'Prometheus': 'Alien's' Sigourney Weaver 'really looking forward' to it

Sigourney Weaver fully intends to see "Prometheus" ... as soon as she has the time.
It's an appropriate ambition for the actress who got her big break in the new sci-fi movie's 1979 forerunner, the classic thriller "Alien," which also was directed by Ridley Scott.
Weaver currently is in front of the cameras nearly every day, playing a former first lady turned secretary of state (no, not that one) in "Political Animals," a USA miniseries premiering Sunday, July 15. But once her schedule allows, "Prometheus" it is for her.
"I barely realized that it had opened," Weaver admits to Zap2it. "I saw a picture in the newspaper, and I can't wait to see it. I just e-mailed Ridley about a month ago, wishing him and the whole cast well on it. I love Noomi Rapace -- I think she's awesome -- but I don't actually think I'll be able to see it until July, when I finish this."
Rapace's character in "Prometheus," which just scored a $50 million opening weekend in North America, basically is the surrogate for Weaver's Ripley in the "Alien" series. Weaver confirms "it is, it is" gratifying that her astronaut alter ego remains so iconic after three decades-plus and four films.
"I have to give Ridley all the credit for that," she maintains. "He took what was a fantastic story, with such great elements, and directed it with such a sure hand. He was a young man then, and he made it to be so honest and real, he changed the way we think about outer space completely.
"He had such a fresh eye, and the result was so scary," Weaver adds. "Because of the composition of that, I''m really looking forward to this."

AdminPraetorianJul-03-2012 3:41 PMI really did think they looked the same, esp. with Noomi's hair all sweaty and curly she reminded me of Sigourney. Also, when Noomi escapes the SJ ship and is on her belly and lifts her leg up out of the way it was exactly like when Ripley escaped the Queen and closed the hatch at the end of Aliens.

MemberOvomorphJul-03-2012 3:51 PMI wonder why he choose noomi out of all the options. Not a bad choice but just speculating on his speculation which is another thread on speculation IMO.
Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security.

I saw somewhere that what turned Scott on to Rapace was, 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' - in particular, the manner in which she handled her....."difficult", scenes.
I understand that what he had in mind was what he intended to put the actress through in the med-pod sequence.
I would imagine that, once he'd seen her in that film - and just about anything else Rapace has ever done on top of it - he'd have had few doubts that she could emotionally handle and effectively communicate what he planned to use her for.
As for the actual topic: I personally don't think they actually look very similar - I'd say they do share similar qualities, which I'm not sure is quite the same thing: they seem, to me, to both be very strong featured with an attractiveness that is not delicate - while it is feminine, it is robust.

Co-AdminMemberOvomorphJul-03-2012 6:15 PMIMO, there is a bit of similarity between the both of them, but I know Ridley had Noomi in mind for Prometheus when he saw Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
As for Sigourney, I think she is a good sport and will support RS with what he chooses.

Ravager, The Alien Queen
MemberOvomorphJul-04-2012 10:14 AMbut they both have: curly, short hair - strong personalities - and as Svanya said up top: when SJ was chasing her, and the protohugger got it, the way noomi is on her belly and lifts her leg up out of the way it was exactly like when Ripley escaped the Queen and closed the hatch at the end of Aliens. and, plus, they are now calling her ''the new ripley''

MemberOvomorphJul-04-2012 11:43 AMHe obviously liked her for her acting and he was smart enough to know that she's gonna be a pretty big star. Two things that would benifit the film in a big way.

MemberOvomorphJul-04-2012 4:28 PMHis hiring Noomi mirrors his hiring of Russel Crowe for Gladiator. Crowe had shown he was a great actor and on the verge. Scott gave him a push and he became a superstar. I'm sure Scott's mind was working the same way in this case. He jumps on actors at just the right time.
This may go back to his catapulting Weaver's carrer. He enjoys taking unknowns he believes in and giving them every opputunity to blow up.

MemberOvomorphJul-05-2012 8:07 PMPhysically, I don't see so many similarities as some have pointed out, but in regards to Noomi's acting in Prometheus, there's definitely a resemblance of Ripley in her body language that comes through during the 'toughest' scenes. Somehow my impression is that Ripley is more of an introvert, quiet type person, while Shaw comes off as younger, less cautious, considerably more enthusiastic overall.
