Q: Okay so right now what is the biggest thing hovering above our heads RIGHT NOW as in July 8th, 2012? A: The End Of The World. Q: When? A: December 21st 2012. Q: In the movie, what is the date that shows up on screen right before we're introduced to David? A: And this is a fact! December 21st, 2093. So now let me just get right to the point and I will reference you to the link that in fact appears at the end of the movie. www.whatis101112.com Okay moving on: Q: What is that website all about? A: Well it references a few things from Friedrich Nietzsche, a 19th century philosopher. But getting more to my point: It references the "eternal recurrence of the same" Q: What is the eternal recurrence of the same? A: Source - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_return Eternal return (also known as "eternal recurrence") is a concept which posits that the universe has been recurring, and will continue to recur, in a self-similar form an infinite number of times across infinite time or space. - Now, alot of people have been saying whenever i brought this up, that it's stupid, so utterly unoriginal, and they all think it has to do with alternate universes and what not. Q: What if Ridley Scott put a different twist on this idea? Q: What if Ridley is saying that human life, as we know if right now, like me and you communicating on the internet, was wiped off the face of the earth? Q: What if the Mayan prediction came true, and through whatever events, we where all destroyed? - Now back to the "eternal recurrence of the same." - So lets, say this prophecy of the end of the world came true. Q: What if this means that at the beginning of the move, the Engineer shown, is sacrificing himself AFTER the events of December 21, 2012? Q: What if it means that we where wiped out, and the Engineers, simply decided to start over? Q: Would that answer the questions as to how the timeline at the weyland industries website says Peter Weyland was born OCTOBER 1, 1990? - Q: If you look it up right now on Google, no such man exists besides the one pertaining to the movie corret? Q: What better way for Ridley to create his own universe, but still keep it recognizable to us, than to tell us, yes this is still Earth, this is still the same universe, but what you are all missing out on is that it is the year 2089, and 2091, BUT, its 2,089, and 2,091 years AFTER the Engineers wiped out life as we know it sitting here right now on our computers? - - Before you start bashing me for all of this. First realize this is just another theory on top of the hundreds of others. - If our world was wiped out, how would we know what was left behind as far as clues to our language, our religious belief history, perhaps the Engineers wiped us out and chose to specifically leave certain clues behind. After all this is the theory of the "eternal recurrence" so who's to say they can't just keep wiping us out and trying an infinite amount of times right? - Don't forget this is all just in fun, trying to provoke new thoughts, there's no harm in it so take it easy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - And last, but not least Q: Would this be a scary concept?

Death is not an event in life: we do not live to experience death. If we take eternity to mean not infinite temporal duration but timelessness, then eternal life belongs to those who live in the present. Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) Austrian-British philosopher.

Sorry folks for me adding quotes, phrases, and excerpts from famous writers, philosophers, politicians, poets, painters and so on ..... It is that when I read a thread I try and find a phrase or quote that fits the topic at hand.

It's brave of you to postulate it, I am going to take in the idea and let it marinade in my mind for a while and will post up a response to your theory as it could prove that there may, I said, MAY have some validity to it as there was no clear indicator -AS YET - that it is anything to the contrary. For now, I feel the jury is out but that don't mean your idea is any less relevant. We shall have to wait and see how others respond in kind to your idea too! I'll be coming back upon here soon as I have got to go right now. Intersting theory to think of though! Good one.

Well done Deftones. Excellent idea and well thought out. Although I doubt it'll happen exactly like you have surmised. I think you may be on to something. Perhaps the Engineer in the prologue is not creating life; perhaps he's ending it.... Could it be that the waterfall and primordial looking location in the prologue is not thousands of years ago on Earth but 100 or so years in the future on a globally warmed melting remains of Antarctica..... Perhaps the Engineers are actually guardians of Eco systems and we have simply stuffed things up to the point of no return. The Engineers need to wipe the slate clean.....

@ brego I agree mostly but the one thing I still believe as part of this theory is that in the opening scene, mankind has already been wiped out, and he is sacrificing himself at present day Iceland which is where the waterfall is at. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dettifoss - Dettifoss is a waterfall in Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland, and is reputed to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. - The waterfall features in the 2012 science-fiction film Prometheus, standing in as landscape on a primordial planet.

OMG! Ridley Scott is the Architect of the Matrix. I KNEW it! [Sorry. I couldn't resist.] 21 Dec. is the winter solstice and the death-day of The Dying God. I'll probably put my chips in that pile in terms of its having direct allegorical relevance to the script. By the way, please do all you can to dispel the myth of Mayan Doom this year. By "you" I'm intending to personally address everyone who is reading this post. There are actually little children who are legitimately afraid of it and even teenagers who believe to the point that they are trying to figure out when and how to commit suicide so that they won't suffer. Some INCREDIBLY UNDEREDUCATED ADULTS are even asking around on the internet about how to prevent their families from "suffering." The impending danger is from the idea itself, and not the cosmos. :(

@ sukkai Most theories and fears about end of world predictions tend to be fuelled by cross references to other cultures. This is what is happening with the Mayan prediction. The trouble is that the cross references used, have not been put under proper scrutiny during translation. I shall illustrate with a quick tale. A king has a dream about dying and in his dream there is no one at his graveside. He asks his wise men to interpret the dream. The first wise man tells the king that no one is there because when he dies, no one likes him. The king does not like this and so has the man executed. A second wise man tells the king that no one is present at his graveside because he has outlived everyone. The king is pleased with this interpretation. Most end of world predictions state ‘The end of the world as we know it’. The important bit that gets mistranslated being ‘as we know it’. This does not mean a physical end. It can mean a spiritual change. The world we live in changes everyday. It can mean the end of worn out philosophies, ways of life. In order for there to be a rebirth, there must be death of sorts. Usually the end of a spiritual cycle, and the start of a new. It is rare for ancient texts to mean a physical end. An interesting point on this subject would be to note that according to some biblical texts we are actually in the year 6012 anno lucis, So the predicted Mayan events have already happened 4000 years previously. Its just a matter of who’s calendars are being used to cross reference. http://www.adishakti.org/mayan_end_times_prophecy_12-21-2012.htm

@Batchpool— There are MANY reasons why this "Cosmophobia" takes hold, but the core problem is that it is highly leverage-able for personal gain. People who cannot be held financially liable for the suicides of small children prey off of the weak-minded, sometimes even in jest when that jest is not understood by immature minds. The Maya Calendar mapping is not relevant to the Julian or Gregorian or any other calendar. It's arbitrary that it falls in what we commonly call the year 2012 CE. The relevant issue is simply that charlatans want it to scare people so that they can benefit from the irrational fears of others.

The chattiness is a great business IMO and that is why we have so many charlatans in the world unfortunately.

Dont all modern day religions like to scare people...... Id hate to think that kids these days are scared of burning in hell or not being allowed into heaven or will be reincarnated into a cockroach or so on and so on. The Mayan Calendar doesnt state that the world will end, it simply stops at the end of 2012. There was probably another one burried somewhere which starts from 2012. Its all based on the anchient stars and is nothing to be scared of. Anyhow we are discussing Science Fiction! Thats Fiction and last I checked we arent all riding hover boards and driving around in flying cars that have anti gravity drives yet..... lol

@brego Yes. LOTS of religions are fond of scaring people, but they typically don't put a "you will turn into a pumpkin in Hell on XX.XX.XXXX" expiration date on one's participation terms.

"I agree mostly but the one thing I still believe as part of this theory is that in the opening scene, mankind has already been wiped out, and he is sacrificing himself at present day Iceland which is where the waterfall is at. - Dettifoss is a waterfall in Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland, and is reputed to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. - The waterfall features in the 2012 science-fiction film Prometheus, standing in as landscape on a primordial planet." Look, just because the scene was filmed at a waterfall in Iceland doesn't inply that the actual plot of the film iand what the Eigenner is doing is ACTUALLY taking place in Iceland aswell! You got to look with more of an obvious eye than that. The waterfall scene was filmed in Iceland for no other reason than it was filmed in Iceland because the scenery looks good. It doesn't mean that there is something to infer from that into the story. Some people don't think of the variables enough. It doesn't really stae exactly where it is suposed to be to be fair, but all I want to adress and clear up is these silly people who think that because a scene is filmed in a particular location by Ridley Scott or another director then if it is otherwise stated that it is supposed to be there in the story as well then people just blindly and naievly assume that somehow Iceland plays a part in the narrative just because Ridley Scott coinsidentally chose to film certain scens there because the landscapes looked good! It os often the case that a location shoot is not directly related in any way shape or form to the plot it just serves as a double for something or somewhere else that is either referenced, named or not named. Many of the original Star Wars: A New Hope scenes were filmed in Tunisia and parts of Arizona, does this mean the th narrative of star Wars during the Tatooine segments are in some way connetcted and set in South Western America as well? They just filmed there for filmings sake!
