How Did the Engineer Get to the Lifeboat?

MemberOvomorphOctober 03, 20124194 Views26 RepliesI haven't seen any of the extra scenes as I had only got to see it online. I'm really having a hard time waiting for the Bluray to find some things out!
Anyway, when the Engineer shows up at the Lifeboat, at least the first time we see him in the theatrical version, he is at the door with no space helmet on. He breathes O2 right? So how would he have made it there without air and survive the atmosphere pressure differences?

or maybe a wizard did it

Wizards seem to be the only way out for this film in many ways :D ... but even me a person who really hated parts of this film can believe that engi was ok for a up to 20 minutes or so outside - makes sense totally when you think how advanced there knowledge is of bio engineering and there superman physique - what doesnt make sense is the humans helmets taking off and going whoooo :P .....but thats been done so many times I cannot be bothered any more with it :S ...
Thank fek Holloway is dead thats all I can say ! Probably best bit of the film him dying!

Don't hate me for this but in Avatar we can see that in Pandora a great diversity of life survives in a toxic environment for humans beings.

And on Earth some simple life forms such as Cyanobacteria can survive in hostile environments.

But if the Engineers are similar to the Homo Sapiens, well then maybe this guy is just more stronger than the humans beings and his metabolism and fitness level is superior.
LOL Which brings me to the Colonel Miles Quaritch when leaving the bunker to open fire without his mask in an atmosphere of high carbon dioxide concentration.

isnt he wearing a biomech pressure suit?
but yeah the helmet issue..... maybe he is a breath holding champion? lol

I was wondering if the air in his lungs would expand or something like it does in the vacuum of space exploding them unless exhaling lol. But yeah the absence of a helmet was the first thing I noticed.

hmmm maybe they are hardier then us and can breath other gasses maybe just for a short amount of time?
i didnt notice the no helmet issue, now its bugging me!!

Damn I can't wait for the Bluray! It's been a great long time since I've enjoyed a movie to this degree. I've been an Ancient Aliens show fan for a while, but let's face it half of those ideas are brought to light by a crackhead!

No one needs helmets in this film - its not supposed to be a realistic film - oh maybe it was :S...

we dont know enough about the engineers (culturally, technologically, physiologically etc.) to determine anything one way or the other.

well knowing the engineers have a long history of space travel, and visiting many other planets, I would assume their bodies have adapted to use oxygen more conservatively, or something like that.

well you saw the bodily reaction of the humans when they got out of the crayo - their bodies were not ready for this. As to the engineer, he slept for 2000 years and he just coughed twice and stretched and was ready to continue his mission

They didn't need the helmets to breathe on LV223. The helmets were armor against the bioweapon.
Edit: that is just my opinion but I base it on two prior pieces:
At the beginning the Engineer is not wearing a helmet and breathing just fine. Primordial earth would not have had free oxygen so they don't need as much as us.
In the holograms you see the engineers running with helmets on while in the ship, so to me that said they were used as armor and not for breathing.
The decapitated head explodes.....possibly due to too much oxygen in the room reacting to the artificial stimulus of the nervous system.
The engineer was killed at the end by the trilobite, so there is a reason Ridley had him take off his armor between his ship and Peter's hot tub.
Okay....maybe more than two pieces.

Well first of all we have to remember the planet is not as toxic as you may think, basically apart from high levels of CO2 and Nitrogen, its similar to Earth it has a Atmosphere it has gravity. Just has to many toxic chemicals that would be harmful to us.
Some parts of Earth are hostile to live in due to naturally high CO2 levels such as around some Volcanoes. Now this applies to active ones and if your right next to them.
Also if you stand near a Wild Fire after it goes out there could be dangerous levels of CO2.
Ford states that 2 mins and you would be dead, so we have to assume that a Human can tolerate the Atmosphere for a short period.
Dont forget if you take the average person and stick them in a room that has 0% Oxygen they would die after 3-5 minutes usually, someone under water can go about 1 min with no Oxygen before they drown.
But back to the Engineer well there are a number of possibilities.
1) The Engineer discarded his suit outside the ship, before entering as he knew the ship would contain a breathable environment.
2) The Engineer was able due to his physical attributes, get from his Ship faster than any human could manage. People who claim to have seen Big Foots say they can cross a area and over high fences in a mater of seconds what would take a average man much longer.
3) The Engineer is able to tolerate the atmosphere longer, due to many being accustomed to the toxins to a degree due to how long they have been exposed and work in that environment.
4) The Engineer has Superior respiratory system and can maybe hold his breath for longer, or some part of the pressure suit helps filter toxins for a limited period such as the neck area of the suit.
5) The Engineers simply can tolerate the atmosphere and do not need suits to survive in it period....
It could be a combination of the above....

Hold on a minute, BigDave. txeriff has illuminated the darkness by proclaiming above that "this movie is stupid". I'm not sure that I can accept your cursory explanations in the face of such a powerful and detailed analysis of the facts.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

lol...
The movie is done in a way that there is no clear explanation to anything really.
It could be something no one has mentioned yet... maybe he has a teleporter... dont rule it out ;)
Yeah one of my points is we can assume who the hell did he get to the lifeboat with no helmet...
But unless we was actually shown a scene of him getting from A-B like how we saw Shaw get to the Lifeboat and then to the Juggernaut after to get David, then we cant rule out that he DID/DID NOT have his suit on.
I would assume that he never, and i would assume that by foot even for him that it would take longer than Shaw did to get to the Jugernaught which in movie time was about... less than a minute without even seeing the crashed ship so we have to assume it took her at least 90 seconds, thus would take the Engineer even running a good 5 minutes.
He was not out of breath though, maybe they dont get out of breath but i doubt that.
So like so many things with this movie there is not enough evidence to prove or disprove any theory...
Again this is maybe thanks to Lindelof again, who like so many times in Lost comes up with a good idea, but then fails to come up with and cover all bases of how some things work or connect etc.

Just saw the scene where Shaw gets to the Lifeboat you can see the ship in the distance, now i look out my window and i have a field and i can estimate roughly the same distance. And it appears to be as far as where there would be a School which in a straight line would take me about 7-8 min walk not taking into account rough terrain.
So yeah maybe it took him like 4-6 minutes then, and who is to say that he cant breath outside for what 3-5X longer than us?
We just dont know.

If you look at the helmet they take off of two-left-feet, there is nothing but armor revealed. The long snout coming down (even on the Engineers who kept their heads) is not attached to anything. It probably had small holes for air exchange but the long snout looks like a tactical construction against something trying to get in their heads.
More importantly, if you have the travel resources of the Engineers with millions of planets to choose from, are you going to set up shop on a planet where you can't breathe?
