BiomechanicPrometheus ForumSpace Jockeys SignalJan 2, 2012
Good point Ghost.
I think the signal could be human but transmitted on alien technology. David looks like he learned how to control the star charts on an alien ship in the trailer. Doesn't seem like it would be a stretch than to send a message over the radio. The signal is an acoustic beacon, it's a code just like binary and it may be automatically encrypted for security. It is going to sound very strange whether it was was a human voice or an alien one. Try taking the binary information stored in your mp3 which are a series of 1s (ons} and 0s (offs) slow it down, convert the voltage and play it over analog equipment. You will get a very weird bunch of acoustic square wave patterns.

GS,
There are a couple of scenario's for this. The SJ's could be using a frequency that we don't use nor monitor in regular space. It could be a sub-space message that only the nostromo was directed to monitor to find the signal. This is Sci-Fi we could use anything regarding signal manipulation. Almost every star emits waves of some sort on every frequency. Which ones do we or should we monitor for transmission? The only one I can think of is 1.00794Ghz which is the atomic weight of hydrogen. This is the only signal that would catch our eye in any signal.
Just an opinion.

Rick

As a note of curiousity, why wasn't the engineers distress call ever answered? If this bioweapons cargo was important to their species, why was it left there. If we intercepted the signal than surely the engineer's species could have gotten the transmission as well. Oddly you aren't going to see the homeworld of the engineer, so the reveal is only going to be a couple of pages of what was potentially an entirely new experience. Building on this premise how can they make a sequel, the more that humanity learns about this derelict and it's crew/pilots the harder it is to keep it a secret. The signal itself could be picked up by any company, priviteer, exploration vessel, probe. The less we actually knew about the signal, its meaning, origins, intended recipients the more plausible it was. The mystery was tantalizing, sadly an easy explanaton is only going to crumble an elegant yet ghastly house of cards audiences and fans have built in the last three decades.

Could it be that we destroyed the dinosaurs and the Engineers came to clean up their mess with us and thin the herd of sheeple and force our evolution to the next level?
ReplyIGIGOUPrometheus ForumSpace Jockeys, Aliens and PrometheusJan 2, 2012
In short I belive that the Sjs and Engineers are two seperate species. Engineers being our creators which we resemble. And then the Sjs who are in battle with the engineers for the "vial" of creation, which us humans just happened to stumble on accidentaly.
The Sj head is discovered in the Engineers "Temple" it has a mouth and eyesockets. It is not a helmet. In view of the trailer, laying under a xray.
This is a battle between the Engineers and Sjs that the crew just happened to stumble on. Lets say for arguments sake that the Sjs killed the Engineer and sabotaged the "Crossant Space Ship" not knowing it was infefcted by "Humanity" . On its flight the Sj got infected by the creature, burst out of his ribs and started to reproduce. Tadah!! the xenomorph we all love is born!
ReplySpartacusPrometheus ForumSpace Jockeys, Aliens and PrometheusJan 2, 2012
I have stated in another thread somewhere that I think this idea in particular is superlative and "The Snorkster" should have been one of the writers for Prometheus!!!
65 million years ago, unhappy that the natural course of evolution on Earth had not sired the predestined intelligent species they had planned, the Space Jockey’s deployed Xenomorph eggs on Earth, subsequently eliminating over three quarters of the indigenous life on the planet. Once all suitable hosts had been exhausted and only the Xenomorph Eggs remained, the Space Jockey’s retrieved the eggs and destroyed all evidence of the Xenomorph infestation. Over the next 65 million years, the indigenous life on Earth adapted and recovered, eventually giving rise to Humans.
Isn't that just awesome writing ?
I love it !!!
And Everything it would imply !!!

Sparky,
I can agree with that. Man I really hope they rewrote the Spaights script for Prometheus. I went and saw The Darkest Hour. Not impressed. Spaights did the screen play and it seemed like a rip-off from Skyline, Predator and a TV Series that had yellow stuff falling from the sky (I can't remember the name of it) after a hurricane. The Aliens we're invisible (like Predators), had some sort of organic matter disentigrating shield around them that turned people to dust, and they all land on strategic locations (like Skyline). To mine the minerals from our planet. Really? There are plenty of other planets to strip minerals from that won't put up a fight for resources.

no im not totally sold on that terraforming thing ...the fire can be the possibility to manipulate DNA and/or the willing to know more ( Prometheus + Pandora )
I dont think the terraforming process is so "appetible" to be the main goal in a movie ...and terraforming is subjective ..what can be terraforming for us can be destruction for another race . So is not very plausible that the SJ race have the same needs of us and so their Spacejockeyplanetforming can be very different from Terraforming . I think this will remain a background process but not the main "fire" of the movie .
Of course i can be totally wrong
ReplyRickPrometheus ForumBuilding better worlds.Jan 2, 2012
Hey EP,
That was tossed around alot previously. Now that the trailer has been released though I think it leans more towards being able to manipulate a biosphere not terraform a rock. If they SJ's can fly spaceships why couldn't they alter orbits of small object like frozen asteroids and cause them to crash into a planetoid for water or methane to help build an atmosphere. Terraforming should be easy for them you would think. But then again if they know about our greedy, expansionist and conniving ways and we started terraforming other planets and expanding our borders. We could pose an even larger problem to them than that of the xeno's. We could become the BORG in a few hundred years with mech-bio interfaces and a xeno hive mind mentality. :P

Rick
ReplyEngineer Prototype - Model GAJ84Prometheus ForumBuilding better worlds.Jan 2, 2012
True Frantz. Maybe the ability to manipulate DNA etc & terraforming could be part of the same tech? We could both be right, or both be wrong, or maybe even both right and wrong. The one thing that is buggin me the most though is what the hell did David pull out of that urn? Is it bioformer? a protoform face hugger? Life seeds? or something completely different?
ReplyEngineer Prototype - Model GAJ84Prometheus ForumBuilding better worlds.Jan 2, 2012
I agree Rick. Personally I think Weyland Yutani is far worse than the xeno's, Engineers, Predators or anything else for that matter. To quote Ripley when comparing the Xeno's to WY "You dont see them fucking each other over for a damn percentage"
ReplyEngineer Prototype - Model GAJ84Prometheus ForumBuilding better worlds.Jan 2, 2012
Wether its the fire or not frantz (which it very well could be), whatever is in that urn is going to play a very important part.
ReplyRickPrometheus ForumBuilding better worlds.Jan 2, 2012
I think what Fassbender pulls out is a bio-catalyst. Why else hold the assembly of smaller ampules in an organic slurry? Much like pulling smaller nuke warheads out of a much larger warhead. Same effect so the theory is sound. You mix the ampules up one has DNA, another RNA, another amino acids, and etc. Throw a single cell organism (capable of mutation) into the mix and walla. They load the smaller ampules up in a larger ampule load it into a penis shaped gun and launch it at a planet (ovum) and inseminate the ocean of a planet with life.
ReplyEngineer Prototype - Model GAJ84Prometheus ForumBuilding better worlds.Jan 2, 2012
That is one sick theory. I like it!
ReplyCervantesPrometheus ForumBuilding better worlds.Jan 2, 2012
I like your notion of an 'ampule gun' Rick! But whether or not it fires 'ampules', I really hope that the 'spacejockey seat' is indeed a 'gunners seat' of some sort. This should make for some great imagery in the movie if it is.

Hey guys I just had an epiphone.
What if its not terraforming or biosphering a planet. What if its theft of knowledge, I mean of the most fundamental kind. We all know every life form has a type of genetic memory. What if we stole how to make xeno's from the engineers and infected one to steal its limitless knowledge through the xeno. Why else would the company be so hell bent on getting it, knowledge. It has been our largest currency even today. I mean really who are we gonna wipe out with it realistically its not ourselves. We can neutron bomb ourselves now and be done with it (no residual radiation left over). What other purpose would the xeno serve? Theft of the Engineers knowledge through genetic storage and transference of genetic memory to the xeno then us capturing a/the xeno and us finding a way to transfer or download the knowledge from the xeno like a hostile thumb drive.
I'm taking things a bit far but this is supposed to be futuristic they are already talking today about near future organic storage devices that can hold 1000 times more data than anything we have now thats mechanical.

Fact, RS is not going to referrance AVP in Prometheus. Therefore this mission represents a voyage into the unknown for the crew. They were obviously instructed to bring back whatever they could. Oddly I suppose the first FTL extrasolar system voyage by mankind doesn't need to account for mass, or the use of oxygen as the reps for Weyland apparently don't breathe being synthetics. While I like the insidious nature of stealing racial memories via a xenomorph this film represents a first encounter with a Weyland that is more than three decades earlier than that portrayed in Alien. Without any of the data from the AVP films they are going in with only what knowledge they were able to ascertain from the dig site where they discovered the coordinates to this alien planet where only the promise of finding something warrants an expenditure that would bankrupt entire national economies. Even microsoft couldn't finance this trip to Zeta Reticulae, so obvously the world economy is going to turn around in seven decades, just hold on people things are going to get better!
ReplyRickPrometheus ForumBuilding better worlds.Jan 2, 2012
Hey GS,
In this thread I am not referencing AvP or any of the prequels. I am using current knowledge. Genetic Memory is real and transferable. Take this from a hypothetical to a sci-fi possbility. Genetic memory retention from one generation to the next. No more losing our Einsteins, Mozarts, or Copernicus. Say this is something the SJ's learned how to do to advance their knowledge to the next level without degredation of data? This would be the biggest thing since Hot Apple Pie. I mean really...think about it, its mind blowing. We learn how to build atom bombs and the same guy given another 30 to 2000 years could build something that much bigger. The ends and abilities would be mind boggling. That kind of intuition and enginuity is never heard of but once in a life time and then being able to keep it alive and learning. Man the possibilities jusst don't end.

Rick
ReplyRobotpoPrometheus ForumBuilding better worlds.Jan 2, 2012
Rick, I think it's possible the film will be a combination of your and Engineer Prototype's ideas - that the "fire" in this case, will be the Engineer's knowledge and power allowing them to create and "bioform" life on any level - in terms of organisms, or entire planets. These beings are basically "gods" - so, our desire to obtain the god's power to elevate ourselves to being "Gods and Engineers of Space" (through whatever biological matter is to be found in the "ampules") could be what the film's about, from what we know so far.
ReplyRobotpoPrometheus ForumBuilding better worlds.Jan 2, 2012
Another thought: could Weyland's desire for alien biotech to give him the lead in the race to "build better worlds" be the impetus for financing the Prometheus mission in the first place? Obviously, the sod, as Engineer succinctly put it, would want some sort-of financial payoff for his investment! ;)
ReplyGuestPrometheus ForumBuilding better worlds.Jan 2, 2012
I like the concept of genetic memoery. I still believe, as I've said in other posts, that there has to be something deeper than a Xeno creature.
1) I just can't see how humans would utilize the creature as a weapon. Hard to control. They are dangerous, and aren't really that hard to kill. Remeber small arms fire will kill them. I will grant you they would be THE most dangerous animal if they were released into earths Eco system; and it's no telling what might "evolve" from doing do, but its still an animal. So the evil corporation must be after something "deeper" that deals with the creatures biology, technology or whatever the heck it is an came from.
2) I just can't see the Xeno creature as an effective weapon for the Engineers or SJ's. I know people disagree. If they created it with this unknown technology, they would be able to kill it. Sending it to earth, unless it was intended to arrive with only swords in the hands of man, wouldn't destroy the planet or humans. Granted big problem, but not end of the world, unless there is something worse with the creature or it's biology/technology that we don't know about yet. Now could it have gotten out of control fort the engineers, caused accidents or possibly cause some catastrophic event for their species - maybe. I bet human scientists have created some virus strains that we can kill. Similar situation maybe. But again it's not the creature, it's something beneath its skin that is far more dangerous and disturbing.
One final thought. I know the term "bio-mechanical" has been thrown around a lot. But other than it being the artistic theme of Geigers Art, what evidence is there that the Xeno is some kind of Borg/cyborg bio-techno hybrid? What does that even mean? Combo of metal/organic living tissue? Something beyond carbon based? I bring this up because from what I've seen, the Xeno breath, bleed, reproduce, and die. They have flesh, saliva, blood, skin, whatever form it actually is. What we don't know are what those tissue/things are made of in the creature itself. Unknown element? Something beyond DNA? DNA + something else? For all we know, the Xeno creature is some kind of microscopic composition of nano-robots simulating what we are used to thinking of as LIFE. But really the human body isn't different than a "high" developed robot in a grand sense meaning if you could simulate every organ, neuron, cell or dare I say DNA, chromosomes etc with metal, self repairing microprocessors, and synthetic blood, would that "thing" be alive? Artificial Intelligence if we create it, is it alive? If the computer learns, and the "brain" feels does it not have a soul if it's made of silicone? Now take that to another level with a combination of both carbon and silicone, artificial and living, synthetic and organic fused together. Is that Bio-mechanical? We don't know what this Xeno or Xeno technology is, or even if the alien goop was created. Maybe they found it, and tried to comtrol it. Maybe the engineers, we're trying to play god and really messed up! I hope we find out, and explore these sorts of "alien" concepts. Pun intended.
There is a good chance the humans won't be Prometheus. There is just as good of a chance that the Engineers, and SJ' attempted to discover the meaning of life, and started messing with things they shouldn't have, and destroyed their own civilization. They are now having their livers chewed up for eternity! And.... Humans are about to make the same mistake....... genetic engineering, cloning anyone?
ReplyArchEtechPrometheus ForumBuilding better worlds.Jan 2, 2012
I like the idea of genetic memory.
We think of life as tissue, blood, cells, DNA.
We say that a robot with synthetics is not alive. (Some might argue)
What if humans are a robot that something else created but used carbon, and cells, and DNA that was their form of computers or technology. Are we then not alive? Meaning we aren't even part of natural evolution. We were synthesized? Disturbing.
ReplyEngineer Prototype - Model GAJ84Prometheus ForumI'm pretty sure this confirms there are separate DerelictsJan 2, 2012
An exerpt from "The Genius of the Derelict"
An overall view of the derelict's operation can now be hypothesized: According to the novelization by Dean Alan Scott ([11])[1], the derelict has been dead since at least one million years prior to Nostromo's landing. This lends credence to the hypothesis that whether there are more like it or not, the particular device/entity appears to be amongst the oldest organisms in existence, having extensive knowledge of science and technology to the point of managing to grow itself into a self-sufficient bio-mechanical state in the form of a ship, complete with offensive weapons and having the ability of interstellar travel[2]. As it travels, it simply "scans" entire star-systems looking for planets to infect. This could be achieved for example by scanning light sources for the presence of the spectrum of organic molecules via its telescoping device. The presence of organic molecules in star spectra usually betrays super-giant stars of class K and M, hence is a good indicator of the presence of older and more advanced civilizations around these stars. Once it finds life, it simply travels and lands on the corresponding planet, waiting for extraterrestrial life to come and examine it. In that sense, it resembles a giant spider, weaving its web on every planet it visits, akin to a giant uterus which gives birth to death.
