The second one could also be a description for "Pandorum", which is actually better than "Passengers".
joylitt LOL! It was not a request from my end. It pays the same as members too!
dk whaaaat? Moderator now? Did you follow Ripley's motto of "Who do I need to f*** to get out of this (plain basic user status) boat?"
Not so much Ridley, as the man who wrote Alien - Dan O'bannon. He talked about those parasitic wasps way back in 1979 interviews, and on the DVD/Blu Rays. I assume he understood the wasp/virus relationship.
It's nothing new. That parasitic infection idea has been in dozens of sci-fi stories long before Alien. As I recall, the Alien production was even sued by a writer who wrote a story back in the 1930s or '40s about an alien depositing parasitic eggs in peoples stomachs.
Everything the alien does exists in nature, even stealing the DNA of the host.
Kethol andTiwaz- Thanks- those are correct after researching! We were in very high temperature/stress conditions at the time and titles got mixed up. Off to Amazon!
1. Jupiter Ascending?
2. Passengers? First thought of Silent Running but they got no cryos.
Jupiter Ascending and Passengers.
O_O If we survive to be extracted...? I'm sure Wey-Yu will act with all due alacrity... /s
*Suddenly regrets wishing for a payout, realizing that it effectively disincentives the rescue effort*
I think #2 is actually Sleeper. The search continues.
There is a prizey prize preordered! BWW has been sent evidence to confirm. Heh heh! Should be fun during October!
Maybe because Ridley Scott wanted to give us at least two more movies? What is wrong with that?
I pre-ordered it on youtube. ...Which was probably really silly because I'll probably wind up buying the director's cut later.
Lawrence of Arabia Why borrow from "Frankenstein" and "Paradise Lost" when you already have the seeds of an original Mythology in "Alien" (1979), and even in "Prometheus"? That is what I find so disappointing... trade something original for something we have seen too many times already.
Covenant was more of a set-up of things to come. The marriage of Alien and Prometheus (which was already the marriage of Alien and Blade Runner but I digress). Covenant had a great story of Paradise Lost, Frankenstein (The Modern Prometheus), and of a pilgrimage. Ridley had planned to introduce the Alien mythos later but I guess decided now was a better time than any. I feel like people need to be more patient. The characters make dumb decisions but when it's least expected it makes sense. The people being "stupid" is a minor issue that is being made into a mountain imo. The Covenant said the planet was safe and hospitable to humans, so why wear the masks? Cuz of evil pathogens (which the ship should've detected but didn't) that they had no idea of? We as the audience are aware but not the characters. I guess everyone in Star Wars is stupid for not always wearing protective gear on alien planets (Dagobah for example). While I watching Covenant for the first time, it was a great film full of suspense and terror (I wasn't totally scared cuz I've seen a ton of horror films but I felt the dread). I feel like Covenant is being unfairly hated. Yes it has its flaws but so did Alien and Aliens guys. Let Ridley finish his story before jumping the gun, we'll get our answers.
*Pats VIVISECTEDENGINEER on the shoulder* None of us ever sign up for being eaten by nightmarish, biomechanical life-forms. Yet, here we are! I would not worry a great deal about compensation, however. If we survive until we can be extracted, we will likely receive a great deal of credits! :)
I don't think Covenant was the last we've seen of Walter in any shape or form. What you say makes sense cuz how else will they find David?
@Kethol: So Ridley considers the life cycle akin to that of the polydnavirus?
MonsterZero I supported the film by going to the movie theater :-) I would agree with the poster who said that we are hyper critical of the Alien movies. And this is because the first two movies set the bar pretty high. We expect at least an immersive experience, good characters and a high stakes story. When Prometheus came along, we got a promise of a bigger scope, and even though the characters were stupid, it made it possible for the franchise to go in a lot of interesting directions. Covenant seemed to have taken the least interesting path though. I hope the studios understand this is not the case where a franchise has been milked so much that the audience lost interest. This is the case where there has been a misstep which needs to be corrected. I have the impression that if they make some surveys targeting both the fanbase and the general audience, they will find out exactly what went wrong. But they need to ask the right questions.
I was thinking the SJ was face hugged and woke up later not knowing what happened- sort of like what happened in AVP.
Ultimately, it likely wasn't thought through back when the movie was made and they had no idea it would become what it is now.
Joylitt, Okay. I just think this franchise is going to need support from all it's fans. Good or bad movies are going to happen. Maybe the next one will work for you? But I fear we'll never know.
MonsterZero It is sad to admit, but Covenant doesn't work for me even on the visual level. It sorely lacks the "awe factor" that is fundamental for a space movie to put you in outerspace. I rewatched Danny Boyle's "Sunshine" the other night, and I found the visual aspects of that movie to be much more accomplished than those of Covenant. And I don't like how Ridley Scott has embraced the digital effects this time around: it killed the atmosphere and the soul of this film. And I am not even going to start talking about the story, all this grand guignol crossover involving David. This is not what an Alien movie is supposed to be. So no, I might not be buying the blu ray.
Ridley indicated it could have been any planet. The scene just showed how the Engineers seeded life on planets, not a specific one.
"… the sequence at the beginning of the film (Prometheus), that is fundamentally creation. It’s a donation, in the sense that the weight and the construction of the DNA of those aliens is way beyond what we can possibly imagine...it doesn’t have to be (Earth). That could be anywhere. That could be a planet anywhere. All he’s doing is acting as a gardener in space. And the planting that life, in fact, is the disintegration of himself." - Ridley Scott
I'm not sure it would be feasible... If they could upload and download their consciousness so easily, AI would be rife for tampering by anyone and everyone. Pretty sure WY would never allow that.
But wouldn't David sink like Data?
I actually like AVP for what it is. I thought we all had a silent understanding AVPR would never be mentioned again, but whatever. If your friend likes AVPR better, I am honestly at a loss of words. AVPR not only lowered the bar, people had to dig a six foot trench in which to place the bar.
Hahahahaaaaaaaaaaaa!
AvPR is a pile of shite. Not wasting words on what makes it so. I've already wasted too much time on this. RX out...
What if synths can/could be uploaded and downloaded.....?
Would everyone be okay if David uploaded his core into Ash and became Ash(David finally getting defeated by the crew of Nostromo....head knocked off and burned alive)?
Uploading yourself into a weak older synth is probably not wise...but maybe he needed to escape again and had little choice?
"David's body was badly damaged, he could not move. Ash propped him against the wall.
Ash "I fear this is the end old friend..."
David "No. ..This is just the beginning..."
"
"Remember, he's not trying to fool Walter with a phony voice problem... there's no point to doing that. Again: no wound in the chin, and they make quite a point of showing the underside of his chin several times:"
Why wouldn't he try to fool Walter? It would prove a distraction, which is exactly what he wanted.
As I have already said about the puncture wound, who's to say he didn't patch it up in the 20 minute time frame RS gives for the entire time during the fight and subsequent escape by David? Daniels and Lope aren't going to be looking for it whilst dealing with an Alien trying to get inside the transport.
Once he was on board the Covenant, he could have patched it up as the first thing to do. Daniels doesn't come upon him until he's stapling his face. Or, maybe such a small would could heal on its own.
Either way, it's David.
Definitely not:
Mal and the crew of the Serenity (a crossover of the dead and the dying).
Predators. AvP3! (Where is my shotgun? I need to eat some buck shot!).
Captain Kirk et al (Lindeloff can put the final nail in the coffin of both, simultaneously)
The X-men
Alf
Alas, Robin Williams is no longer with us (may he RIP), so it can not be Mork.
Me, it won't be me either.
Could be Kim Jong Un in a cameo...probably eats a facehugger or 7 as appetisers then proceeds to try and eat the rest of the hive.
"Nathan Adler - I am convinced the Engineer 'creating life' at the start of Prometheus was not on Earth, but the planet we saw in Covenant."
Wasn't it always the case that it wasn't Earth? I'm not sure it was Planet 4 either, but it could be interesting it it was... Maybe seeding is how they 'colonise' worlds? Spread their genome in a habitable atmosphere and leave it to grow naturally for that world?
Strange. That's not in my Covenant novelization :)
In the book Muthur called it an "atypical energy burst consisting of heavy particulate matter" with a bunch of gobbledygook about it being masked by a "concetenation of gravitational distortion in the vicinity". She called it a "neutrino burst" in the movie.
Walter called it "a highly charged shockwave" and "charged particle flares" in the book, and Foster generically referred to it as a "particle wave". In the movie Walter called it a "highly charged shockwave from a stellar ignition", which is a star being born or super nova.
In the book Oram said "what hit us essentially came out of nowhere" and Walter said it was undetectable in Deep Space. In the movie Walter said "It was a random localized event sir. There is no way to detect spontaneous Stellar Flares until it is too late."
There is some clarification of that in the promo material for Walter, stating that his synthetic skin will heal. It could be assumed that David has some similar capability, but maybe slower, more human speeds, which would explain why he needs his face stapling.
As for the hole in his chin, he could have found a way to disguise it until he could find a way to heal it once on board the Covenant...
1 - Engineers
2 - Weyland-yutani
Then I have sensible and not so sensible comments. Which do I choose?
3 - "Elders" or the dude's in the teardrop ship from the start of Prometheus.
4 - Can't think of anything logical, unless it's a "player" we haven't met yet.
Edit: Number 4 could be Walter chasing down his doppelganger with perfect chin. He wants that chin back!
According to RS, it was condensed time. He states in the Empire interview that it took a total of 20 minutes for the fight, incapacitating of Walter, taking his clothes, cutting off his own hand, and running after Daniels and Lope. Plenty of time to take Walter's place. Which is what RS also says happened. David did not implant himself in Walter.
Lawrence of Arabia Cheers, mate. I am glad you enjoyed it and speak openly about it. I haven't see it yet, but by all means I trust Ridley Scott on this one. So you are not the only one, only that the critics are always louder and they seem to be many. I am not ready for the announced war of worlds if that may be the end of the franchise, I want at least two more movies from Ridley Scott and him alone.
I tried to see it again today.....would have been my 5th showing...but it was gone!
Going to really miss watching it on the BIG screen.
@Capt Torgo and @Joylitt........Are you going to buy it on DVD/Bluray?
Ah, so you are one of those bug whiners? :) And I loved the story.
"Sir Ridley gives them aweful speaking and terrible decision making"
I think you mean John Logan, the writer? The actors speak the lines in the script. Ridley directs the scenes in the script.
I hope you realize the damage done by James Cameron with his Aliens as since then some people started to call the xenomorph a "bug". No wonder that Blomkamp was considered to continue the franchise at some point after his prawns from District 9. I am glad Ridley stepped in and even if he considered the beast is cooked he did it some justice. After all, it was feared even by engineers, only the dumb colonial marines could call it a "bug". It is hard to get past the Aliens fuck up. That should be removed from the franchise. Just watch it again, after A:C and see the difference.
