The head is a totem!

OK I'm not straying of the whole idea of bio-engineering here but I find the idea of the Alien being bio-engineered a little dissapointing! I don't think we are going to see the 'xeno' in Prometheus, at which I am completely fine with, but I personally don't like the assumptions that a lot of folk have, that it was simply a piece of bio-engineering that went wrong (or right according to your perspective) To the point! I came across this interesting site about totems, http://www.ehow.co.uk/about_5426316_totem-poles.html It quotes: "Crest totem poles usually serve as beacons for family ancestry. Certain clans or tribes harness unique emblems for their family. These tend to be carved into their particular totem poles, detailing history, strengths, or other significant events. The symbols on the totems tend to be a variety of native animals". Every King has his reign, and then he dies.... Its inevitable! The huge Head in my opinion is a totem and if I'm not mistaken in the trailer there is a mural directly behind the head of which resembles the original xeno! If these engineers have in fact terraformed our Earth and left behind "an invitation" then certain traces of their culture would lay within ours. For instance the Native American culture of old had a huge respect for all living things especially the wild animals that preyed the land? ie. The Wolf! So could the original Alien just in fact be a form of animal that they truely repected and admired "for its purity"? and hence a long dead king would perhaps have a mural in his tomb of said 'animal'? SO WHAT MUST A NINE FOOT TALL ENGINEER BE LIKE????!!!!???? The Kane scene in 'Alien' with the eggs could simply just have been ONE variation in a THOUSAND of different species of creature that could caused mayhem!!! Of course this is just theory! Good people of this fantastic site... Sir Ridley is back! and I'm sure He'll take an inanimate story and bring it back to life! That means a lot of the canon will be defunct after this movie, and as I and a lot of you know nothing of what Prometheus has in store for us, I am certain of one thing! We will be wrong! SOO WRONG!!

And here is the killer! Mortuary Totem Poles: "These totem poles were made to bring honor to those who had recently died. The ashes of the recently deceased were usually held in a small compartment in the back of the totem pole. These poles served a similar purpose as modern day urns. It was common for the totem poles to have one single representation of the deceased. They ranged in size from hand-held to multiple stories tall".

One crazy theory is that the giant head is statue/idol of the SJ’s creator/God. In turn, the SJ’s have been trying to re-create a perfect life form in the image of their God (such as humans on earth, Blue Guys, and humanoids elsewhere).

Yes I know this but I've been thinking like mad all day! It can't be as simple as that! It's crazy how much I've been thinking about this one scene where it clearly shows a mural of the the xeno! There has to be something behind that because it has been stated, as we all know that the xeno isn't in this movie! Ridders has an unreal way of mindf**king, He and his marketing team should get awards for this alone!

The totem pole makes perfect sense. Also, notice how their are dead bodies in there, similar to the Egyptian pyramids where the workers/slaves were sealed in.

I'm sorry to be a party-pooper on this one. I think it's more like an Olmec+Moai mashup on steroids. It looks like us for the shock value. I'm afraid that's the end of the story. :•(

@mlb127 There is definately something pre modern civilisation going on, like you say ancient Egyptian. That adds to the point that I'm trying to make about remnants of their culture within ours. Difference being that they of course are more advanced and that their homeworld could contain the original xenomorph as just another 'animal' (or bio-product) within a vast amount of other yet to be seen creatures! Personally I want a psychological impact from this movie! I want to come out of the theatre deep in thought!

I think one of the first images released tells us some important info. We see a dead body, decapitated head with 2 people wondering what happened, and then David who has already figured out that the big head was responsible for killing the Jockey. As a student of Animation and visual development I've learned that you may may only have one second, or one frame to tell your story. Judging by the way this shot is composed I think they are giving us a huge clue that the Jockey who the crew expected to encounter has been killed of by the blue guy that the head represents, possibly there own creation.

I really dislike the idea of SJ's having a primitive tribal culture, it reminds me too much of the Predator culture from the AvP series. I also hate the idea of an interstellar race inheriting their ancient ancestor's beliefs and morals.

Well, the Sjs do appear to favor monolithic art and architecture.......but that aesthetic also embodies what we almost instinctively recognize, as timeless and permanent. ( and BTW, Scott has already made it quite clear, that the SJ ship is both ) Perhaps the head is also symbolic of their arrogance.....a monument to themselves. Why not? We've done the same thing, countless times.

what about the hieroglyphs, on earth and in the sj ship...how do you marry the primitive with the advanced? is there more than one race or species represented? it looks as though the lower species enshrines the sj ship as it sits dormant...and maybe with some warnings for future visitors(like the skull at the top of the temple)....just wondering if the pile of remains belongs to the lower race, or if the sj's are expendable like worker bees, maybe they work for/against an even higher race (maybe thats their saucer shaped ship floating over the waterfall in the trailer)....who knows....I bet Sir Ridley does, oh the waiting and speculating

Reffugee what are you on?

"also you see a decapitated head." this is a body without a head. A head is a head from a decapitated body. You cannot decapitate a head. OCD in full flow....lol.

Lots of speculation here. It's obvious that a race from Zeta Reticuli did, AT SOME POINT, visit our planet and intervene in the evolution of mankind. The question is, is that who the crew of Prometheus meets when they arrive on LV-426? Perhaps the "punishment" for the race of engineers who intervened on Earth is the fact that a hyper-evolved race of beings will, ultimately, show up on THEIR home planet, wishing to challenge them. Wishing to take their place as creator. This happens to the engineers over and over, done to them over time by every civilization they started, and Earth is just the latest "bird" to show up and peck the life out of what's left of their home world. Hence their sour disposition when The Prometheus arrives. In the prime of their civilization, the engineers wheeled around space, terraforming and seeding planets at will, sowing the seeds of life AND REAPING, when necessary with creations like the xeno. All of this is no doubt technology that they, themselves stole at some point from their own creator. And on and on it goes, backward and forward in time.

Cylon_Xeno, Thanx for starting this thread. The stuff at about totems is rather interesting. But in regards to the head, remember that it (yes "IT") is supposed to pilot a space ship!! See this link... http://movies.sky.com/prometheus-latest-space-jockey-and-giant-head-pilot-confirmed Of course all this info only deepens the mystery. I

there is no "body" in that image as far as we can be sure, there is a suit. It could be empty, and imagine it is, wouldnt be much of a shock to anyone if they see a dead engineer in the first act of the movie, i imagine that reveal will come in the second act. What if the head is a warning, a punishment, that you lose your head if you anger the god?
