Blade Runner

I just want advice on how my little brain deals with this... Blade Runner is set in 2019, its 2012. So when the time comes will it be the images of an alternative world and future, a fantasy, a dark fairy tale (I like that) or other? Opinions please...

I feel that if that kind of world is ever destined to be 'our' future here upon Earth, with those levels of technology that are discussed and pondered than we should really be thinking in terms of 2319 or something like that. I feel the date that is used in someways 'Dates' the film, forces it down a road which takes away some of the potential future-magic or horror that could await us and our destiny on Earth. By giving it a wider future-date it sets it apart from us as a potential 'Near-Future' experience without us looking at it and going: "well they haven't invented that yet, and they were wrong about that and they said this was going to happen in 2019 and it hasnt happend yet" and so on. Just like 2001: A Space Odyssey, many things suggested have not come to pass yet. Don't get me wrong, love 2001: A Space Odyssey, love Blade Runner, just be a bit more say 'fancy-free' with the dates so it doesn't pingeon-hole the franchise too much. Star wars is an example. We all know it was made in the seventies but bar some of the hair cuts it doesn't have anything that really dates it and sets it definely into the time that it was created.

I 2nd @David 1, I don't want any more Blade Runner films, beauty is often that because of that first glimpse... not knowing why you took that glimpse, or the ins and outs of that look. To dissect (or add more to) a thing may well change it, I don't want it changed anymore... it's a close to perfection as I've seen! And @I'd rather be eating something else I feel its the sideburns that date Star wars! :)

Well a lot of people felt that Prometheus being an 'Alien0like' prequel shouldn't have been made... yet here it is! As long as the universe is expanded upon and other subject wether related or indirectly related to Blade Runner then that is fine. I would like to see the exteroir of the exterior of Blade Runner. If Ridley Scott took Hampton Fanchers 'internalized script' and opened it out to the 'wide blue yonder' and what takes place outside the buldings and all the rest of it then what about a story that is expanded beyond that. Space exploration that comes back to Earth and potentially 'ends' where Blade Runner begins. A sequel that has no direct bearing to continue on with the established characters form Blade Runner exceptsave for that of the city-scape itself: Hades/San-Angeles. Or parallel story/stories where by a sitiuation is happening silmoltaneously while the events of Blade Runner are being played out elswhere (off-screen). We don't see it but we know with enough cues and hints that it is going on its simply implied whether directly or indirectly.

hi punx: I have to be honest. I don't like the idea of sequels [of any kind]. Nor do I like the idea of prequels. For a movie to be perfect, the story must be told once and only once. Aesthetics considered and done. Let the big questions remain unanswered. On the other hand, there are those [Sir Ridley as it seems] that are willing to take another glimpse at a potential story-line diferent from his own original [i.e. the SJs]. I'm ok with that and I even encourage it. But telling THAT side story is one thing [to be done once and ONLY once]; to re-do the hole story is another [and I consider it as a terrible lack of imagination]. That said, I couldn't boooo the Idea of a new Blade Runner movie enough. What follows? Gladiator 2: Rise of the Zombie Maximus?

I'm not saying change Blade Runner yet again just that the date: 2019, to me, knowing what we know that the majority of what Blade Runner suggests has not happened yet except for a few things takes some of the Near-Future myth away for the level of radical technology upon show, thats all. I do not want to a scene altered through the final cut of Blade Runner either!!! No way!! It's just the date thing that I have not so much an issue with as more an intellectual inaceptance to buy that: "Los Angeles 2019"

I dont want Blade Runner remade either, but I do feel that their is a wide scope of mythology to explore still (in this context by mythology I mean the universe and themes that Blade Runner has already set up and addressed). Yes, I do like the idea of living with the mystery too and am all for that also, but if a film directly or indirectly connected to Blade Runner was to come out I as well as you would be a sucker for wanting to see what tyey were going to show... The Mutiny aboard the ship which then forced Roy and the others to come to Earth in the first place? Or during the last moments of the end of Blade Runner where Roy is giving his "Tears in Rain" lament, there is a sort of pull back to reveal the mammoth size of the future-city they are in and a focus in upon anothe 'section' or 'borough', 'suburb' of the city and another 'human drama' is thus in the throes of playng itself out as Blade Runner once was...

@I'd rather be eatin something else... That cityscape/Hades/San-angeles was termed as The Sprawl in the Will Gibson books, I feel that he is a master of cyber-punk writing and since I read Neuromancer it has remained (by me) being called that, do you know that Will Gibson said his influences were amphetamine, The Ramones and Blade Runner (all sounds like my life lol).

yeah I know. But that is just P. K. Dick's futurology mistake. There are a lot of books and movies that have their Dates to near present time.

Same here. No reboots please. Either create prequel or go ahead of the subject and tackly original storyline in different way like Alien resurrection.

to name a few movies/books with futurologic date "mistakes" 2001 1984 [though the date is pretty much irrelevant to the intention of the story] Blade Runners "2019" Total Recall and I'm not even considering those sci-fi prior to the 70's

I thought there could be some scope for exploring Maximus' life as a younger man and a soldier in the Roman Army. I'm all for expansionist-ideals and theorums of plot/story lines provided it is done with intellegence, vision and a desire to preserve and compliment the already 'existing' universe.

No Sky, your getting me wrong. I do not want any reboot or suggestion of a reboot for Blade Runner... Why would I ?! Its near-enough perfect! I just want the mythology BEHIND the mythology perhaps investigated this time you know. Or an 'Empire Strikes Back' size and scale type of continuation upon the themes previously raised yet expanded upon or failing that blasted WIDE OPEN!!! :-)

IrishAndoid1 we are talking about a continuation upon related themes as is the case for Prometheus not a remake. I must have said three times already! Dont you read the intent and tone of the overall thread??? We're just talking about the franchise, its themes and the wider universe it opens up to thats all

I am already shivering at the idea of what might happen to Robocop, let alone a reboot of Blade Runner... Fast CGI action, a very polished urban landscape, a super strong and almost invincible Roy Batty for an epic final fight with Deckard and his mighty weapons. And teen romance. Ewwww
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born. Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.
