If they read the hieros that would be perfect, I could learn about them and they wouldn't have to come up and have a conversation. I just don't want them to talk because I want them to be scary bad*ss monsters who are just plain out to get us.

i agree.
And would we even be able to understand it?
After all, its an alien(possibly) we're dealing with. An alien, with alien motives and alien feelings and so on.
ALIENS THINK HUMANS ARE ALIENS

@Biomechanic
The symbols on the sarcophagi and walls are definitely communication, imo, and I like the idea of multidimensional communication, but when it comes to spoken (or unspoken) language, how will they express the symbols - through sounds, sign language or will they write to each other - how do you imagine their spoken communication?

I think it would be frightening as all hell if they did not speak a word. Oh the horror.

Since they're humanoid they could talk, but in my opinion, if they do they'll have to find other ways to concrete the idea that while they are human-like they are NOT human. I'd like them to be as alien as possible, even if they look like us.

Biomechanic.....The heiroglyphs are, I believe, a language...that would follow and the crew would, of course try to understand....it just feels like it would be the most terrifying ride possible if, in spite of they're attempts to understand or comprehend, they're met with total indifferent silence....even as the life with which they make first contact behaves with profound purpose and maliscous intent, they are met with nothingness....no means with which they can come to terms with the reality of their situation...it's like asking a holocaust victim to explain the why of his or her experience....those poor people, in coming face to face with the Nazi mentality of hate, could no more explain what happened to them than an ant could understand us.
That's the kind of horror it would be.
(Please understand about the holocaust reference, I'm not making light of that horrible part of our history and mean no disrespect..it's an illustration. So please...keep the pitchforks hidden away.)

Close Encouters of the Third Kind: Light and Sound.
Contact: Leverage listener's memories.
Sphere: Leverage computer memory and display.
There must be many other original ideas from past science fiction.
But I would like to see use of Cuneiform (proto-writing) from Sumeria - afterall, the Space Jocks created civilisation, right.
Alternatively, I like the notion of conveying semantics and pragmatics by using ideas and symbolism projected into the listener's mind's eye - depicted in front of the them (for cinematic effect).

@Biomechanic, I know, they would be way more advanced in communication than we are. Between themselves, they would have a type of communication like being linked together. For the propose of the movie, I hope they don't say a thing. A cold, blank stair says a lot! Very chilling.
Also, I am having a hell of a time making cense of your message. I am not all that computer savvy, but I believe it is binary code/computer code.
