MemberOvomorphDecember 24, 2011I have the 2 different anniversary DVDs where Ridley Scott did 2 lots of commentary.
From these, have 2 thoughts about the Aliean prequel that he wanted to do:
1) RS was inspired by 2001. The studio info for Prometheus implies that Mankind has found something about our Origins and sets out to explore the lead somewhere in space. This is the classic 2001 scenario. The plot's theme then will be a vision of who we are as a species and the higher intelligence that "created" us... the SJ or the "Alien"? Likewise HAL in 2001 has it's counterpart in the robots/androids in Alien.
Believe there will be strong comparisons (similarlities or contrasts) between 2001 and Prometheus.
(Note: in some of these discussion posts, some people are critical of 2001... all I can say is that I LOVE both movies and that Ridley Scott himself is a great fan. Think he will want to do "his" version of what happens when we meet our maker... from the studio blurb, it will not be pleasant).
2) In Alien, RS wanted the Alien creature to have a sensory (sexual?) attraction to the women. He did not get to show this is the final filming or edit. He says he wanted the Alien to be fascintaed by Ripley's naked skin - that was the original idea behind her undressing in the shuttle scene. The other unstated evidence was Lambert: she was fully clothed when attacked by the Alien, but her naked leg is shown when Ripley discovers her body (Parker and the other men were clothed). When they made Alien they (Dan O'Bannon, all the producers and RS) did not want to do a cliche shock/horror movie a la Roger Corman... However it can be a cheap cliche in a horror movie to have the attractive woman being "sexually" attacked... although that is also a classic device... think the shower scene in Psycho where the murdered woman was naked. All we know is that the lead in Alien is a sexually attractive woman (to RS, which is one reason he cast Sigourney he says) and in Prometheus we have 2 attractive women, one who is famous for sexually violent movie.
Believe in this movie version, SR will explore this aspect much further than he was allowed/able to do in the original Alien.
(Perhaps that's why he wanted a X classification for Prometheus?)
Just some thoughts to add to the mix :)
So looking forward to the release.
