or is the 3D just to add depth? becuase I can't stand sitting in the theater and getting things thrown at me from the screen every minute...
If thats the case then I will see the movie in 2D but at my local theater you can only see the film in 3D so I want to know beforehand...

I read every actor in the movie was given a paddle ball and from time to time was suppossed to paddle at the camera to give the audience the 3D feel.

it's Scott, do not worry. I have a feeling it will be used much more as a means to ''pull'' you into the scene as opposed to silly gimmicks like stuff poking out of the screen or flying over your head etc.

Seriously, it's likely gonna be more subtle and will enhance scenes. Imagine what it will be like in the Starmap room.

LOL Cinefan,
I am looking forward to watching it in 3D IMAX, I saw AVATAR in 3D IMAX. I really liked it but I have to say that about the first 15-20 minutes of the movie I thought I was going to be sick. I thought to myself 'oh man I am not going to be able to watch this movie' I dont suffer from motion sickness or seasickness. I think I wanted to really notice the 3D and that in the beginning of the film I was trying to hard? and making myself ill. I took a deep breath relaxed and didnt try to force it, then everything fell into place in my brain I guess and I totally enjoyed it.
I have never had that reaction before to 3D or motion.

I suffer from motion sickness so I tend to not go to 3D movies, but I will take the chance on prometheus I think but I would really go crazy if that would ruin my experience of the movie...
But i really have no choice because in my local theater the movie only shows in 3D so what would you advise me?

its being filmed in 3D the same way as avatar, so will probably suck you in, and i actually love that kind of 3D! its still just a gimmick to me, but depending on the environment, like avatar or tron, it makes a really cool experience, not sure how it will translate to the dark look and feel of alien though......

In general terms, I am a little against 3d film making.
Of course, we see in 3d in real life. But the translation of it, movie-wise, is not natural. At least not yet. They implement various technologies to actually fool the brain and the way it perceives things around it.
They are doing a good job though. But I believe that as long as we are going to need glasses to see the movie, then we are not there yet.
For example, if someone waves a blade or a needle, right before your eyes, the natural feeling is that you are not going to able to spot the blade or needle, due to that your natural eyes have trouble adjusting to a rapidly moving thing very close to them. Your eyes simply blur and defocus the thing.
So, real life is more actually like you see in 2D and not in 3D...I believe that up to now, cinema has only managed to find a new expressive means-3d as they mean it that is.
We have a long way until we feel the movie like we do with our natural eyes. But perhaps someone goes to the movies to see something simply different than meets the eye. And from this point of view, this is wow!
3D comes with some standard issues, like invaderzim42 spotted like the dark-light thing..Good 3D requires good lighting, and aliens love the shadows...Another one, is for the director to pick the best spot to focus his 3D camera, according to the 3D filming technology he implements.....But if he does this right...and I believe sir Ridley must certainly know what he is doing, ....just picture that:
The camera is searching through a dark place, nothing becomes apparently visible for some time, and then suddenly we start making out, the 3D shape of a xeno head, reflecting the minimum light of the scene, starts moving towards us and moving in an unpredictable way....add the sound effects and the music...and there you have it ...magic.
So Logan3, take the chance if there is no other way to do it. If something goes wrong, you will be able to enjoy it again in Blue Ray...like I did with Tron...and I liked it much more...another last thing...I didn't really felt the 3D in Avatar nor in Tron after a few minutes...maybe it was never there?Because if it were subtle, it was really really subtle...:)

I've seen the preview in 3D and the colors, depth and clearness was the best I've ever seen. I think this will be one of the most artistic 3D movies of it's time. Remember Alien?

3D is just another special effect. If it's done well (which I have yet to see) it should enhance the story, but if done poorly you wind up with the distracting and sickening "comin at ya!" bullshit.
