the problem with understanding what the company knows and doesn't know is lack of confirmation either by the movie makers or in film scenes. we have the weyland files but no one has confirmed these to be cannon or just a marketing extra to sell more blu rays. if they r cannon then the company are aware of a signal on lv426 but what the signal is isn't confirmed. it is assumed it is the derelict but that has been thrown into confusion now as it appears they might go the crap, distasteful and unjust path of having David be responsible for the derelict. so who knows. depends on what mood RS is in when he starts filming I suppose
gavin, can we be sure the thing was leaving earth and not just trying to escape the arctic and travel to a more populated area?
In this movies you can't know exactly what exactly the Company knows , because, you know they are Evil. After Prometheus, it was clear that the Engineer wanted to wipe out humanity around 2000 years before the events of the movie. Were there 2 factions of Engineer? How often to they check out their creation your guess is good as mine, as they welcomed en masse the arrival of ship lost for more than 2000 years? But how this adds up with the 2 faction theory? Planet 4 is implied to be hidden from human detection (both gravitational and optical?)....
Yes the writers did care more about David and his Experiments in AC.
@ red0guy
Your question prompted me to elaborate on some of the problems I have with "Prometheus" and "Alien Covenant". There are some major inconsistencies between the two prequels on the one hand and "Alien" and "Aliens" on the other hand. In "Alien" and "Aliens" we are led to believe that humans are the only space-faring race in the universe (apart from the mysterious Space Jockey who seems to have died a long time ago). Then Ridley Scott introduces the engineers. But where are the engineers when mankind starts to advance into space in the 20th and 21st centuries? When and why did the engineers stop "checking up" on humans in general and mankind's civilizational and technological progress in particular? Why did they lose interest in their creation? How is it possible that humans remain unaware of engineers until the end of the 21st century, many, many decades after starting to advance into deep space? How is it possible that at the time of "Aliens" humans still have no knowledge of engineers, be they living or dead? This needs to be explained. But I have the impression that the scriptwriters of "Prometheus" and "Alien Covenant" didn't care about such questions. I find this very annoying.
One day after David had thrown one of his embryos into the lake...

Terraforming goes bad on Origae-6.

NTFS It also holds the head of an alien in his hand.
Ancient statue holds a cup...

Plenty of water

Sorry, but I was asking that because it seemed wasteful to send such a big ship for such a small team...
I dont usually write but today i will. I liked the look of the artwork, and this is the problem as Alien artwork gives us false hope. The original Alien invoked images of something really alien (unlike most Sci Fi movies) The whole look and feel was other - worldly and disturbing. This is what drew me to the Alien universe and what made me want to see more. It drew me to the surreal art of Giger and Beksinski. It did not drive me to ponder the origins of man. The fact that the space jockey is a humanoid in a suit almost made me cry. The fact that "people of earth" have their paws all over the Alien DNA has just ruined it for me. Damon Linlelof did what he does best and created a crap screen play that cannot be resolved ("Lost" anyone), and dont even mention the characters from both recent sequels! I quite liked Alien 2-4 because they kept the Alien as something unknown / not connected with Earth, at least in where it originally came from. I guess it was just too difficult to continue the Alien story in the direction that the great artwork that we see always suggests, and keep it "unreal", keeping it Alien. The whole thing has lost its Alienness, i need to go back to my Giger and Beksinski books for this now. Can it be rescued? I dont think so, not by a big studio anyways.
The desolate landscape of Origae-6.

red0guy raised the following question: "And why send so few people on the Sulaco when it can hold hundreds?"
The answer to this is quite simple: At the time Ripley is rescued (2179) mankind has no knowledge of either engineers or xenomorphs. Ripley's report about what happened to the crew of the "Nostromo" is met with disbelief (with the exception of Burke). At the hearing at the beginning of "Aliens" nobody bothers to ask questions about the derelict spacecraft and the creature Ripley describes. The members of the commission seem to think that Ripely is talking nonsense. Ripley is even put on "psychometric probation" (whatever that is). A woman refers to the xenomorph as "a creature never recorded once in over 300 surveyed worlds". This means: By the late 2170s mankind has explored and (probably) colonized more than 300 planets/planetoids WITHOUT ever coming across engineers and xenomorphs. Since Ripley's story sounds so outlandish, the authorities don't think it necessary to send a large rescue team when contact with the colony on LV 426 is lost. The team is so small because nobody thinks that Ripley's story might be true after all. The marines don't take the mission seriously, they ask whether it is "just another bug hunt". The horror awaiting them on LV 426 is beyond their imagination. This means: While advancing into space, mankind has encountered only some primitive life-forms, mere "bugs", but no highly developed organisms, let alone another space-faring race like the engineers.
Since LV 223 ("Prometheus") and Planet 4 ("Alien Covenant") are quite close to earth the questions arises: Why didn't mankind become aware of engineers and xenomorphs in the time span between the disappearance of the "Nostromo" and Ripley's rescue (57 years)? In 2179 LV 223 and Planet 4 must surely be among the more than 300 surveyed worlds referred to in "Aliens". Or have they (and the vestiges of engineers and xenomorphs) been "overlooked", despite their relative proximity to earth?
When Ripley tells her story to the commission she is treated almost like a lunatic. Nobody on earth has ever known about the encounters between humans and engineers and xenomorphs that happened in "Prometheus", "Alien Covenant" and "Alien" because three spaceships and their crews disappeared without a trace. In the Alien Universe spaceships seem to get lost on a regular basis, it seems to happen all the time, and mankind remains blissfully unaware of the horrors lurking in space ... until Ripley is awakened from her 57-year slumber.
The lastest AVPGalaxy poll fluctuates between 51 to 49 % (in favor of Covenant) to 50-50%, but only less than 300 votes (out of which 2 are mine for Prom) so that tells nothing at all.
Terraforming goes bad on Origae-6.
This is the Big Question and Problem.... there is a demographic split between fans.. i have not registered on AVPGalaxy but i have looked there now and again, and they for the most part are a fanbase who like the Aliens and even AVP elements of the Franchise (games). They had some Opinion Polls and a higher Majority are in favor of a Alien 5 over RS Prequels and another Poll shows a even greater Majority liked Alien Covenant compared to Prometheus.
I think RS is correct, there is only so much Face Hugging and Chest Bursting before you need something else.
Disney however will look at what they feel the higher % would want and also what kind of path would attract more higher % of general public, which i think goes more in Favor of a Alieny Disney Franchise rather than a Engineer/Philosophical one.
I think David was used to show us the repeating theme... of when Creating Life, that gains Free-will and becomes Sentient decides they are superior to their creators and then Sub-Create then a whole lot of trouble happens. Its not so much about David, but showing us what Sub-Creation can be like when they rise up against the Creator... and so indeed we see a similarity with David as we do with Lucifer.
Its all very interesting... but has not appealed to the Alien Fanboys..
Maybe when exploring the Space Jockey, they should have had it as some Ancient Alien Race, that is not connected to Mankind, but is either conducting experiments on something they Found (Eggs) or they had Created those Eggs for some Purpose (Weapon) or indeed that they are a Race Created for the Purpose of Procreating those Eggs...
The whole Space Jockey = Ancient Humanoids who Predate Mankind and Created Mankind and many other life in the Galaxy, was BOLD opens up a HUGE Scope... but simply bugged some Fans, and became a bit complicated... and involving David into the similar theme of Creation, was too much for some fans.
But many of the general public claim that they saw already chestbursters millions of times already... So how representative are the vocal Aliens fans? Don't they have enough video games and comic books and movies (2)?
I'm with you BigDave that they should have continue to explore the Prometheus avenues, not David 2, not Alien 5, not Alien Disney Reboot.
We can only guess... the Source was very vague and i think mentioning it here would De-Rail this thread, but by all means make a Thread to Explore more about what the Engineers could have been or even add a reply on the recent FATE OF THE ENGINEERS thread.
I would guess its maybe about Creation and Sub-Creation Overthrowing and Overruling their Creators, maybe even without their Creators Knowledge? As for Dark Crystal i cant be sure, a theme could be that we had a Benevolent Race/Cause that had been tampered with that leads to a great calamity and fall and altering the Agenda/Appearance of Ancient Ruling Creator Race?
If we look at Prometheus and when i try and see how can Matrix and Dark Crystal connect, i can only really come up with that we have some VERY Ancient Beings/Race that should have just been contempt with their Lives/Ways and not Tamper with anything, try and Create, or even use something of Great Power that Ultimately leads to Chaos.
If we look at the Matrix.... if Mankind never invented AI and we lived just as we did thousands of years ago, then the Machines and all that went on in the Matrix would not have happened.. Our Hubris for exploring Technology and Playing Gods.. Enslaved us to our Creations.
I think Prometheus has similar theme with the Engineers, in hindsight if they had never messed with the Black Goo/Sacrificial Goo, if they never tried to Evolve themselves with Technology or Genetic Engineer and never Sub-Created.. then the Engineers could well all be living in relative peace again like Ancient Mankind.
How any Dark Crystal fits i just dont know, as this Plot just basically shows a Ancient Race, who had a source of great power (the Dark Crystal) and some of these beings became greedy and not content with their purpose and tried to use the Power of the Crystal and this back fired, cracked and Split these Ancient beings into TWO separate Factions with very different Motives/Agendas. I think i can see some similarities to what Prometheus could have been showing, but its hard to really see it being to much like the Dark Crystal. Unless the Elders are the urSkeks and abuse something that leads to the Planet 4 Engineers (Mystics) and LV-223 Engineers (Skeksis) or the Xenomorph Ancestry is the Skeksis?
I think RS opened up a lot of NEW things to be explored with Prometheus, its a shame that FOX felt that some criticism for Prometheus about how it DID-NOT clearly show us how the Xenomorph was created and HOW/WHEN those Eggs got onto the Derelict. And also while the Hammerpedes and Deacon and Trilobite are connected to the Xenomorph, the Hammerpede attack on Milburn, the Dr Shaw C-Section did not please as much as a Face Hugger and Chest Buster, and we never saw what the Deacon becomes...
Alien/Aliens showed us Alien Lifeforms killing Humans and the only thing close to this in Prometheus was Zombie/Toxic Avenger Fifield and Angry Engineer. These types of criticism towards Prometheus by Alien Fans, and the interest and excitement over Blomkamps Alien 5 (because the Fans feared Prometheus 2 would be a lot less Xenomorph and more Angry Engineers). are what i think caused us to get Logans Alien Covenant instead.
The set up was now to directly cover events that lead over a Alien: Prequel Trilogy to take us to the back door of ALIEN i think we cant leave it as it IS!
Blomkamps Alien 5 would just be a Resurrected Aliens meets Alien Resurrection Popcorn Fan Service, at the Detrimental affect to maybe the Prequels and Alien 3 and Alien R.... HOWEVER there was some interesting things that was covered.
*Alternative Xenomorph Eggs/Face Huggers.
*Maybe a Egg Morph or similar Scene
*Use of Engineer Tech/Space Suits.
I would bet these was the ideas Blomkamp had prior to speaking to Miss Weaver, before she then maybe made him come up with it would be a GREAT IDEA to use his ideas but Resurrect Ripley, Hicks and Newt as she felt maybe Ripleys Sega that came to a end in ALIEN 3 was not the way she felt it should have gone... despite asking to be killed off because she did not want to make any more ALIEN movies.
I feel Miss Weaver is trying to be Head Cook in the Kitchen and sees a ALTERNATIVE Aliens Sequel, as pleasing some Fans, but also giving the Sega more of a RIPLEY feel and Ultimately a BIG Pay Day for her.
ALIEN 5 must NEVER EVER HAPPEN.
The Prequels MUST be completed and explore the avenues that Prometheus opened up that Alien Covenant had closed off.
BLOMKAMP needs to look at his Original Pre Ripley ideas and look at what other avenues are left open in the Franchise, that dont disregard the Plans for the Prequels or what Prometheus/Alien Covenant had set down.. And that dont disregard ANY Alien movie.
There are still plenty of areas a ALIEN movie can take place....
Alien Resurrection leaves the Door open for a Sequel, and even to do prequels where we have to ask WHY was Ripley the only Source of Xenomorph?
Unless the Prequels Address and clear these up.... we have to ask about What happens and becomes of these by the Time of ALIEN 3
*Origae-6
*Planet 4
*LV-223
Then also ponder, was the Derelict the ONLY Ship with Xenomorph Cargo?
These are all avenues i think Blomkamp should be allowed to have a Stab at making a Story up for, and use some of his Alien 5 ideas...... minus resurrecting Ripley, Hicks and Newt.
I wonder which part of the Matrix, the virtual reality one or the battery part? and The Dark Crystal part? Is the Black Goo/virus the result of the Engineers "purifying" themselves? If the Title was Originally Paradise, was always David the Satan figure?
The wonder with Prometheus and the Space Jockey and LV-223 is while there are clues, it hard to get any concrete answers, only comments by RS that help and Jon Spaights Alien Engineers that can help.
So with the OT, indeed Females could be vital, maybe it was Female Engineers, maybe Humans or other Humanoids. The answer could be any of these, and could tie in with Mythos and Biblical events because we have many accounts of the GODS (Angels in Biblical Mythos) taking a liking to Females, and Human Ones.
Indeed Gavin, we dont see any direct proof of any contaminated Urns in Prometheus, maybe they disposed of Faulty Ones that caused the Outbreak? Who knows... its all very ambiguous, we do see them running away from something and heading to the Big Head/Ampoule/Urn Room. We did get that Deacon/Xeno like Scream... but its so ambiguous we cant say for sure.
I do wonder if a lot of the Problem is the Changes to Alien Engineers to become Paradise (Prometheus) while Production for Alien Engineers had begun, and maybe Props for the other Movie Draft, just got used in the New Draft, that left some HOLES (Pardon the Pun) in the movie... such as those Wounds on the Engineer Suits, such as the Chest Busted Engineers in Cryo-sleep too.
We have no WAY to be sure what happened, it could be some work was carried out and then simply used in Prometheus (Dead Engineers) because Alien Engineers explanations for them are different to what Prometheus had set up..
I think the Outbreak could have happened easy if someone contaminated the water source, or similar, we dont need to have those Urns leak or Explode to cause any infections... look at Holloway and Dr Shaw, they had not been infected with nothing but what was contained in the Glass Ampoules.
Looking at the Dead Engineers, some of them we can see are clearly HOLLOW, maybe by design fault, or maybe on purpose... The body suit of the Headless Engineer we could see was HOLLOW but his Helmet contained a Engineer Head, which when activated had Exploded... I had been led to seeing that a infection of some kind happened that was a Violent Chemical Reaction (Sacrificial Scene) and if the Engineers Body was Sealed in a Airtight Space Suit, the reaction would build up and up and under a lot of Pressure before Exploding out of the Container/Suit...
We see a Violent Reaction when we put Mentos etc in Cola... put one in, shake the bottle and attach the lid and a Violent Reaction occurs where the CO2 Forces itself out of the weakest point.. If you had a hole or few in a Plastic Bottle, and filled the Holes with say sellotape/sticky tape or plugged it with Bubble Gum etc, then filled it with Cola, the Cola will NOT LEAK but if you put a Minto inside and Shake the Bottle and the Violent Reaction would explode out of those filled in Holes.
This is what i think caused those Holes in the Engineer Suits, the Room they ran too, somehow prevented the Infection from spreading... Hence those Urns were fine... until the Climate inside was compromised by the Prometheus Crew. I think this theory adds up to when Dr Shaw drops hints about seeing something like this before.. EBOLA and thus to me this told me a Viral/Parasitical infection had taken place and not Chest Busters.
I think Problems happen when they (FOX/RS) keep changing what the Bio-Weapon does, like how the Black Goo acted in Alien Covenant compared to Prometheus.
Maybe the Parasite/Virus has a certain effect, but then when it infects a Female, this leads to something else... But ALAS with AC this does not add up to such a theory because Female Engineers had been infected and they just appeared to be turned to Carbon Statues
@Red0guy
I dont have no answers for those pieces of Work, they are not part of the Movie as far as the details such as those Humanoids... But we have to wonder WHY was they on those Concepts? Looking at what the Source Claimed to me in Feb 2015, some of the things they said do kind of add up.
It appears maybe there was a lot of explanations to the Engineers/Human connections, that all got brushed under the carpet and changed with AC... because it appears back in this time, prior to AC our David did not Create the Xenomorph that ends up on LV-426 but ALAS a lot got changed when Logan came in to re-work on what was going to be a Prometheus Sequel.
I will add it would be interesting if any of the Paglen/Green drafts came out, or if we could interview Messing/Haag and ask them why those Cathedral Concepts had HUMANS on.
The Source i had no longer speaks about the Project and wont go into details more than they already did, the only last thing they mentioned after AC was that maybe they could explore some more of the unused plans for Prometheus 2 in future movies and so they wont give nothing away... only that there was a Curveball that would catch us off guard and that its basically a Matrix Meets The Dark Crystal kind of Plot.
"I'm afraid you are seriously mistaken if you think "that the colonization of LV 426 was to provide hosts to the Aliens which was the company's biggest interest"
I had a reply for this but noticed that ATI had mentioned the same thing, in regards to Alien Isolation which happened in the same year as the Hadleys Hope Colony was set up (2137) which would mean the Company must have known, and is is coincidence the Colony was set up the same year as the events of Isolation? If we take the Game as Canon it opens up the possibility that indeed the Colony was set up with the intention to be used to become infected.
But alas we cant 100% say the Game applies to Canon, which is why there are GAPS in the Time-Line where Alternative Alien Movies can be made... No need for a Blomkamp Ret-con Alien 3, there is plenty of places to bring in another Alien movie in the Timeline.
Regarding other Replies as far as what Burke Knew etc, i think a lot have covered this up in some replies. It does appear Burke had no idea of the Derelict until after he meets Ripley, and then the Colonist are sent out to investigate.
Regarding the Moons, i think its certain we was looking at at least 3, but indeed maybe there could be 4, hopefully if RS managed to, or Disney latter do, connect a Movie to Alien or even make another Movie set between Alien and Aliens we can finally find out exactly how many Moons there was.
"Its worth a watch just to see how much has been ripped off from The Thing"
Well it was the Effects team who worked on The Thing 2011, what these guys did was a lot of work for that movie that got replaced by some dodgy CGI, so they set out to make a movie thats similar where they can basically show people... "look you can make effects like that 100% Practical"
The end result for the Thing 2011 was some CGI was poor especially the latter scenes. We see it with Alien Covenant too, if you do CGI you have to be careful because some rushed scenes can look poor and with AC, some are ok but some really are far behind a Blockbuster Level.
@Gavin
I am not sure what the Thing actually is, it appears to be some kind of Parasite to me, i would assume it can assimilate more than ONE host and so act like a Virus, but then it acts as ONE Entity yet is many and so it would be like some kind of AI Virus, where it infects many but still acts as a WHOLE, kind of like a Hive Mind. And so yeah i guess similar to the Bodysnatchers.
I think your idea was kind of cool...
I had pondered a sequel back in the 90's where i was thinking that MacReady kills Childs, but finds out he was Human, and gets Arrested and thrown into a Mental Ward.
This movie would take place 10-15 years latter and reveal that indeed as with your idea, a Biological Weapons Division has set up a Base 250 miles away from Outpost 31 and had set off a Small Nuke on the outpost from the Thing but prior recovered some Frozen Specimens and had began Testing the Organism, in order to see if it could help with Repairing of Damaged Cells and thus give a answer to Regenerate Wounds.
MacReady Escapes and finds out about this, and goes off to Antarctic to investigate Outpost 31 with a small team and they then get captured and taken to be questioned as its a Quarantined Area.
He is taken to a Outpost where the Military are trying to Re-Engineer the remains of the Space Ship to improve our Space Race Technology and McReady finds out there is another Research Facility near by and he tries to escape but is captured and taken to the Biological Facility where the Scientist tell him they have come far to exploiting and manipulating the Organic Parasite for their own gain.
McReady warns them, but they say they have Quarantine Procedures and can and have contained outbreaks. But then McReady holds the CEO Hostage and then in a attempt to Destroy the Facility areas that hold the Experiments, he unleashes the THING on that Outpost.
So basically Scientist had set up a secure place to study The Thing with many protocols to safeguard against outbreak and its Ultimately McReady who in a attempt to Sabotage their Plans and Destroy the Organism/Parasite he actually causes a Outbreak.
I do think we could maybe speculate similar could have happened on LV-223
I only got as far as a 8 page broad Plot, back in 1996 though..
Interesting to say the least, what a bizarre creature.
As far as Origae-6 it will be interesting what this place looks like, i am not sure we will see a world as habitable as Earth, but certainly a place that is very suitable, but in AC they mentioned that Planet 4 seemed to me more suitable than Oriage-6 but i assume Origae-6 is a world that can be terraformed with little or no effort, and i am expecting something between Planet 4 and LV-223 only with a breathable atmosphere... so i expect a world like LV-223 with signs of Plant Life, and Lakes and breathable conditions.
A Primordial kind of place... with landscapes similar to that of some parts of Iceland, Greenland the very North of Scotland etc

@ Big Dave,
I must say that is the first time anyone as inferred that Norris Thing and Palmer Thing as separate entities, as I have always imagined the creature to be singular. Yes, it was burnt down when it assimilated Bennings, but I feel that was the only point it had duplicated itself. I always felt it was working its way through the team one-by-one, hiding as each individual team member, I have never heard of anyone thinking it was trying to subjugate the entire team with Thing replacements.
I have always imagined a sequel would take place with MacReady, Childs, Kate, and the Thing each contained in hermetically sealed chambers within the remnants of the site now converted to an uber-secret facility where the Thing, the survivors, and the ship are being studied. In this I imagine a nuclear device being planted beneath the Things chamber, set to detonate should it attempt to escape. The story would conclude with the device detonating, destroying the facility and all within and sending the Things cells into the atmosphere, where they would circulate before falling back down to the surface, carried by the weather fronts to the US, and landing upon leaves and creating Body Snatcher pods.
The ambiguity would have been left open - did the thing want to set off the device and infect the planet or was it coerced by its captors? Were the survivors human or other Things? Was the Thing a victim or a perpetrator? Does the Thing lose become lesser in intelligence as it copies more individuals?
Thanks for sharing.I found a lot of interesting information here. A really good post, very thankful and hopeful that you will write many more posts like this one.
I think this is an informative post and it is very useful and knowledgeable. I really enjoyed reading this post. big fan, thank you!
@ dk,
The pilot must have been out of the pilots chair for a Facehugger to do its thing, but I have always maintained the belief that the hole in the pilots platform was made by the Facehugger in question after it had hatched from an Ovomorph, by spitting acid upwards to get to the pilot, in much a similar way to how the Facehugger used acid to melt Kanes helmet. Remember I showed this a while back in the graphic novel Prometheus: Absolution, that said if I was to revise this graphic novel I would make changes in line with the OP of this topic.
As for the Chestburster, I like to think it was sealed, without atmosphere in one of the arm segments of the derelict Juggernaut. Over the years I have imagined many an Alien movie, and in one treatment I explored that very possibility. Maybe I should share some of this sequel/prequel ideas?
The Thing game (~2002), I enjoyed the first half of that game. Great atmosphere, very eerie and isolated. I recall some very memorable sections of that game....Dead Space-esque like kill rooms.
Got pretty crappy and turned into a poor corridor shooter later in the game though.
As to the OP. Agreed. The Thing was more frightening because it was a total alien entity with no real motive but to spread and consume
Gavin OP is very interesting and makes a lot of sense. For me, a couple questions remain. How did the pilot get infected and how did the chest burster scurry away and burn a hole in the floor? I am fine with just knowing that it happened, but theories are interesting to ponder.
My basic idea is that the pilot was infected prior to flight, awoke and went on the mission unaware of being infected. How the hole was burned into the floor seems a bit of a dome scratcher.
Terraforming has failed...

@ dk
Its worth a watch just to see how much has been ripped off from The Thing. It also plays out a bit like Alien in that people get bumped off one by one. The effects are also very reminiscent of The Thing era. It’s not that bad. In some respects the story line could be a continuation of The Thing in that, what would have happened if the ice surrounding the alien craft had melted ( that’s not what happens btw). Its a low budget (not too low) Alien/Leviathan/Thing movie
Batchpool LOL- rip off as it seems to be, I will watch if found on Netflix or Hulu+- it's Lance after all! Is it really that bad? I have seen some stinkers.
The Thing is an old favourite of mine and as tempted as I am to add my critisms about the prequel, I have experienced the rip off Harbinger Down (2015) with Lance Henriksen. It’s like watching the after effects of someone seeing how many piri piri olives they can cram up their shitpipe.
"The commander of the USS Sulaco was Lt. Gorman." Wasn't he only the commander of the combat unit (with few combat missions)? But what do I know?
@ Ati, The Alien isolation thing was little more than an easter egg for us the fans who knew of the unfilmed scene from the script. Cameron himself also offered that the volcanic eruption that damaged one of the derelict Juggernauts arms (IRL - damage sustained by the owner of the original model) also shut off the beacon.
@ Andrew1975,
Before Russ Jorden gave birth to his chestburster, it is highly likely he was rushed back to the colony with attempts to remove the Facehugger. No doubt Al Simpson, exec in charge of the colony communicated this to Burke or Weyland-Yutani being as it was the co-ordinates they sent that resulted in Russ' predicament, but in the three weeks it took for them (Burke/W-Y) to respond, by then the colony was likely being overrun, with the colonists barricading the doors. As such, Burke/W-Y would have known that the xenomorph mentioned in Ripleys testimony had been found, and IF communications with the colony was lost weeks later, the cause was highly likely a Xenomorph infestation. I say IF, because when the Dropship circles the colony they see no sigs of external damage, and Bishop later uses the communications array to remote pilot the second Dropship from the Sulaco.
As for your BTW: Hicks states they would have to wait 17 days for rescue. 3 weeks for a Network response suggest 1-1.5 weeks transmission time - that's 7-10 days for the Sulaco to signal the all clear. If a second marine vessel was prepped ready for rescue if no all clear is received, then that 7-10 days flight time. As for the compliment of the Sulaco - why send the greenest marines they could? answer - they didn't expect them to come back. Their fate was to be the same as the colonists and hopefully Burke and Ripley. The Patna was likely sent after the Suaco to gather specimens.
The commander of the USS Sulaco was Lt. Gorman.
The beacon was sent by the pilot of the derelict in Engineer "Indo-European" using the derelict Juggernaut.
Ati I think the 2011 prequel might work for those whom had never seen the 1982 version. I did like the ending though- it linked up very nicely to the 1982 movie.
In Alien Isolation it is shown who turned off the machine in question:
In 2137, 15 years after the Nostromo set down on LV-426, the Anesidora found the Nostromo's flight recorder, detected the same beacon, and subsequently landed on the moon to investigate and salvage anything of value. The crew discovered the derelict ship and equipment left behind by the Nostromo personnel. While exploring the derelict, Henry Marlow, the captain of the Anesidora, used a tracking device to locate the beacon and disable it, preventing any other salvage vessels from discovering the ship.
