If David DID know about Covenant, then why did he act somewhat surprised, though very excited, to hear of the colonists back on the main ship when the drop ship crew first spoke with him inside of the Engineer citadel?
I think this whole film was just the beginning of Davids brilliant and intricate plan (which may or may not work out)
The work in the lab was training for what is to come. He has been cross breeding and hybridising and will also have found the knowledge and somehow practised this, around the Embryos, ready for the big day when he plays for real.
Which will be A:Awakening no doubt.
David may of hatched this whole plan with prior knowledge of The Covenant colony mission. Both Weyland missions, Covenant was in the planning stages before Prometheus embarked. Also the novel lets us know David is in contact with WY and MAY of always been ?
I watched it last night and there is around a 14 second gap from the shot were we see David (Walter) looking back towards Walter (straight after the fight) to when David as Walter appears into the shot were Daniels and Lope are trying to head for the Cargo ship.
I am wondering what David done in those seconds off screeen ? Possibly swallowed the embryos ?
I think David has a plan so intricate that he had the Embryos on him already. I think he caused the shock burst knowing Covenant was in that part of space. Everything else was just his plan coming together.
EDIT: Dont forget Walter had only one hand and Davids human qualities may of helped him just that tiny bit to overcome Walter in the fight. Plus David had the advantage of knowing he would be in combat that day and could of prepped .
Also there is a tiny tiny chance David and Walter teamed up together ? lol but it is Fox so who can be sure. Ambiguity hey.
but he did, or else he wouldn't have boarded the Covenant.
You are not alone, the chestbursting over dinner holds a certain iconic fascination. Actually, I frequently do dramatic reenactments of chesbursting scenes for the entertainment of my husband and friends, throwing myself to the floor or across the coffee table, sticking out my tongue and thrashing about.
I do feel like there's a sort of ethical imperative to chose eaten, but chest-burst is a classic and deep down I feel like it's actually my first choice.
(And you're right, getting eaten doesn't look particularly quick or painless, Karine made it look pretty horrifying! Chestburst might actually be quicker).
Maybe if the only other people besides me on the ship are people like Burke and that weird pony-tailed scientist guy from Resurrection, whom I wouldn't feel too bad about unleashing a xeno on :P
The face hugger is a metaphor of the female genitalia, just to remind us how we once came out to this world violently by being grabbed from the head by two cold white hands (gloves).
Time travel is not implied in the movie, if you mean that at these speeds time bends and passes by slower yes this is a fact. If you run at the speed of light (impossible) and stopped instantly (impossible too) after thousands of Earthly years if you were still alive you would see yourself coming!
Only one connection, 'do androids dream of electric sheep?'. Can A.I. become self aware and develop human traits?
Very interesting topic! I had a while ago the idea that the murals in Prometheus Headroom could be actions that could happen in the future. You remember the creature and the engineer-looking guy. They have to be of some meaning^^
@IRapture
I agree, but perhaps not about David sacrificing himself. He seems to be too much self-centred for that?
@Batchpool
Nice theory.
Kethol, the original poster, is basically wrong in a lot of his theory. There is no evidence at all of different forms of the black goo. When Damon Lindelof re-wrote the original "Engineers" script from Jon Spaihts, he replaced the idea of "scarabs" (tiny alien insects which suck DNA from one victim and implant it in another) with the idea of the black goo pathogen. The reason we see the black goo having different effects at various points in Prometheus and Covenant is because of DOSAGE levels. Different levels of goo ingested by the victim do different speeds of damage. Holloway had only a drop in his drink, thus he mutated much more slowly than Fifield, who breathed in a lot of goo. The Engineer at the start of Prometheus, drinks a whole cup of it at once, and the overwhelming reaction causes his DNA to break down. In Covenant we see it rained down on Engineers in vast quantities, this causes death and seemingly instant mutation and parasite birth from some victims.
It is all about how much of the goo they interact with, not different kinds of goo. Also, when David says that the virus "took many forms and was extremely mutable" he is talking about how the virus mutated itself within the victim. It will mutate in order to get past the victim's body defences (the novel states), and then cause the victim to mutate. This is not about different types of goo, but the goo mutating itself into different forms and then mutating the victims body. The Covenant novel states that the black goo becomes airborne after infecting the victim..so that it can float off like any regular virus and infect another victim. This is what we see at the start of Prometheus when the Engineer is dissolving. The black goo virus is floating out of him, becoming airborne, to seek out a new victim. The black goo likes to be airborne so it gets more victims, than from just sitting in a jar.
Also, the spores we see in Covenant are not the same thing as the black goo at all. They are spores from an infected fungus type life form. If the spores were black goo...they would cause the victim to birth some kind of parasite, or trilobite etc., but no they cause the victim to birth a neomorph. These spores are acting like mini trilobites or facehuggers. They are the second stage of life for an infected creature:
Black goo infection ---> Mutation ---> Victim births a parasite ---> Parasite attacks a 2nd victim ---> 2nd victim births a "morph" (neomorph or deacon etc.).
That worm seen in Holloway's eye, I think is from a hammerpede egg, which was laid in the black goo by those worms that we see wiggling about in it. The worms somehow crawled in to the urns, got mutated and laid eggs in there. The eggs hatch out into hammerpedes, and that's what we see in Holloway's eye, a baby hammerpede. Maybe Holloway managed to get it out of his eye and kill it, so it didn't reach full size.
It really is quite simple and the original poster is just complicating things with his own canon and complex theory. This is meant to be entertainment for people.. not some complex science lecture to understand on PhD levels. The simpler the explanation of events, the more likely. I agree that those wasp things in the amber are the same thing as the spore motes which we see coming from the fungal pods. I think those pods come from the black goo infecting local fungus organisms, rather than just spawning from the goo on it's own.
My own thesis here --> http://www.alien-covenant.com/topic/46223 explains what I think happened in David's experiment to create (or re-create in the novel) the Xenomorph. Long story short, David was splicing together infected egg cells from Shaw, with DNA from various neomorphs. I think this piece of David's art gives the game away, it shows a neomorph cell being merged with a mutated Shaw's cell -
I've got to get some use out of my Xbox One S (silly impulsive purchase) so, as long as it's got the extras, I'm going for 4K.
Why every alien movie from Ridley is approximately 2 hrs.People who never watched the prologue will be confused how David got his body.
Their main purpose is to look horrific!
it's fun to speculate, though. Many of Giger's paintings feature horrible or erotic subjects in a state of entrapment or bondage: terrifying yet entombed or massively constrained. The tubes fit into this scheme of things rather well.
Something that size growing anywhere in your chest cavity would put pressure on the lungs, causing great difficulty in breathing.
Loss of blood by any means leads to anaemia, for example, the embryo sapping blood from internal organs.
A crushed kidney would cause internal haemorrhaging but would not of itself cause blood to be vomited. My own two cents: by this time, the embryo is starting to burrow its way out, resulting in rupture and bleeding of the oesophagus.
Can you give a link to this video?I cant find it
The combination of screen size, distance and pixel resolution determines whether there's a noticeable difference or not. Check out the coloured 'optimal viewing distance' chart on this page. The lilac (1080p) zone represents HD movies.
Any closer than 11' to a 32" TV, and HD is better than DVD for you. These days, however, most screens sold are larger than this, which is another nail in the coffin for DVD.
also, the very first shot of the trailer is literally the same shot as the opening shot of alien covenant. an extreme closup of a bright blue eye.
here is a different theory. the tyrell corperatins androids evolved into engineers who then rose way aovie us.
also, the new trailer for blade runner 2049 just came out. her it is.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZOaI_Fn5o4
you may know that shot from the first trailer were it looks like there is an engineer in the glass container. well go to the 42 second mark and there is a shot just looming in on the possible engineer. coincidence. i think not.
Ridley couldnt even get the SJ size nowhere near the original size of 20+ feet. We instead got a 7 foot tall humanoid. I doubt they will be able to get a 15+ xeno like creature ok screen.
Unless they take cues from avp on the queen size.
Most of these are on set photos, not screen grabs, so some of the off set areas are visible in some photos.
It just does when and what Ridley wants it to do. Had they taken the bombing scene out would have been really bad, still love it no matter how confusing it is.
i was thinking that since the derilect ship was built engineer sized, it would sorta fit in with its surroundings, but i do see your point.
Do I spy the exterior of the set in the top right corner? This is a still from the movie right? I have to see if this goof made it into the final HD render!

My understanding for resolution is that there is no noticeable difference on most 32 inch TVs be it bd , hd or dvd.
Such a beautiful set. Going to feature this post.
I added a bunch more. There is definitely a lot to see.
IRAPTUS - Hahaha! I nearly choked on my water because of that, you goofball! Hahaha!
Something Real here are some survival moves for you to try...Australian style.
I recommend the Shark or Spider defence against a xeno

IRAPTUS - Excellent! That will give me more time to thrash, claw and bite back! ;)
negative. If you pick eaten, you're getting eaten slowly and alive for at least a little while.
Eggmorph and Burst is slow. Only fair lol XD
The second neo that burst out of Hallett's mouth did not have spines.

It did not appear to be as formed as the one that burst from Ledward's back.

Forehead kissed by a full grown xeno, and make it quick! lol!
Thats awesome Kethol, its good to see all this, as the film moving fast, could not take it all in.
David8 definetly was suffering from HAL9000 syndrome, and when the engineers come back and see what he has done, they are going to be mighty pissed.
Very true... if there was an Ultramorph, I would expect that it would be similar to the queen in Aliens, it just walked and was big. Regular Xenomorphs can crawl in and around ALL kinds of things. Of course, they are writers, so I would hope they could come up with something that works.
Good point sosse! If the writers can come up with something unique and original then I say do the Ultramorph, but the stealthness of the Xeno is what makes the Alien franchise scary (in addition to it's smarts). I don't want to see another Aliens ending similar to the queens part. I liked it in Aliens, but I want something different.
awesome selection, dark nebula
nice story! wish there was more
For what it’s worth, I’ll just throw in my two cents for how I think the dots could connect.
In Prometheus there was an outbreak which resulted in some of the Engineers/Space Jockey’s being infected. The result of this was that some looked like something had burst out from inside. The black goo as we know can be unpredictable in how it affects different organisms, but what burst out of the Space jockeys on LV223 could also have burst out of the ancient Space Jockey in the Derelict on LV426. This does not mean there were any xenomorphs on board the Derelict before it crashed.
The Derelict could have been on a mission to drop its payload on another planet like we saw David do in AC, but the goo broke its containment and the Space Jockey was killed as a result of an outbreak on board the Derelict, but not before putting down on LV426 and sending out a warning beacon.
We know that the outpost on LV223 is a known source of black goo, but probably not its origin, perhaps the Derelict is the secret to all this? However, if David needed to acquire more black goo, returning to LV223 might not be such a good idea, so perhaps he came across the Derelicts past history from somewhere, and might want to visit it to help acquire more goo and conduct more experiments.
If David is to be the one who creates the xenomorph in Alien, then I think the xenomorph can only be produced from humans. The rest of the Alien franchise would seem to point that what results from a face hugger takes on the characteristics of the host to some degree. I prefer to like this line of thinking, because what could be more perfect than an organism that is going to kill you, that is based on you. Maybe that is what makes it a perfect organism. The killing machine is based on the host.
If David did at some point gain knowledge of the Derelict, it might be possible that he puts eggs in the Derelict. In this case these eggs have been produced from the Derelicts cargo of goo which produces the xenomorph that we see in Alien. In other words David booby traps the Derelict, but long after the Derelict crashed, which would still present some air of mystery as to the full history of the Derelict.
If David is indeed connected too MUTHER, then this is how the Nostromo was eventually redirected. The end game is that the xenomorph we see in Alien is unique and one of a kind, and the ancient Space Jockey remains ancient. I say the xenomorph in Alien is unique because if Ash was connected to MUTHER, he did provide some words of caution. “Let’s not be too hasty, we don’t know anything about it.”
