We can dissect this film into molecules and argue over the pieces. Let's try something different for a moment. Before you attempt to rationalize what you've seen or think you've seen use your imagination. You were selected to take part in this expedition to a place further than man has ever gone before. You have entrusted your life to the techonology provided by Weyland Corporation as well as your fellow crew members. Each of you was chosen for a specific purpose there. Some of you believe you will find the answers to some of life's most basic questions, Who are we, where did we come from. There will also be the usual assortment of detractors aboard who think the entire voyage will be for nothing. That you will find nothing, or what you find will be dead so long it will be pointless.Regardless, put yourself in that ship, you know who you are, what you believe which camp you would be in. Now we've arrived, My God we're on a planet on the other side of the galaxcy and there are buildings! Some will be ecstatic, others frightened out of their mind. Everything you learned about life being so rare, and our being the sole planet that produced technologically advanced life has just gone POOF. Could you honestly say that you could just strap on your boots screw on that goldfish bowl and march into a temple of alien construction that probably predates the appearance of man on Earth. Really? All the rules, morality, and norms that we expect because we are bipeds with similar traits might not apply to these beings. Speaking from my perspective my skin would be damp, freezing, I'd be absolutely ready to turn around and go HOME at the first indication of trouble. The first sign that something isn't quite right. Let them send in a whole ship full of David's. Cowardace has nothing to do with it, all people have a self preservation mechanism that kicks in and tells you that you are WAY in over your head, the adrenaline surges, pupils dialate, muscle fibers contract, digeston shuts down. circulation increases. That's the kind of scare you are going to get from this film because Ridley knows how to get inside that part of you that atrophies in our safe, brightly lit, organized lives.

You could also say that as human beings, we're compelled to do things that make us afraid to see if we survive. We fulfill the need to search and discover things. Think of members of an ancient tribe, leaving the valley to go over the hills nobody has gone beyond before. Maybe some of those people don't come back. But it's through that searching that humankind has moved forward, whether in literal, physical discovery, or that of a scientific, philosophical, or moral nature. I think the mission in Prometheus could go forward so long as the crew, whether collectively or individually, is composed of people whose fear of failure/death/the unknown is outweighed by their desire for discovery. These are the new tribesmen, climbing out of the valley to peer at what's on the other side.

I would probably be wondering if I get paid for all the time that I have been in that Cryo Chamber also when I return. Now that is a check! lol

A man who does not feel fear in situations where he should is not a clever man. Fear is a defense mechanism that's your body telling you "Dude we are in over our heads, get the fuck out of here now!". If you aren't even feeling that fear then you're either stupid or like this woman. True bravery is in overcoming the fear and using it to say "I know I'm in over my head, so STFU while I get myself out of here!" (I don't mean that in a personal attack or anything, just commenting on what I think when you say you don't feel fear)

No it's not bad or good Cypher, don't let people project their weaknesses on to you. It just is. Only you can judge whether it's been detrimental in your life at any time. There are no situations where a man "should" feel fear, it depends on the individual.

Sorry I don't believe anyone is totally fearless. But unless the fearlessness is for a good cause it's just foolishness. You may not fear anything but are you willing to give up your life or something you covet for someone else? I think Shaw is trying to convince Vickers of that in the trailer. That kind of situation separates the men from the boys.

@Cypher - So you could take a butchers knife and chop your own hand off right? If you dont have any fear, you should be able to do that. If a known serial killer had you strapped to a chair and was holding a screwdriver in front of your eye, you wouldnt be scared? I dont believe you. But if you TRULY have no fear then thats VERY bad indeed. (Sorry for the graphic examples btw) I've thought about chopping my hand off to be honest. Had the cleaver and everything. Wasn't scared to do it. But then I realized I kinda needed the hand and suicide wasn't the way to deal with my problems. I've been mugged by a guy with a gun, when he held it up to my face I simply raised an eyebrow, like I said earlier, another time with a knife, both times I should have been shitting myself but instead I managed to disarm and incapacitate both of them. I've seen some messed up shit in my life. I don't know why, I mean I used to get scared as a kid, then as I got older I simply shed that fear. Makes you useless in bad situations I think. So I'm kinda glad I don't know it anymore. I don't go out of my way to get into bad situations, but I know that if/when I do, I'll be able to deal with it. I was bullied quite a lot as a kid, so I've known fear. I just don't let it rule me anymore.

What would scare me more than anything else is knowing that WY already did send out an expedition of Davids--that didn't come back.

Sending in a ship full of synthetics? That is just an amazing idea. There would probably be humans, but they would be on the ship waiting in orbit and monitoring the synthetics' progress. Safe and sound and sipping hot chocolate while the androids did the dangerous work. That's what people would actually do in reality. That's what NASA does. That just makes a lot more sense than putting your fragile humans in danger for no good reason whatsoever. Of course that would make for a much less interesting story. "Looks like the droids are getting ripped apart by a bunch of pissed off blue guys." "OK, we got it all on tape. Let's nuke the dropsite and go home."
