The Developed Chestburster

I’ve been thinking recently about how some have argued about the Chestburster in Alien Covenant. One of the points that stuck with me is how developed the chestburster is in terms of arms, legs and whatever else. It was argued that it was too developed.

So to begin with, we should look at each from the films then see what we have to work with.

Alien

Snake like and not very developed.

Aliens

Snake like with arms.

Alien3

Fully developed, just not in size

Queen has arms

Alien R

Just like first film

Prometheus

Fully developed, don't know what size it will grow too.

Alien C

All fully developed just like prometheus/Alien3 and we know what size they grow too.

Are the arguments about the development well placed?

Just made a new thread after seeing it for the very first time finally, and I cannot forgive the CB in this one. All the other seemed faux pas' were not all that significant to me, but that one just seemed out of place and juvenile, and not well thought out.

Fairly better defense, though, when looking at it from the perspective of all the movies, however only A1, Prometheus and A:c are canon, so...

Thats what I am sort of getting at, they all different.

Keeping with Alien, Prometheus and Alien Covenant then Alien is the one thats out of place even though its the first. The first chestburster was just a late bloomer compared to the others. We should know where we stand when Alien Awakening comes out.

When I first saw that scene I thought hmm that's interesting.

Now I really get it and love it! Here's why...

Ridley originally wanted the Alien Chestburster to have arms, so that it would look more like the adult alien, but then decided it didn't quite look right.

The A:C burster is based on a Giger design, therefore nod to H.R.

It has a translucent appearance, a nod to the original alien translucent suit design, which had to be discarded because the latex available at the time was too fragile. [I would have thought that the adult Proto-morb should have had the translucent appearance too?]

Finally, I think Ridley is showing us what he would have done in ALIEN had there been better practical materials and CGI at the time. The Chestbursters from the non-Scott movies need not be taken into account as this is his vision.

@Lone

Thank you for the reply to the thread. (A thank you to Starlogger aswell)

My thinking behind the development is that in the three films that Ridley has done, it appears that the Alien shroud be quite progressed.

Ridley originally wanted the Alien Chestburster to have arms, so that it would look more like the adult alien, but then decided it didn't look right.

The A:C burster is based on a Giger design, therefore nod to H.R.

I think you are right on this point.

I know some people have complained about a few of the nods and references to the Franchise in A:C, but for the most part I think they work well.

I love how Ridley slipped in some unused ALIEN concepts and other things he always wanted to include, why the hell shouldn't he....he now has all the tools necessary at his fingertips to fulfill his dreams!

...and we are lucky enough to have seen them! ;)

@Lone You know, I do remember quite well all that now, with several behind the scenes interviews with Ridley. So, thanks so much for the reminder. Ich verstehe jetzt.

I've said already on this forum that I really enjoyed the film and that some of the complaints are unwarranted.  On the second and third viewing I enjoyed it a bit more. I trust Ridley in making these films and I'm not seeing much wrong.

I understand that there are fans that had all these concepts about what the Alien was, its home planet, Queens etc and that they are now disappointed that they won't get what they want. It is a shame.

Yes, you said it on that last paragraph. It is a shame. Once again, we're gonna have the "Aliens" crowd versus the "Alien/Prometheus" Crowd. It's always been that way.

I love Aliens but if I have to choose its going to be Alien.

@Engineer Tech Brett

My first viewing was ruined by bloody noisy, munching, slurping people who kept getting up and going to the loo or to buy more drinks and food, blocking my view as they did so.

Would you believe there were people arriving, ten, twenty and even half an hour after the start of the film...WTF??

That resulted in me missing some key scenes and dialogue. Second and third viewings I'm up to speed and feeling much better about the film overall. Thank God!!

@Lone Ugh. THAT is the stuff that is ruining cinemas and the reason I would rather watch it on someone's WELL DONE, monster home theater system (150" PLUS, with 9.1/2 or 11.1/2 surround sound) than to go to the theater nowadays. THAT, and the inconsiderate BASTARDS and BITCHES (yeah, I said that) that think their phones are so important that they cannot turn them off inside the theater during a movie.

Fortunately, my first viewing was so ill attended (less than 15 people) that I didn't have to contend with what you did, Lone, BUT the WHOLE LEFT SIDE of the screen was out of focus the entire time.

And the movie houses wonder why theaters are going the way of the dinosaurs?

@Lone

That would drive me nuts.I hate people who make noise during films. Really hate people who can't sit still or even worse ask questions instead of just watching and finding out.

Im glad you got a much better viewing second and third time round. It is a film that does get better the more you watch it.

Engineer Tech Brett - Awesome thread! Please, contribute more! We need you. I totally agree with you. All the complaints I've read so far are ridiculous. I think it's not a problem if somebody does not like the movie, but bashing it in every second thread trying to manipulate others is not a fan activity but troll activity.

If you are a fan with negative opinion, you wait a month and share, ok, hundred times a day, no problem. But doing it after one week its release reveals that you have other obvious intentions.

My biggest bugbear is that I live in the so-called oil capital of Europe [grey, depressing, culture-less dump more like] yet there is not one bloody IMAX cinema!!

Even the daylight scenes looked like night-time. I never got a very good look at the adult Proto or many other things because of that.

When I watched the movie, it was everything OK, with one exception: the guy behind me had used a terrible deodorant spray before his cinema visit. :D

IT WAS TERRRIBLE!
