we'll have to agree to disagree. It's synthetic parts to me, and any perceived emotions are just calculated design. Man cannot create true life from parts made in a factory. I find the notion absurd.
Yes, it is AI. Artificial.

MemberOvomorphApr-07-2012 4:18 PMi agree with Biehn bandit ....an AI is always a fake ...a great success in programming ..but will never be self aware ...he can fool you making you think he's ...but he will never be . Harming an android will be no more evil than harming a toaster ...even if he will scream, cry and say "noooo please nooo" .

AdminPraetorianApr-07-2012 4:19 PM1- Bishop and Call. Love them.
2- Dunno.
3- Dunno.
4- I would say A in the case of a movie android just because it's a given that they are sentient beings/self aware. Androids usually are portrayed as being abused/ensalved by man. Also, I am not a cruel person and I would treat an android kindly basically because that is the way my moral code works.

MemberOvomorphApr-07-2012 4:26 PMHeh, our brains are nothing more than organic processors which operate through electrochemical means. As for self-aware machines, a significant number of very bright people, consider it an inevitablity: http://singinst.org/overview/whatisthesingularity/

MemberOvomorphApr-07-2012 7:46 PM@biehn that is only one type of intelligence design, the mimic-type fake intelligence which basically comes from having a large number of cross referencing databases and only is an illusion (the dictionary states that the weyland droids have this type of intelligence, so Bishop was pretending all along...great)
However there is another theoretical type which is pure intelligence, basically the human brain functions re-created exactly with synthetic parts..are you telling me an identical copy of the human brain would not have awareness? I say it would
I think humans tend to overrate themselves a little bit, like someone else said we are nothing but a biological machine...if you lack the imagination to see that synthetic parts on a small enough and complex enough scale would be indistinguishable from organic life then I feel sorry for you...

MemberOvomorphApr-07-2012 7:54 PM@Frantz again I strongly disagree
self awareness is possible for machines, maybe even a superior class of self awareness than present in humans
i thought this was a sci-fi forum...you need to read more on the subject
4)Of course A...I am a little disgusted by the other responses...To me there is no difference between a synthetic and biological intelligence...a toaster is a primitive machine, this is AI...dont get it twisted
I respect your opinion and made my choice light heatedly, If I were to be serious I suppose a well constructed android deserves respect as much as any living thing.
What could it hurt?, and maybe it might help.

MemberOvomorphApr-08-2012 2:09 AMThe 2 funny mechanics in alien1 were cool. Haha. "..lets talk about our provision.." muhaha...
Well i liked everything that came out with aliens universe, though AVP2 was really bad and i never was able to finish it cause it was to boring and dumb.
AVP1 was not bad at all! Nice conecpt.
But the predator story is much simpler than alien mythology.
Space hunters hunting for men. Thats the whole story.
But was "fresh" and good with Arnold - NO NEED for ANY predator sequel!
Even "PredatorS" was boring and nothing "new".
I think the first 2 Alien movies were both perfect entertainment.
Though Alien shows just a LITTLE (but the spacejokey room was MINDBLOWING...), you find out much more details about this species in Aliens - even the alien queen, which was PERFECTLY designed.
Alien3..well... boring script, boring dialogues... anyway i liked to watch it.
Alien4... well well well... what a dumb story. And these "cool" types were SO boring to me. Biggest idiot and boring was RON PERLMAN.. terrible role. But there were some fine alien scenes in alien4, in the laboratory. Not bad, but not a "highlight".
I love very much PROMETHEUS.... the director.. the cast.. the idea.. the look. But i would also LOVE to see Prometheus2 - with DAVID CRONENBERG as director... or DAVID LYNCH... good if DAVID LYNCH would do a prometheus, this would be HeAVEN... But BEST choice... may be CHRIS CUNNINGHAM... or even with JAMES CAMERON (..show me your weapons. dude! boom boom ...")

MemberOvomorphApr-08-2012 2:12 AMThe singularity is coming. :)
No Ripley, then Newt. They should have never killed Newt. Or, wait... Bishop. But if we are talking only Alien, then I'm taking little Chestburster (such little screen time, but he really makes the most of it). Or maybe Ash, 'cuz I dig the headless body still on task--dedication. Are you sure I can't just pick Ripley?

MemberOvomorphApr-08-2012 11:15 AMthe coming,
The life essence cannot come from synthetic parts, or be imbued into them. You can make all the human to machine parallels you want, but in the end they are just metaphors. Life is life, a machine is a machine, a copy is a copy. Cloning is as close as humans will get to creating true life outside of natural processes. Synthetic life is not indistinguishable from true life once it's known to be synthetic.
And yes, this is a science Fiction forum. Synthetic life is no more real than bio-mechanical aliens.
And why would you feel sorry for me? You're the one with delusions of having a robot mate, or having the stories you read come to life, or whatever your angle is. I'm too busy with real machines and real living beings to start worrying about the civil rights of silicone creations and other such nonsense.

MemberOvomorphApr-08-2012 12:38 PMBiehn, do you understand the meaning of sentience?
That aside, as something to think about, at what point does an augmented human lose their rights as a person?

MemberOvomorphApr-08-2012 1:06 PM1. Any of the prisoners or Hudson/Hicks / Parker.
2. Anybody but Tim Burton!

Nobody in particular
2) Which director would you like to direct a Prometheus 2 ?
Ridley Scott, James Cameron, Andrei Tarkovsky or Stanley Kubric if they were alive.

?
4) an android , a total AI ( not a human clone then , genetic material just used for flesh, muscles ,eyes etc ... ) deserve
a) total respect as a human--> We'll never know if it is truly conscious, in the same way we cannot really know if everyone else beside ourself is not a philosophical zombie.
