not sure I'll play it to death like some... but it's growing on me.
What I like about it is the purity and innocence of one theme, the ominous tone of another, the coldness of another.
When I listen to the track "Earth" (and the others that have the same theme) I actually picture Elizabeth Shaw and her glowing excitement.
I've only listened to it all the way through maybe twice.
Does anyone know what the actual order of tracks are? It doesn't seem like it plays in the order of the movie... but I might be wrong.

MemberOvomorphJul-10-2012 2:17 PMI'm relieved that I'm not the only one on this. I thought it was me that was too hard, to nitpick a theme music. That theme was so annoying, too cheerful for an Alien movie.
Apart from that, the soundtrack was good. I just wished they would've spaced the music more, you know? To have more slow and silent moment like in the first one.
Also, why an alien movie for Teen (13+) ?? It should've been for Adult(18+) !
I bet it's because of this we have this "anti-creepy" theme music.

AdminPraetorianJul-10-2012 7:51 PMThe music was my biggest problem with the movie, it sounded like an episode of Star Trek.

MemberOvomorphJul-10-2012 7:56 PMreminded me of DS9 and Captain Janeway lol, but I still liked it and thought unfair of me not to just cause of something like that, it wasn't the music's fault...lol..

MemberOvomorphJul-10-2012 7:57 PMI agree with Smokingspoon. The "discovery" theme was jarringly cornball for an "Alien" movie.

MemberOvomorphJul-10-2012 11:40 PMThe music really grew on me on the second hearing. It has grandeur and majesty. I like it.

MemberOvomorphJul-10-2012 11:46 PM I did not notice the music while viewing the movie,,,but the visuals far outweighed the music in my limited attention skills.
The music was not a distraction...
Perhaps the next viewing......
