What?! Please explain

I ask this for two main reasons:
First, it appears that David is inside the Ship goofing around, while everybody else is sleeping.
Secondly, if it is a scientific crew, why telling them the purpose of such an endeavor only after being well on their way?
My personal beliefe [if the above proves to be right] is that this is somehow an important part of the Plot itself.
My second beliefe is that this is probably a nod to 2001 hybernating crew.
Your thoughts...?

Well, as I stated previously I'm not english.

As I said I think the first job is to oversee David that everything works in perfect condition for the trip. In my opinion as a kind of risk prevencioniste

By the way the hobby of David with the basketball reminds me of Ripley in Alien Resurrecion LOL

Shambhala:
There seems to be a lot of nods to other Alien movies in Prometheus. Tiny but interesting things as you so kindly shown. The basketball part seems to be one of them.

@David 1
The TED talk was non-specific in relation to Prometheus?
This Mission and the specifics of the Mission, were not disclosed.
Prometheus, as a, "Project", is mentioned in the Timeline - but, again, it's non-specific...

hi patch:
No doubt about it, but my focus is in the reason why the scientific group is only debriefed after they aproach the planet. Not as much as to why David is awake.

I haven't seen Alien in a number of years, but, Ash was indeed in the hypersleep pod and my assumption of this is that if you remember...the crew of the Nostromo, -least the ones who are left at the point when Ash gets his head smashed off, never knew that there was an android onboard. So Ash has to "sleep" to give the projection that he is human. (possibly because in the future [alien timeline] synthetics are not to be trusted, so the company has to hide the fact that they have one onboard?)

And Yes, certainly the character of David is like Frank Poole, 2001: A Space Odysey

hi,TKfanboy421:
my thougts exactly, friend.
It was/is logical to send a hidden-in-plain-sight sinthetic in the Alien time-line since "The Company" was a somewhat secretive Omnipresent Boss.
Who better to trust a secret mission than to a "Goddam robot"? [even better if that robot belongs to that same company]

Dear Xenotron and Blender..excuse me ''Bender''.....could you please both of you correct my spelling mistakes in case they occure in the future?you see greek is such a difficult and deep language with a vast vocabulary...its so hard to learn a second or third language like your native one....
p.s try to use a hangerchif instead of the seat cover of your local theater...

I agree with all of the above, love you lot alot, but not too much. For my dollars/pounds worth, David, Vickers room, She knows there are a lot of them nextdoor to her, maybe? Weylan, Davids eyes n' ears? and then, eating jelly babies, I know they are food, but they think they are on a special mission of their own? Do I tell them that they are being eaten? Don't think so, lol

Ah.....but Ash was sent to pose as a human. Dont you think it would be odd that he didnt need hypersleep. Remember they didnt find he was an android until half way through the movie.
