@Lawrence of Arabia

Lol, this is really great! This is a real review of Aliens?? At first I literally thought it was an extremely on the nose parody satirizing all the criticism Covenant has been receiving.

There's something really hilarious to me about the fact that the guy despises this movie so much from the very start, yet continues to sit through it and meticulously memorize every detail (despite allegedly leaving to the bathroom several times).

You know, I'm only recently learning about this personality type that devotes copious amounts of time to a thing they despise, yet it seems surprisingly prevalent.

For me, Alien Covenant is like Halloween 3. Remember that? No Michael Myers. Just killing Halloween masks. The concept was clever though. But it was not a Halloween movie.

"Many casual fans are saying they are skipping Alien Covenant after watching the "honest trailer" on youtube."

That is their choice. It should not sway others' opinions either way unless they are so insecure that they have to be told what to watch or not watch.

VivisectedEngineer I definitely think that some of the Alien Covenant ideas and themes resonate. This movie should exist outside of the Alien franchise though.

Batchpool Yes, I understand what you are saying. However I believe it would probably have been better for Alien Covenant to get less forgiving reviews from the press when it was released because the audience would have had more realistic expectations. Many casual fans are saying they are skipping Alien Covenant after watching the "honest trailer" on youtube.

@joylitt

Is it smart? Well...I don't know much about smart but I know what I like! :)

Also...something something...nostalgia is the enemy of science... something...lonely perfection of my dreams...

(AKA, I love Covenant regardless of its dissimilarities to previous Alien films or what other people think of it. I just...really really really love it and that's not likely to change.)

Sometimes I post original stories on creative writing sites and when I write one that gets negative feedback or hardly any feedback at all, I'm very happy if even only one person likes it, and I just think to myself "Ok. This story can be just for that one person, then."

So, I just hope the writers and other artists of this movie know that their work was not in vain and there were at least a handful of people for whom the movie really resonated.

I know in a free-market society the opinion of a handful of people doesn't mean much for the future of the product, but, I hope it does mean something to the artists.

I am sorry for the viewers who the movie didn't work on. I can't relate to them but...I do hope they find the next one more enjoyable.

...And I guess that picture of David lamenting the destruction of his neomorph is a pretty accurate representation of how some of us feel when Covenant gets insulted, so, very topical selection, joylitt! Haha

...Poor David and Neomorph :(

When a movie has a good structure and plays within the conventions of the action genre with conviction, has likable characters, high stakes, and nail biting suspense, you can ignore many flaws. It is a very different thing when a movie is a pretentious patchwork of different genres, it has no surprises or suspense and takes pleasure in showing how stupid their characters are.

Human nature is a very strange thing. Take for instance the Emoji movie, a movie that has been reviewed ( don’t shoot the messenger! ) as being “a pile of shit”, “cancer incarnate”, and “a crime against humanity”. There are also far worse reviews about it, but I think you get the point. Yet the Emoji movie, has already started to make a profit regardless of the less than positive reviews.

A strange process happens in the minds of humans which can sometimes defy the boundaries of logic. When too many people say something is shit, curiosity kicks in and the following thought occurs. Is it really that bad? And so people then go out and want to make their own minds up.

Given that Alien Covenant was released back in May to a barrage of bad reviews, I find it very strange timing that just as the DVD’s and Blu Rays are being released Honest Trailers suddenly appear on the radar going down the old lets slate AC route.

Now that’s what I call timing!

But why so many articles? I think that is somewhat obvious. AC makes money. With that many negatives , you are bound to end up with a positive.

So what to do about the bad reviews? Bring them on! Some might say all publicity is good publicity, even the pile of crap publicity.

The problem these days is that box office takings are not as representative of a movies success as they used to be. Technology is changing and so are peoples viewing habits.

Thank you! It seems so obvious doesn't it?! why do critics always rip on about box office hits only, and not the rest of the sales from merch/streaming/dvd sales etc.

The cinema is no longer the primary means for viewing a movie. Many viewers opt to wait and watch a film on dvd/streaming these days.

Batchpool How much money does it take to make a decent Alien franchise movie ?

Takes money to make money? I'd imagine 150 million to 200 million. If it wasn't that much ALL studios would spend 40-50 million on their superhero/action flicks.

Covenant 2: If the sets are still built(not destroyed!)they should save some cash?

How about an Alien convention called: Xeno Feast?

See you @ XENO FEAST 2017!

Nice Theory... i am not sure we can read to much into this as they are using the Cast Members real names...

i.e

WALTER    MICHEAL FASSBENDER CREW CV-07 [SYNTHETIC]

And so we are getting hints at those behind the Video as far as Cast and Production.

Shea is usually a Boys name but then sometimes a Girl can be called Shea... Hlynur is a Scandinavian Boys name.

So these are likely the Names of those cast as the Technician and Voice of the Computer

The interesting parts are the D Class Synthetic and indeed the as you had assumed Virtual Synthetic... i cant argue with that and indeed it is likely a Computer like MUTHUR

The WY19.37 is interesting and maybe a Easter Egg?

As we did have in ALIEN Special Order 937

“Fingers crossed for a Good Home Video Return..”

Personally, this is where I think the big money is now.  I just hope I’m right on this one. I think too much focus has been spent on looking just at box office returns as a performance marker. I think that until the home video return comes in, any comments on AC’s success or failure have been premature. If I’m right about the home video returns being good, then I would say AC has actually been a success.

As you say, fingers crossed.

BigDaveAlien: Covenant ForumBlack Goo thoughts (spoilers)

Definitely see the Black Goo in Prometheus had something moving inside it when David held it in his fingers, but  David only had the internal substance from within the Ampoule/Vials.

So indeed it could be some-kind of Parasitic Organism, this fits more with the Original Idea in Jon Spaights Alien Engineers where we have Nano Scarabs.

So this Parasite could be Nano-Worm like Organisms?

But AC has tried to answer it, but in doing so has Muddied the Waters a little.

Where was it from?  Who knows... I would say the Original Form is something the Engineers Never Created, but they indeed could have experimented upon it.

If the Source i had from 2.5 years ago is correct, then the idea was the Substance is a Creation Tool, and it accounts for everything Biological.

It was supposed to as far as they claim also be like the Forbidden Fire of Prometheus, and the Fruit from the Tree of Life and Knowledge in the Bible.  Even went further to say that Paradise had a Obelisk growing in front of some Orchard and beyond a like Pathway/Valley of Statues on each side, depicting Engineers and other Humanoid and not so Humanoid beings.

This Black Obelisk was neither Metal or Rock, and it had Roots and so it was growing... and it was the Tree of Forbidden Knowledge from the Bible... a Creation Tool.  At its centre it Glowed Green and this is where the Engineers obtained the Substance from.

LV-223 the Green Crystal is a Shard of this Obelisk Stolen by the Engineers and used against the wishes of their Hierarchy who in their Hubris were Punished for this.

Sadly until Paglen and Greens Work comes out, we cant be sure if this explanation is correct

BigDaveAlien: Covenant ForumBlack Goo thoughts (spoilers)

It was a Thought out Substance by Jon Spaights Drafts...

That became a McGruffin in Prometheus, but not if you took into account Alien Engineers.

And now... well who knows what they are doing, It now has to be a Mutagenic Pathogen that either acts like a form of AI so its a Intelligent Parasitic Pathogenic Mutagen that sets out to Procreate.

Or/And its something that Was Programed/Can be Programed.

But indeed such a lot of work went into this, for such a small portion of Screen Time... its shame we never saw more and i bet it would have been GREAT to take a walk around some of these Sets.

Mind you there is a lot more work into the After Effects than just the Sets and i think Wayne Haagg and his fellow Production Team have done a great job here.

BigDave So you really don't think Alien Covenant is in a difficult position? I mean, with all the creative decisions, this Blade Runner crossover, the flute and all the things for which this movie is being ridiculed. I would say even more than AVP and Alien Resurrection. It's the creative decisions what put Alien Covenant in the hot seat, and there is no way 20th Century Fox will invest more money in repeating the same mistakes.

Fingers crossed for a Good Home Video Return..

I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion but i can understand ATI's frustration as the other Topic could come across as FOX are in a bit of Trouble and its all thanks to Alien Covenant.

Look Alien Covenant has been a disappointment, this is FACT

Financially the movie has not hit the Mark expected by FOX  Not considering Marketing and Promotion Costs.

But its a Far Cry from being a FLOP.. and it by no means, puts FOX Financially in a difficult position.

Alien Covenant has still made a Profit and while FOX may have expected more of a % Return.. it has made Money and we have yet to see Japan Release (which should have happened within 4 weeks after USA) and we have Blu-Ray and DVD Revenue to come.

IRaptus I have not played Condemned but that game play style sounds like it could work well with an Isolation follow up especially if it was on Hadley's Hope. It would be interesting to have a couple powerful weapons with limited ammo and be able to only carry one at a time. Like Isolation, using weapons would be a last resort as they make noise. I had quite a bit of ammo at the end since I was too afraid of giving my position away by firing weapons.

BigDaveAlien: Covenant ForumLet’s Finish the Sentence ’We’re Not Keen On Kicking Movies…’

Everyone be it a Fan, or people who run such Sites/Companies are free to Praise or Kick a movie if they wish so...

Ultimately a lot does come down to Money and on its own a $97M Budget and $233M Return sounds not bad... thats actually decent...

However.... the Marketing has to be taken into account, and while it will still make a Prophet i would Safely Assume that FOX Expected the movie to at least bring back $300M

We have the Japanese Market.. but i dont see this making a huge difference due to how long they delayed the Release. Especially into todays World where Leaks, Reviews, Screenshots and even Illegal Downloads of Movies can be accessed  and spread quite easy.

If we went back to the 90's then it does not have as big a impact but nowadays releasing a movie a lot after other Western Countries especially in a Market like China is pure STUPID

FOX have made a Epic Error here... the Japanese has the potential to be one of the Largest Markets if we went by % of Total Population and FOX should have released the Movie in Japan in June the latest.

I do fear what they have done could effect the potential Box Office numbers compared to if the Movie had been released way prior... so this is a Dumb Mistake by FOX.

Saying that i think the Japanese Market could make back $20M

Hopefully a bit more... Sadly its about the Money and i would not be surprised if FOX are considering what to do next, just as Paramount may be with the Terminator Franchise... the Problem with Alien Covenant is its now set its self up for a Sequel and so it would be a shame if we never got one.

But FOX are the ones who have to consider the $$$$ and i feel they dont take too many risks, and like to conserve $$$ and i think how well the Next Predator Movie does could also have a impact of FOX and their outlook on their Sci-Fi Franchises.

i dont want to be getting into details as i have covered this over and over about the Short Comings of AC.

A point i will pick out is many Sites and Articles seem to touch upon the Franchise as HORROR?

I disagree it is a SCI-FI movie that has some Horror Elements and the First one was more of a Sci-Fi Horror... And here is the Problem...

Marketing had pointed out this is a return for RS to the Alien Franchise True as far as bringing back the Horror and Xenomorph of the Original and Scarring the $£%^£ out of people.

The Franchise since Alien offered something a bit different, ALIENS was more a Alien Action Sci-Fi,  Alien 3 returned to more of the Horror Alien Sci-Fi of Alien and Alien Resurrection was more a Action movie like Aliens that was trying something a bit radical and inventive (Clones of Ripley).

Prometheus came along and tried to be a bit of a Philological and Pioneering Sci-Fi movie.... a Space 2001 meets Alien.

So the Franchise has no real set Genre... and Alien Covenant attempted to add all of the Horror from Alien and Alien 3, the Action of Aliens and Alien R and Philological elements from Prometheus into ONE Package... Acting as a Prometheus Sequel and Alien Prequel... and really not delivering on the Action/Horror or to a degree the Philological Genres.

@ joylitt

The bottom line as I see it is this. There is more than one product on the market, and I would say that Fox have set a precedent here. In general, people want value for money and I cannot see why people would want to gamble their chances at a cinema, when there are alternatives that can appear to be better value for money.

Any movie goer can vote with their feet (and wallet), so it just seems insane that one hand is worried about losing bums on seats, whilst the other hand would appear to be working on losing bums on seats.

As for the storyline, I’m satisfied with were it has finished up to now. As for what comes next, what is really on my mind is whether there would be a big enough budget available to produce a next instalment that would do the franchise justice. I think what we have in Prometheus and AC works to the extent that it is within the Alien universe, but as yet has not really backed up into the original Alien movie to affect it that much. I don’t think I am that keen on having another instalment that would risk cutting too many corners just for the sake of having another film, especially if the budget is not there to deliver something that would tick all the right boxes.

I hope that it is possible to get the whole project completed and completed well. That being said, Fox will want to see a good return on whatever they might invest, and right now I think the jury is still out on deciding what direction will be taken. That might not be what people want to hear, but in the movie industry money talks.

Maybe joylitt is being paid by someone else?  I am waiting for him to start Promoting Camerons AVATAR 2 lol

Everyone has their own opinions and this is not a ALIEN-COVENANT Site its a Site contributed to all things Alien and when/if the Next movies comes along, then the Topics and Site Name to redirect to etc would be ALIEN AWAKENING instead (if this is the name they will stick to).

But i agree with ATI the Title could be misleading as there is no evidence to suggest the performance of AC has put the movie in any HOT SEAT my advice to ATI is i would not be concerned about other peoples views...  while AC indeed had disappointing results and a big problem was the Marketing Spend and so we are seeing the same Overspending on Marketing that drove up the Break Even Mark just as Terminator Genisys had.

Prometheus did a better Return than Alien Covenant % wise, but this should not affect if people Enjoyed or likes AC or even if they disliked Prometehus, we should all be entitled to our own Oppinions.

I watched AVPR few months back and saw some good in it as far as a Popcorn Flick... then i watched Aliens and it dawned to me that Aliens was just a Popcorn Flick too... just a better written, casted and filmed one...   AVPR suffered from lack of Budget and some really stupid story about making this more the Typical Teen Horror Flick...  like I know what you did Last Summer Meets AVP lol

By the way i am not saying AVPR is as Good as Aliens lol...

BigDaveAlien: Covenant ForumI'm so confused

The Good thing with a bunch of Questions from someone who was not following things about any sequels well enough..

Is you get some very straight forward questions confusing from their perspective and so answering these for you will indeed HIGHLIGHT some very Good things you bring up.

First of All... The CGI Engineers, in Prometheus they was not so CGI they was Practical affects where after effect lighting and touch ups to make it look more glossy and shiny and so indeed there was a element of Computer Generated After Effects used to Polish up the Engineers and add few details and they looked very interesting.

The Alien Covenant ones, appeared to now have as much detail, even as far as not using black contact lenses, but this was a Scene that was a Flash Back and only a Short Scene and Alien Covenant had a $30M+ Less Budget than Prometheus which with Inflation would be at least $40M less.  And so maybe some cuts had to be made and for showing thousands of Engineers (many was duplicated with Digital Effects) then having to show many close up Engineers for just less than a Minute maybe FOX/RS with Budget cuts felt that bypassing on some details would not be noticed.

But then RS had said these are Engineers and he is hinting the route that their may be many different versions of Engineers and the Engineers are not a RACE but a Civilization and so the Engineers in Prometheus and Alien Covenant are connected but are also Genetically slightly different... either one was created from the other, or one is above the other in the Hierarchy or they are operated by a Genetic Engineering Evolution.

so the difference is likely one of these castes if you would predates the others, are above the others or created the others or one of them is Genetically Evolved more than the other.

The Xenomorph in the other Prequel the Alien at the end of Prometheus is not a Xenomorph as per say... it is Genetically related due to the Black Goo where they either both come from the Black Goo, the Black Goo comes from one of them as in a previous ancestral Form.

Prometheus had Xeno-DNA clues, just they was not enough for a number of Fans, and we did not see anything like the Xenomorphs as a far as a Alien Attack.... Prometheus started life as Alien Engineers by Jon Spaights which was more Alieny, it had more Xenomorph connections and more kind of clues to the Xenomorph and Derelict on LV-426

FOX decided the idea about the Space Jockey/Engineers and the Curve-ball Creators/Gods idea was very Bold and interesting and as the Xenomorph had been done over and over, they chose to focus on the Engineers more and got Lindeloff in to tone down the Xenomorph connections.

Ridley Scott had not directly said Prometheus was a mistake, he had said that in Hindsight taking the Story away from the Xenomorph and trying to set up a sequel that would distance its way from the Derelict/Cargo in Alien and tone down the Xenomorphs was a mistake in Hindsight...   So basically they felt Prometheus should have had a closer connection to the Xenomorph and set up a sequel to get to WHY those Eggs got on the Derelict and WHY/HOW those Eggs were Created.

The Above is the Reason that Alien Covenant was made, FOX/RS felt it was a mistake to take a route that would go away from those Direct Questions regarding the Eggs and Xenomorph, and so they now wanted to give us a movie that would now take a Step by Step more direct route to ALIEN and the Xenomorphs and even introduce the Xenomorph back into it.

Rather than a movie Franchise Prequels that would Step Further away from the Xenomorph Eggs and Creation in Alien.

I would also Bank on the Hype and Antisipation for Blomkamps Alien 5 which gave us Eggs and Xenomorphs and Queen... i think FOX saw the reaction to Alien 5, and the criticisms at Prometheus as far as going away from the Xeno and Space Jockey Event, and following Dr Shaw and her Philosophical and Faith related Quest and Questions and to explore this Humanoid Creators.

It really is hilarious that people keep calling a movie with a 71% critical positive review conglomerate "a failure". So far, it is within the top 25 of all grossing movies for 2017

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2017

, and that shall surely increase as the Asian market's numbers come into play (why this staggered release is done I'll never understand, but it is what it is). So, to call a "top 25" movie a "failure" and to say the movie house is "on the hot seat" is a bit of a stretch.

Your question is a great one...  We have all asked that.  I feel like we skipped a movie when we got to AC.  A proper Prometheus sequel should have had David and Shaw landing on the planet...  David starts experimenting, Shaw is trying to communicate with a neutral Engineer...  Then David's crazy black goo experiments start tearing up the Engineer temple/city...  Shaw is hiding out.  Engineers battling the creations...  David wins, Shaw sends distress signal and gets killed...  so forth...  Give us the link between the two.

Ridley Scott said that Prometheus was a "mistake" because he didn't listen to the audience, so with Covenant he gave the audience was he thought it wanted. Unfortunately, things didn't turn out so well and Covenant ended up being more unsuccessful and disliked than Prometheus.
