Thanks on joining in guys, I had almost given up on this topic lol.
Ripley on trial for blowing up a very expensive ship with story about alien killing the whole crew. Only gets a slap on the wrist with a suspension.
Ripley in Aliens: “57 years in hypersleep. And I still can’t give up smoking.”
- Andrews - "Let me see if I have this correct, Lieutenant; it's an 8-foot creature of some kind with acid for blood, and it arrived on your spaceship. It kills on sight, and is generally unpleasant. And of course, you expect me accept all this on your word."
- Ripley - "No. I don't expect anything."
- Andrews - "Quite a story, Mr Aaron."
- Aaron - "Right sir, it's a beauty. Never heard anything quite like it, sir."
I see the flute as a kind of password device, since the Engineer wasn’t able to do much before he played his tune. Maybe not the most secure password in the universe, though, since it can be overheard. Perhaps that’s not important, and it’s just a mechanism to stop burglars from casually wreaking havoc. Of course, all that went to pot when the Juggernaut started randomly spitting out holographic recordings.
In William Gibson’s excellent novel Neuromancer, there is a scene where the protagonist has to unlock a terminal using a “word” stolen from the character Lady 3Jane Marie-France Tessier-Ashpool. The word is never stated, but the following obscure lines are said of the unlocking.
-now
and his voice the cry of a bird
unknown,
3Jane answering in song, three
notes, high and pure.
A true name.
I like to imagine that the “word” was in fact a simple tune.
Sound is a form of energy that could have been used in ways unknown to humans.
Except Willy Wonka made it work here on Earth.
Been a while since we had some levity. Thank you Bruthah.
Roasting a hallowed franchise.....Well, may as well give it a go. Ahem....
No one mentioned the obvious when coming out of cryo sleep: Damn, you got some serious stank yet don't appear to have ever made any poops or pees.
The bar has been set low, so let the roast begin!
As Thoughts_Dreams had mentioned the Derelict had been Envisioned by HR Giger to be a Truly ALIEN Bio-Mechanical Ship that are GROWN and so YES it would seem that he FELT that the SHIP was LIVING!
But this was NEVER covered in the Franchise and so by the TIME we get to Prometheus we had Ridley Scott decide to go for a more Mechanical Aesthetic over Biological and so going with the Prequels then i would ASSUME the Juggernaught Ships are NOT really ALIVE/LIVING as per say.
Is the DERELICT ALIVE? thats a Different Matter it depends on a Conclusion, there is a AESTHETIC Difference... but Ridley Scott had said that the Derelict and Juggernaught are separated by Hundreds of Years and the ONE is in Pristine Condition while the other has WELL become a Rust Bucket so to Speak.
Regarding the FLUTE... it seems the Engineers Technology is Activated by things we cant comprehend and that the FLUTE could be similar to say your CAR KEY/FOB ( frequency operated button) where a Sequence of Specific Notes are required to ACTIVATE the Ships Navigation/Engines etc.
@Thoughts_Dreams
We can ONLY go and HOPE! I hope they dont ABANDON the Engineers but i also HOPE they dont just Portray them as in the COMICS ;)
I trust that he'll be back, Very difficult to bring BD. Rather than comparative subjects, you ought to make an intriguing theme with hypotheses.
We should assume BigDave isn't returning for quite a while and it has nothing to do with us or him in some difficulty of any sort.
You're just like me lol. I watch the behind the scenes on the movies on a regular basis. I never forget Bolaji Badejo's name thanks to a simple detail in Alien Isolation, the cigarette brand in game is named after him. And he said exactly that, something like "I got to be the Alien. It doesn't get much better than that."
Giger got screwed out of 3 because well Alien 3 was troubled to say the least lol. I like to think his original inner jaw concept was used for Sil in Species.
You're very welcome ninXeno426. I love to read things about the Alien movies, like how they found the guy to play the role of the Xeno in Alien and his involvement in it, for example. His name was Bolaji Badejo, I had to look it up which is a pity since I remember the names of the rest of the actors in it. What is interesting is that he only did one movie, but what a movie to be in if it is the only one that you will do.
Another interesting thing is how Giger was treated when it came to his involvement in Alien 3. You can probably also write about how Weaver's role in the production of the movies changed the more they did. There are so many details in the evolvement of the franchise that you can write about from different perspectives.
To me it was kind of vague like a lot of the movie, but maybe it was. Who knows what kind of technology that they use? It isn't to say that the ship was alive even though I remember something about the derelict being grown or that it was a possibility but the one in Prometheus seems to be different. According to the blog Alien Explorations Giger thought that the derelict might have been grown.
https://alienexplorations.blogspot.com/1979/01/having-derelict-ship-idea.html
Strange Shapes also writes about it
https://alienseries.wordpress.com/2012/12/02/the-derelictpyramidsilo/
Your question about the flute-thing, maybe the Engineers have technology that is more advanced than what we have. It seems that it was for activating the ship which would be fascinating. Hopefully we will see more about the Engineers in some other alien-project, so they expand the franchise, so we won't get fighting against xenomorphs part 100 so to speak.
this fake Netflix documentary looks really funny, i'm gonna watch it.
I find it really cool thanks for sharing.
2020 sucked something awful. At least I got some neat Alien stuff through out the year lol. But that's about all the good I can say about it.
It covered some things I had forgotten about- at least in less than a year. I see the Australia fire is there but it seems like it was a few years ago and not within a year.
haha. What a quote!
"Id say it [2020] was a train-wreck and a shit-show but that would be unfair to trains and shit"
Many thanks for taking the trouble to comment it is always appreciated and please feel free to make the link for others who might enjoy.
Even going back to my reading group in the summer of 2018 I remember one saying you had me all the way. I have lost count of the number of rewrites (not just corrections) I have done but that essential point that the subject matter is perfect for a mystery has always been there.
Once again thank you.
once l started reading , had to read it all , good stuff
@BigDave: If the Engineers sacrifice themselves to obtain the life-form depicted in the mural, why are they running from it in the looped playback on LV-223, or for that matter the surviving pilot Engineer resisting it at the end of Prometheus? Also, if their agenda was equivalent to Peter Weyland's, why be so incensed at him? Also, if their agenda is to sacrifice their DNA so they can achieve a form of immortality through it resurrecting itself, this suggests to me they are definitely equivalent to the "dark angels" of the book of Enoch, creating a twisted version of Biblical sacrifice and resurrection, subverting/ defiling the resurrection of Jesus. The angels of the book of Enoch were jealous of God creating humanity, and his plan to use as to incarnate through, so were they attempting to create their own dark method of resurrection to beat him by inseminating their own DNA into his creation and prevent him being able to reincarnate and create their own existential Lovecraftian messiah? This is similar to Anne Rice's twist that vampirism was a satanic subversion of Christ’s Communion, drink from me and you shall live forever.
The Last Post about the MURAL is kind of Off-Topic... but it can relate to the OT...
As the Theory that XenomorphAwakening is implying is that maybe there is some ANCIENT Organism that was a Civilization that Predates the Eggs on the Derelict and LV-223 etc. And i think that YES you could apply that, in which case the Post i made prior could APPLY to the Engineers wishing to USE/EXPERIMENT or Re-Create the said Ancient Races DNA... for maybe the Purpose i proposed?
"Who created them [the Engineers]?"
I forgot to mention Hox that a Mural does-not always have to Worship Gods, many Ancient Cultures would leave Murals, Paintings and Statues etc... to also give Appreciation and worship to other Animals/Beings that HOLD a Great Importance to those who Create the Murals etc.
And so if the MURAL is a Indication of Worship for something that could BENEFIT them, to make them more GODLIKE or a Attempt at Resurrection that would also be a Good Reason for the Mural. But then the Engineers like to SHOW-OFF what they Create by having Murals and Statues so it could be them SIMPLY showing their Achievements.
This HOWEVER... does not rule out the Mural being Expanded on to indeed showcase some kind of RACE that was Once the Gods of the Engineers, be that their Creators or merely their Enslavers.
The Organism in the MURAL looks more like this Concept from Prometheus. (well prior to Prometheus)

I think maybe with the OT you could introduce something that is NOT quite our Xenomorph, as it appears the Prequels/Ridley Scott idea is the Xenomorph is merely a Engineered Bio-Weapon.
James Cameron saw them as a Ancient Natural Species but then IF we got to see the ALIEN HOME-WORLD that Cameron had Envisioned its a case of WOULD they had been Portrayed as in ALIENS or shown they came from some kind of Civilization etc?
@Nathan
I was going to chat about that in Response to what Hox had put... so here it goes.
I assume when you both TALK about the Mural then you mean this one?

This Mural itself is a LITTLE on the Ambiguous Side but some Fans can Conclude its a GOD because of the Christ like Pose.
Now when we look at WHY it is that Christ is depicted often in the Cruciform Pose and Worshiped as such it is NOT really in Reflection to him being GOD... but it is to Acknowledge that he SACRIFICED his LIFE for the Immortality of Mankind (so we are allowed a After-Life after Death for his Worshipers).
There is some Significance of the ALTAR and Originally it had the Sacrificial Bowl and NOT a Green Crystal (This was added Post Shooting). So i look at this MURAL at a Sacrifice.... for some GREATER Course or something they WISHED to Achieve or Obtain..... Therefor i look at it as being either...
1) The Engineers desire this Mural, and they Self-Sacrifice themselves to become or Obtain the LIFE-FORM that is Depicted in the Mural.
2) The Engineers see a Perfection in this LIFE-FORM and as Genetic Engineers they Sacrifice this Organism to Obtain its DNA/Traits to Further Perfect themselves or their Creations.
When i Consider that the Altar had the Sacrificial Bowl, and we look at what this Represented/Provided. Then if we look at ALIEN: ENGINEERS to decode what we see. With Alien Engineers the Sacrificial Goo was Scarabs that had Consumed a Engineer and THUS they Stored the Engineers DNA which we then see ONE of these Scarabs Bite a Primitive Woman... this is 12'000 Years ago. This Primative Woman then goes through some Changes her DNA is being Changes..
The SET UP seems to imply that the Passing of the Engineers DNA onto this Primitive is what led to a EVOLUTION and this is HOW we got to Modern Mankind.
We Latter see the Scarabs in URNS that Fifield would knock over and ONE of these then BITES him.... only he is Evolved/Mutated to some HYBRID that has Xenomorph Traits and Acid Blood... we can IMPLY here that maybe something RELATED to the Xenomorph was Sacrificed by the Scarabs so they can CONSUME its (Xeno-Related Organism) DNA to then PASS ON to anything those Scarabs that are Stored in the Urns came into Contact with.
So taking that on Board and looking at the Original Altar in Context to the Mural then i would assume the Engineers had Encountered something that they then TRIED to obtain and UTILIZE its DNA/Traits for some Purpose.
When we look at the Pitch that Jon Spaights had made for the Prequel, he had Envisioned the Engineers as a Ancient Humanoid Species of Creators who had Created/Evolved our Species. These Engineers had Genetically Evolved themselves to a Point they LOST the Ability to Procreate but they also had Engineered themselves to LIVE for Many Thousands of Years.
They were however NOT really Immortal, the Engineers had been trying to Obtain a Higher Level of Existence beyond the Constraints of the Mortal Body.... they had been ATTEMPTING to Transcend themselves to beings of Energy who can Transcend between the Multiverse.
So it seemed their Agenda was the same as Peter Weylands, looking for WAYS to Extend their Life, then to go Further and Find some kind of Immortality.
In Context to all of this we may have a Solution/Answer, if there was a ANCIENT ORGANISM who had a Life-Cycle where the END would lead to RESURRECTION (via a Genetic Transfer of their Soul/Memories to the Egg Morph). If something like this Existed then this would give a VERY GOOD reason for the Engineers Experiments... to OBTAIN this Secret/Ability could GRANT them a Pseudo Resurrection/Immortality.
We have Evidence of this with RIPLEY 8 that the Xeno-DNA can lead to a Pseudo Resurrection
Such a PLOT/IDEA would Uplift the Franchise because we would see that Ultimately with RIPLEY and the Experiments on her DNA then SHE had Achieved maybe what the Engineers had Attempted and Failed...
The other Irony for the Engineers and Weyland is that David was teased that he has NO SOUL.... when in Actual Fact he could be the ONLY being who has a SOUL (his Memories etc can be Transferred to another Body).
Back to the MURAL what we had However is some of those working on the Mural/Project had said that it Represents the Deacon, but its left Ambiguous to HOW/WHY.
If you look at the Easter Eggs (Face Hugers)also the Fresco and the Engineers being Genetic Scientists and Creators and if we look at say what David was doing on Planet 4 then we could maybe Conclude the Engineers had been Experimenting to Create something and when they achieved the DEACON they saw its Perfection and they WISHED to use its DNA to Evolve Life instead of Engineer DNA
"sometimes to create, one must first destroy"
@Xenotron Stop being ridiculous. I didn't make this post for some sort of willy waving contest.
And to anyone thinking Alien was original... You are deluded.
I still like both movies and I still think Prometheus is the better movie. I went to the cinema to see the 40th anniversary of Alien, a lot of young people were laughing at some parts of it. One part where they eject the dead body into space and the other when the alien sticks out its hand, among others. "Those youngsters just don't understand what a good movie is".
@BigDave: I'm interested to know why the MURAL as a GOD-like being the Engineers Worship doesn’t sit quite right for you (it doesn't for me either)?
And a happy new year to you.
What has been fascinating this year is to see the themes of the work echoed in others.
Soji in Picard has the same dilemma as Elizabeth; the guardian weighs Captain Georgiou in the same way that my guardian’s tests David. But most pleasing Discovery has slowed down and Burnham thinks and talks about her experiences in the same way as Elizabeth.
However, watching the prologue to Covenant in the fan adjusted combination reminded me how close David was to the truth "every step is fraught with tragedy, power is an illusion, they are false gods." As David makes those remarks you can see the Nativity the birth of a unique personality with a character pointing to a hole in the roof and through it can be seen... Paradise where all the answers lay.
I have begun my original work I just need to discipline myself but inevitably in some ways, this year is distracting and so the occasional rewrite to a chapter of P: F.G. comes more easily. That is not a bad thing as I learn hopefully to become a better writer.
Thank you as always for your enthusiasm.
You don’t need a locked down computer to browse this site. As with all websites, use your common sense and watch out for suspicious messages inviting you to install or update software on your computer.
One thing I would say is that alien-covenant.com needs its own TLS certificate for its login page. Whilst not being a simple thing to exploit, a man-in-the-middle attack can sniff any password that you enter in a login page if there is no padlock symbol being shown in the browser.
How do we know it is really fixed? There can be a lot of hidden code in any of the links.....
Key loggers, everything bad! I hope Chris had a back up of the site without the malicious code. Then he put the back up in the place of the site without there being any chance there could be any bad code on the site right now.
Dare I say it people watch your computers for while and reload your operating systems. I am not sure as to why these hackers would just put a password harvesting malware on a blog like this so it makes no F! IN G sense.
I think we have a more involved thing going on. That being said just watch your computers and anything you doing on your client computer at your houses could be compromised by doing anything at this site.
So like everything in life it is a risk. Best practice is to surf to this website only from a computer that nothing can happen to...in other words you have no sensitive information on that system. This was meant to look like a novice attacked the site....however, with pros you would have never known anything was different in the first place and that is the only reason why I am even making this post right now....however I could be wrong so everyone lets work together and be vigilant and report anything wrong instantly to the admins!!!!!!
Dillion is an interesting and rich character whose redemption arc was stunted in the cinematic cut.
The Assembly Cut has some great extra scenes that better hint at his personality and the Brotherhood he was forging.
They were all outcast, but here they had company and a place, no matter who they had been and what they had done.
It was Dillon's way of clinging to the hope that he was not beyond redemption, and not so far gone from civilization that even the worst of the worst inmates would not accept him. This is projected onto other inmates as a 'Code amongst thieves'
Absolutely, BigDave. No matter what happens with Disney at the helm, the back story of the Engineers and their history will always be there to be pondered. Dr Shaw asked the question herself: "Who created them [the Engineers]?"
To my mind, a few scenes in Prometheus give a very clear indication that the Engineers are a religious sort who revere their origins. The drinking of the sacrificial goo in a religious ceremony; the monk-like attendants; the "font" and sculpted mural in the Head Room featuring a very xeno-like form. These are the kinds of thing you see in a church. But rather than kneeling to the power of Christ, the Engineers look up to the form of the Xenomorph. You wouldn't praise something you created yourself. Ergo, the xeno, or the technology that allows it to exist, is something that pre-dates the Engineers.
So, why not? A creature and/or race of beings much older than the Engineers. Perhaps billions of years old from a time when stars with heavy elements began to seed the cosmos with the building blocks of life.
What if that race still existed somewhere, perhaps in another galaxy? All manner of havoc could be being wreaked.
@Hox
Indeed ;) for the Most Part we see Nut being associated with Protecting the Dead, Ensuring a Safe Transition to the AFTER-LIFE.
Also the Derelict looks like some of the Egyptian Funeral Barges

So we have a Influence Aesthetically but is there more to it than that? If so then HR Giger maybe had some idea that the SHIPS were in someway a VESSEL to allow for some Species to Attain a After-Life
Which when you look at ALIEN DC and well go back to the STARBEAST idea then this is kind of what we see, the EGG MORPH is a Rebirth!
This is something i have brought up a bit in the Past and also this Year. With the STARBEAST Plot there are NO Adults remaining NOT on the World that had the Temple of the Young/Egg/Spores.... if the Starbeast are a Species that do DIE... but at the END of their Life-Cycle they can EGG-MORPH a Host... to allow for RESURRECTION.
Then the EGGS being Carried on the Derelict and the unused MURAL by HR Giger would Certainly Connect to some of the Death Mythos of Ancient Egypt etc.
Which is WHY i have mentioned before that Alien Resurrection could be a KEY to a Expanded Alien Mythology/History. You see with RIPLEY 8 we have in essence our Ellen Ripley being Resurrected with some of her Memories.. this is due to the XENOMORPH in some way.
So if the Starbeast can Egg-Morph a Host and this Egg can HOLD the Genetic Memory of the Starbeast then THIS would indeed give the Species Resurrection and a AFTER-LIFE/IMMORTALITY of Sorts..
For a Race like the Engineers and indeed Mankind then HOW/WHY this Happens (Starbeast Resurrection) would be the HOLY GRAIL to the Engineers/Mankind a Possible Solution to CHEAT DEATH.
And so in Context to the OT... then YES i think you can Incorporate this to EXPAND the Franchise/Plot by having a Primordial Alien Race that are connected to the Xenomorph, a Race who are Ancient and Advanced.
A Race where the Technology of the Derelict and Engineers Advancement had came from... maybe the Engineers were ONCE Enslaved or Engineered by this Species for a Function... but they eventually Rebelled and Overthrown their Masters and then STOLE their Technology?
"Larger Down"
LOL i mean Town....
Certainly i think the Earth Setting and LIKELY to be say 2030-2050 would be that the BUDGET would not NEED to be so Big.
The Biggest Concern i always had was CONFLICT... but i think if we looked at AVP and say the Entire Temple Complex was Totally Destroyed so NOTHING can be Recovered then this AVP Movie would NOT go and Conflict with ALIEN too much, on the other Hand if AVP had the Xenomorphs make it to a Larger Down or City then YES you are going to Conflict with the ALIEN Franchise..
I know the AVP movies are NOT considered Canon, but the Point Remains Valid... in that IF the ALIEN TV Show is set on a Military/Scientific Research Outpost where it can be COVERED UP compared to the Xenomorphs making it to a Large Town or City.... then it WOULD-NOT go and Conflict the Franchise too much.
I think the SETTING is a Mistake but i Understand its a way to do a TV Show and bring back the Xenomorph on a SMALLER BUDGET.
For Example a TV Show for 3-4 Hours or a 2-3 Hour Movie that is about Peter Weyland after the 2023 TED TALK and ENDS with the Prologue from Alien Covenant would NOT cost anything like say Prometheus or Alien Covenant had done.
You could get this done for like 25-35M
Back to the OT
I think the Route they are going is to Introduce the ALIEN for Cheaper... and IF the TV Show does well and Fans are into the Xenomorph and may want some other things then DISNEY can Gauge if a 2nd TV Show is Warranted and can RISK a Higher Budget.
Certainly there is quite a bit you can Cover with a TV Series, and YES maybe you could Cover some Loose/Ends and Conclusions.
I think the BUDGET would play a Large Part, the more ALIENY we go (Alien Worlds, Space Travel/Ships and Xenomorphs) the HIGHER the Budget requirement for those Effects...... This is LIKELY why the Hulu/FX TV Show would be SET on Earth in the NOT TOO Distant Future... Saves on Budget for Effects.
I think regarding the conclusion to Davids Story... IF they decide it is to be Considered as CANON then i think a NOVEL would be the BEST Solution. This does-not mean that Future TV Shows or Movies cant go and Reference our David and the Events of the Prequels.
R.I.P David Giler
I think it may be Sad that he will not be around to see his ALIEN V idea come to Fruition (thats if it will anyway).
He and Walter Hill did have a BIG impact on what we call ALIEN and the Franchise as they introduce us to the Corporate Greed/Conspiracy Aspect and the Synthetics/Robots and also the Notion of Biological Alien Warfare.
At least some Subjects that took us to the Dodgy Log-in can NOW be Safely Accessed... Cheers Chris ;)
Hope everyone had a Great and Safe Holiday Period ;)
Yep. He's interviewed on Alien 3 's quadrilogy special features. If I remember right he walked from the movie because the producers were pushing for the prison setting. I forgot he did Die Hard 2, thanks for reminding me Thoughts_Dreams.
If I remember right he eventually walked from the set after Fox installed yet another producer. I can't remember this guys at the moment but I know he infuriated Giler and other production members because he started saying what they could and couldn't do due to budget. I got to check my quadrilogy special features.
This is interesting news for sure, but I’m a bit sceptical about the story being set on earth. On one hand it could be done really well with, (depending on the series’ intended direction of course) - smaller scale horror that takes place in a distant laboratory/factory/outpost far away from populated areas.
On the other hand it could also mean that we’ll see aliens running around (even in broad daylight) in way to familiar and home-cozy places that are also perfect for advertising. Aliens appearing in a McDonald’s restaurant anyone? New Triple Cheese Habanero Burger™️ available now!
Sorry, got a bit carried away there..
Anyway: dirty, dark, isolated, distant, twisted and/or otherworldly environments played a huge part in the horror factor of the Alien films. I hope we’ll get to see some creeping horror again.
In a TV show they can do everything. They can Tie the knots between each movie of the franchise, at any time they choose.
For instance, in two episodes, they can give a proper ending to David story, with Ridley Scott directing, all of this under the form of a flashback.
Well, in alien 3 and 4, the primary goal of the company was having a Queen. In alien 3, Ripley Kills it and, in alien 4, the cloning experience goes wrong, because of the mixed DNA that origins an hybrid queen, that firstly gives birth to xenos and then to a newborn.
They could bring eggs from lv-426, where is a "Royal Embryo" included, to earth and then begin to create their army of xenomorphs. This, assuming that Ripley and Bishop didn't destroyed all the eggs on lv-426. Hell breaks loose on earth and there you have the main story of the first season.
Renny Harlin directed a Die Hard-movie https://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/renny_harlin.
He was also involved with Alien 3 for a while.
https://www.ign.com/articles/2001/04/27/interview-with-renny-harlin
You can read more about his involvement in Alien 3 here:
https://alienexplorations.blogspot.com/2014/05/renny-harlin-alien-3.html
Hopefully it is a good page.
You can probably watch him comment on Alien 3 if there is a documentary on the making of the movie.
